"With the acquisition of Chris Baker and Alex Smith by the New England Patriots, there isn't much of a cushion for incumbent starting tight end Benjamin Watson, and according to the Boston Herald, his absence due to injury isn't helping his cause.
The Herald's Karen Guregian calls tight end "one of the most heated" amongst the position battles in Pats camp, and head coach Bill Belichick does not give any indication that Watson's prior efforts for the team guarantee his continued employment (ESPN)."
Watson is a great talent, but he just can't stay on the field. With all the injury problems he has had, and the number of TEs in camp I actually do believe this story. Watson and Maroney have had very similar careers with the Patriots. Both have the talent, but both seem to have trouble staying healthy and on the field. Needless to say these "exhibition" games will be very important for Watson.
