The Assist

Dueling Couches is not known for it's reading of books (or even proof reading our posts), but I have to say that I really enjoyed the book "The Assist". If you are from Boston, like basketball, or enjoy history, you'll love this book. Ccook gave me a copy a couple months back, and I finally got around to reading it. The story centers around a coach from Charlestown named Jack O'Brien. He is a real tough coach, but the story (which is true) goes on to show us the devotion O'Brien had for these young city kids. Knowing how hard it is to escape from city life, O'Brien revolves his entire life to push these kids to be the best on and off the court. The book also goes into the desegregation of Boston schools, and the positive and negatives changes it brought to Charlestown. The story continues to show us that sometimes sports can bring about change in a community, and shine hope where hope seems to be out out of these kids reach. Honestly, it's a great book, and if you liked "Hoop Dreams", this blows it out of the water.
