Boston Desperate For A Shortstop?

"The Red Sox "have left no stone unturned" in looking at or discussing deals for shortstops and have built a long list of candidates, the Boston Globe reported. Whether they actually pull the trigger on something is up for debate internally as the team patiently awaits the return of Jed Lowrie, who has not played since April due to a wrist injury. Among those on the list: Omar Vizquel, Jack Wilson, J.J. Hardy, Orlando Cabrera, Bobby Crosby, Jason Donald, Miguel Tejada. The Sox have also discussed a shortstop with the Atlanta Braves (ESPN)."

We reported yesterday that the Sox had made calls inquiring about availability of SS Orlando Cabrera. From the reports I have read the Sox were not happy with the price tag the A's had put on him, in terms of contract and prospects to reacquire him. It seems like the Sox have made calls to every team, but haven't found anything they are happy with. Boston is going to be forced into a tough decision as Lowrie gets closer to returning, because if he is fine and can hold down the SS job then Lugo becomes completely useless, and the Sox would have to decide if they are going to buy out his contract. That would be the 2nd time they have had to eat a SS contract in the past couple of years (Renteria).

To be honest I am not really freaking out about a SS. Sure it would be nice, but I would be much more focused on bringing in someone to replace Ortiz. I think the Sox need to go out and find their "slugger" of the future. Way back we brought in Manny, and I would like to see the Sox make a splash like that if their offense struggles, and/or Ortiz continues to be an automatic out.
