Why Not?

Why not hear what Marcellus Wiley has to say about Ryan Leaf and guns?

I was listening to The Doug Gottlieb Show on my way home from work yesterday, and Marcellus Wiley was on to discuss a number of topics, ranging from Mark Ingram to Matt Leinart and even a little Dancing With the Stars. Marcellus, always well-spoken as any Ivy League alumnus would be, also offered up some tales about Ryan Leaf and a great little tidbit about his interactions with guns as an NFL player.

I've searched all over for the audio for this, but ESPN surprisingly chose not to include this in their snipets of the day's show, and no one else seems to have it either. But in case you missed it, I'll paraphrase because they're too good not to share. First, the Ryan Leaf story.

We all know the well documented struggles of the QB bust out of Wazzu. Upon getting to the Chargers though, Marcellus learned that the legend of Ryan Leaf has more to it. Apparently, at one point during a poor stretch of his rookie season, Leaf didn't seem to concerned with the poor play and would often be seen laughing and yucking it up after bad losses. This behavior continued upon landing in the team charter where three limos ready to party were awaiting Leaf and whoever wanted to head out. Keep in mind this is the plane that also has the owner, GM, team president and the like aboard. Smartly, everyone else on the plane passes not wanting to make a bad impression. Leaf continues this smug and nonchalant attitude for a number of games in which the team lost. Apparently, according to Wiley, the team got so fed up with it they decided to teach him a little lesson. Wiley said on the show yesterday that linemen on the team were basically telling the opposing D line, "Hey you want a shot at this guy? Come over here. Go through me, this is the best place to get it." And he was repeatedly sacked very hard with the help of his offensive linemen!

Hahahaha Good for them. I've seen shit like that in movies, but never really thought it happened in the NFL.

Now for the guns story. This one is even better.

News broke yesterday afternoon that Plaxico Burress will likely be serving out his full sentence in prison, as he was denied a 2nd work release. (This is stupid, but I'll save this argument for another day.) So the conversation moved to guns and NFL players and Wiley was asked if he was ever in a situation in which guns were involved as an NFL player. Wiley, who is not a proponent of players having guns, surprisingly said, "Oh yea. I almost got killed." My ears perked up. He went on to tell a story about how he was leaving a night club in LA in his brand new ride with some of his boys. Traffic around the club was at a standstill and some of his boys had hopped out and were milling around and hollerin' at some hoes and such. Well things got ugly quick when one of his boys apparently talked to the wrong girl and set some dude off. The guy says, "OK..hold up. And he goes back to his car, and he grabs something and starts coming back toward us," Wiley said. There was nowhere for him to run, nowhere to move his car and this dude is marching over to his whip totin' a pistol and ready to pop one in Wiley's ass. He was apparently only about 20 yards away from the car when out of nowhere some guy comes flying and shoves the dude in the chest, saying, "Yo leave him alone, man. He's with me. He plays ball. He's cool." This person who saved the day? None other than Willie McGinest!

Unbelievable. Apparently, Willie somewhat knew the guy so he was able to squash the beef or whatever the kids are sayin' these days. Marcellus says that he has "Willie to thank for his life."

WOW! This was some good radio. I hope that I can find the link for you. Kinda made me like Wiley a little bit more for sharing these stories. I know a lot of athletes have stories like this but they're reluctant to share with the public. Anyway, just thought it was interesting. Willie! I'll be damned.

AFC East Preview

2008 Records:

Miami - 11-5
New England - 11-5
NY Jets - 9-7
Buffalo - 7-9

Miami

The Dolphins were the leagues breakout team last year, but I don't seem them keeping it up. Pennington showed his true colors in the playoffs, and even though I like their running game I don't think they are going to be able to consistently put up points. The defense is solid, and Taylor could be a nice addition, but once again I don't see it as anything special. They are going in the right direction, but I think they take a step back this year.

Prediction - 7-9

New England

Patriots had their heart broken last year when they had 11 wins and somehow didn't make the playoffs. They get Brady back, and if he can stay on the field the offense looks unstoppable. The running game should be improved with Taylor in the mix, and Galloway should help spread the field for Moss and Welker. The defense is suspect after trading away Seymour, but if they stick with a 4-3 like they did for much of the preseason I think they will be good enough when combined with this offense to win game. The key to the season is health...

Predictions - 12-4

NY Jets

They have a good young QB in Sanchez, and a solid defense, so they should be a good team for a long time. Still, they are starting a rookie QB and he is going to have to go through his growing pains, and that will affect their record. I really lke what the Jets did in the offseason, and I really do think a lot of Sanchez. He could have a "Matt Ryan" type of year, but I just don't see them going too far with the Patriots in the same division.

Predictions - 9-7

Buffalo

The Bills in short are a mess. Their offensive line is in shambles, TO is already yelling at the coaches, they fired their offensive coordinator, and Trent Edwards looks like shit. Their defense is OK, but this is going to be a real long year for this team. My prediction is TO goes down for the season by week 6, Edwards is going to have his job in question, and they don't win more then 5 games.

