The big story from the weekend was, of course, the LA Lakers winning their 15th NBA title, Phil Jackson winning his 10th, and Kobe Bryant winning his 1st without Shaq. But let's not go nuts over Jackson and Kobe just yet.
How badly did the Magic choke? One layup in Game 2, and one free throw in Game 4, and it's a 3-1 series going into Game 5. The Lakers won in 5, and the last game was a blowout, but they barely got there, and very nearly didn't.
Some are comparing Kobe to Michael Jordan. Preposterous. When Jordan was playing, there was NO debate as to who the best player in the league was. These days, there's certainly debate about Kobe's status amongst his peers.
Red Auerbach "only" had 9 rings as a coach, but he played a part in 16 Celtics' titles. So Jackson has 6 more to win just to tie Red.
Red also assembled his own teams. Jackson's stumbled on talent. Between them, they've both coached some of the best players ever (Jordan, Russel, Kobe, Bird, Shaq, Cousy, and so on). But Red went out and GOT those top flight players. Jackson inherited them.
So to summarize, Red is better than Jackson and always will be until Phil assembles his own championship team.
Michael Jordan is the best ever, and Kobe still isn't close.
The Magic handed this series to the Lakers cheaper than a 300 pound Vietnamese whore gives handjobs.
