Jason Bay is to show signs that he is going to break out of this slump. Josh Beckett has been out of his slump for a while now, and last night he has a very solid outing going 6 2/3 innings letting up 2 runs on 6 hits with 4 Ks. Beckett improved to 8-1 since May 1, and truly looks like the ace of this staff.
Boston got its offense going in the 2nd innings when Jason Bay hit his first HR in a long time. He now has 20 on the year, and he looked to be swing the bat a lot better as he went 2-3 on the night. Boston put the game away when Varitek (who has been very clutch this season) knocked in 2 runs on a single up the middle. At that point the Sox were up 4-1 and that is all they would need as Beckett and the Sox bullpen did a good job keeping the A's off the scoreboard. Papelbon came in for the 9th and collected his 21st save of the season.
The Yankees also won last night, so Boston is still only 1 game up in the race for the AL East.