Prediction - 5-11

2009 Standing:

New England - 12-4
NY Jets - 9-7
Miami - 7-9
Buffalo - 5-11

NFL Previews: NFC South

2008 Standings:
Carolina 12-4
Atlanta 11-5
Tampa Bay 9-7
New Orleans 8-8

New Orleans Saints

Mark my words. The New Orleans Saints will be representing the NFC in the Superbowl. Everyone knows the Saints have a video game offense, however, their defense led by new defensive coordinator Greg Williams will be top ten. They re-signed Jonathen Vilma, an they signed veteran safety Darren Sharper along with some other pieces that will bring the Saints out of Mediocrity. Plus they have my friend Devery Henderson on the team and he is due for a 1300 yard season.

Prediction: 12-4 (representing NFC in Superbowl according to DP)

Atlanta Falcons

matt ryan took the league by storm last year, and he will only get better this year. He has already far surpassed my expectations I had for him last year. And him teamed up with Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez and Michael Turner the offense will be absolutely fine. I expect Atlanta to be a NFC wild card team.

Prediction: 10-6 (DP's wildcard pick)

Carolina Panthers

I hate the Panthers, I really do. I hate Jake Delhomme and I hate DeAngelo Williams. DeAngelo Williams was a fluke and defenses will be able to stop him easily, so what does that leave? Jake Delhomme passing to Steve Smith. That will be the only offense they have and their defense is deteriorating. Julius Peppers will only play for stats and could care less about the Panthers. They are going to drop off.

Prediction: 7-9

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I hate this team even more than the Panthers. Tampa Bay is going to have a really long season. Their QB situation is a mess, their runningback situation is confusing, they only have Antonio Bryant as their only WR. their aging defense is going to get burnt. This will be the definition of a rebuilding year in Tampa.

Prediction: 3-13

NFC North Preview

2008 records:

Minnesota - 10-6
Chicago - 9-7
Green Bay - 6-10
Detroit - 0-16

2009 Predictions:

Minnesota Vikings

Well I think we can all agree we are already sick of this team. Favre is a douchebag, and every week is just another distraction. This will come back in haunt the Vikings. They have an easy schedule to start with, and their running backs are unreal, but Favre will wear down, much like he did last season and the Vikings will crumble. The Vikings defense is solid though I sill have some questions about their pass defense. It is really too bad that this team signed Favre, because other then him they have one of the better teams in the NFL.

Prediction: 9-7

Chicago Bears

Here is another team that has got a shit load of media coverage, but once again I think this is a overhyped team. Forte is very solid, and Cutler is going to be very good, but he really doesn't have anyone to throw to. I like Hester, but he is not a #1 WR. The big problem with this team with be their defense. I just don't think it is what it once was, and this offense is still going to stall until they gt some WRs to help Orton.

Prediction: 8-8

Green Bay Packers

The Packers defense was so bad last year that no matter what the offense did it wasn't enough. This year will be different after picking B.J. Raji in the offseason. The big difference will be that they are actually healthy. When they have all their players on the field they have a great pass defense, and not with Raji in the middle they should be able to control the run. On offense this team is stacked. Rodgers proved he was the real deal last year, and he has all his weapons back this year. If Ryan Grant can stay healthy this could be one of the most dangerous offenses in the league.

Prediction: 11-5

Detroit Lions

The Lions are once again rebuilding. Stafford is the starting QB, but to be honest I think he sucks. Their defense is sub par, and the only thing this team has going for them is Calvin Johnson. They will win a couple games this year, but this is still the worst team in the NFL, and will inflate everyone record in this division by 2 games.

Prediction: 2-14

Final Standings:

Green Bay - 11-5
Minnesota - 9-7
Chicago - 8-8
Lions - 2-14

NFL Previews: AFC North

2008 Standings
Pittsburgh 12-4
Baltimore 11-5
Cincinnati 4-11-1
Cleveland 4-12

2009 Predictions
Cleveland Browns

It doesn't matter if Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson is at the helm, the Browns are going to flat out suck this year. I have a feeling that even though Quinn won the starting job, he is a couple of mistakes away from being benched. And what sucks even more for Quinn is that he really has no one to throw too. Kellen Winslow is gone, Donte Stallworth suspended for killing someone and Braylon Edwards has forgotten how to catch. Also, Jamal Lewis has been more than productive than I ever thought he would be, but I feel like the mileage is finally going to bite him and he will be hurt for a majority of the year.

Prediction: 3-13

Cincinnati Bengals

I like the Bengals this year. I really do. But they are a big what if team. If Carson Palmer can stay healthy, Ochocinco can go back to form he was 2 years ago, if Chris Henry really has a coming out party their offense will be all set. However, football includes two sides of the ball and even with additions of rookie Rey Maualuga and veteran Roy Williams their defense is laughable. And in this division where the top two teams are defense driven the Bengals are in line for another disappointing season.

Prediction 7-9

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens had a break out season last year led by rookie Joe Flacco and that unbelievable defense. And Nothing wil change this year. The only problems I foresee is the Ravens offense. They Have Willis McGahee, Ray Rice and recently unretired Derrick Mason, and that is about it. The Ravens defense will be great and angry as always but they will take a step back from last year.

Prediction: 10-6 Wild Card

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Champs will return to the field with relatively the same roster. The only person that Pittsburgh lost was Larry Foote and they are replacing him with more than ready Lawrence Timmons. The Steelers also will have Rashard Mendenhall and Limas Sweed one year older, and that will only help them. Their Defense will be great, their offense will be great, and no one can think differently.

Prediction: 13- 3
(DP's prediction to represent the AFC in the superbowl)
