Patriots Cut Ty Warren (UPDATED)

"The Patriots made a series of moves Friday afternoon, including officially signing wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, as well as the release of linebacker Tully Banta-Cain, cornerback Tony Carter, tight end Alge Crumpler, tackle Nick Kaczur, defensive lineman Marcus Stroud, defensive lineman Ty Warren and rookie free agent Ryan Coulson. In addition, the officially announced the signings of third-round pick Ryan Mallett and fifth-round pick Marcus Cannon (WEEI)."

Really surprised that they cut Warren. I guess that he is washed up, or at the very least hasn't rebounded from his injuries fast enough. It does make me a little concerned, as Haynesworth better work out now. I know we got by without Warren last year, but I was expecting that he could be a force this year.

***UPDATE***

There are rumors the Patriots will bring him back under a reworked deal.

Packers To Cut Nick Barnett

The Packers are going to cut LB Nick Barnett this week, which shouldn't come to much of a surprise as it will save Green Bay about $6.9 million in cap space. Barnett was only able to play in a handful of games last year, but he should be scooped up quickly as he is only 30 years old and is only a year removed from having 105 tackles, and 4 sacks.

The Packers should be fine as they made it just fine without him for most of last year, and still have a nice core of Matthews, Hawk, Bishop, and Zombo as their LBs.

Ravens About To Make A Bunch Of Cuts

Although NFL teams can't make cuts till Thursday at 4pm there are already pretty sound reports that the Ravens are going to be making some serious changes to there roster.

The Ravens are expected to cut Willis McGahee, Kelly Gregg, Derrick Mason, and Todd Heap. McGahee isn't a surprise at all he is going to make over 6 million next year, and really just isn't worth it at all, especially since Ray Rice is the obvious #1 back.

Although Mason is getting older (37) he is still coming off a pretty productive year (61 passes for 802 yards and seven touchdowns), but with Boldin on the roster the Ravens needed to find a way to save some money.

Heap is also still productive (five touchdowns, 40 receptions and 599 yards last season), but he has a hard time staying on the field. As for Gregg, he is scheduled to make over $3 million, but most people think there is a good chance the Ravens resign him.

The Ravens were getting a bit older, so I can understand the changeover, but I do think this could hurt them next year. McGahee sucks, but Mason and Heap have been good players for this team and they could miss that production. It will be interesting to see who steps up and picks up the slack.

Angels Finally Cut Scott Kazmir

The Angels have released left-hander Scott Kazmir. He has been getting lit up in AAA and had an ERA over 17. He has been a joke for awhile now. The weird thing is he is only 27 years old. Kazmir posted a 3.51 ERA and 742 strikeouts in 689 2/3 innings for the Rays between 2005 and 2008, including a league-high 239 K's in 2007. Then he went to the Angels and his career end (5.31 ERA and 5.7 K/9 in 35 starts).

He is young enough that if he can find his stuff he can make a comeback, and I guarantee some team will pick him up. I just don't know if he will ever find his stuff again. Mets are rumored to have interest...seems about right.

Haynesworth To Be Cut?

Here we go again....

There are rumors that the Redskins are finally going to cut ties with Albert Hanyesnworth after he was benched last Sunday after missing practice. At this point I think they should. They aren't going to make the playoffs, and this can't be helping any of the locker room problems. One would think that if a playoff team had a system that fit Haynesworth that he would be one hell of a pickup, but then again he could be a player that cashed in and just doesn't give a fuck anymore.

The Redskins are going to need to start from scratch next year. I think McNabb will be cut, and I assume Portis and Haynesworth will be gone too.

Steelers Cut Jeff Reed

The Steelers have finally cut Jeff Reed. He is one of the most accurate kickers of all-time, but has been all over the place this year already missing 7 field goals, including a chip shot against the Patriots. To be honest, this is a long time coming. This guy has been way too much of a headache for a kicker. He gets drunk, and makes an ass out of himself, and it is about time it caught up to him.

The Steelers will sign Shaun Suisham to replace Reed. Suisham has played with the Cowboys and Redskins. He is nothing special, but can't much worse then Reed has been this year. The funniest part of all this is that Reed was throwing a fit in the offseason about getting a new contract, and now has played himself right off the team.

Breaking News: Bills Cut Trent Edwards

The Buffalo Bills have released quarterback Trent Edwards in a surprise move that came a week after he lost the starting job for a second straight season.

I really don't have a lot to say about this. He is fucking terrible and it is time for the Bills to move on. Still, why wasn't this done during the offseason, and why the fuck didn't the Bills sign Vick? They have needed a QB for a long time, and I'm sorry but Ryan Fitzpatrick is not going to get it done, even though the Patriots made him look like a Pro Bowler yesterday.

Leinart To Be Cut?

We talked last week that Derek Anderson may have taken over the #1 QB spot for the Cardinals. Now there are rumors that the Cardinals may cut Leinart. According to these rumors the Cardinals locker room has 0 faith in Leinart, and that he is not a positive influence for the other young QBs (Max Hall and John Skelton) on the roster.

I am really kind of shocked about this. Leinart hasn't been amazing this preseason, but he is completing over 80% of his passes. He has much more upside then Anderson, but I guess when you have guys like Fitzgerald you want a guy who can throw deep, and Leinart hasn't proven he can do that on a consistent basis.

As for all the locker room stuff, I don't really know what to say. I know he was a slacker a couple years ago, but I would be surprised if he still is. If he is fooling around again then it is probably time to let him go, because is he isn't taking it seriously now with Warner gone, then he probably never will.

My prediction is that he is still the week 1 starter though.

Bills Cut Aaron Schobel

The Bills have cut Aaron Schobel, and you have to wonder if the Patriots are interested in making a run for this guy. No active player has more sacks of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady than Aaron Schobel, and the Patriots loving adding guys who have killed them in the past (Welker). Belichick of course refuses to speak on the matter...

Right now, I’m really just focused on our team,” Belichick said of Schobel. “I’m really just focused on our team. I couldn’t comment. He’s still under contract with Buffalo.

“But obviously, he’s a good player. He’s given us great competition on the field.”

Riveting stuff Belichick. Anyways, I have no way of knowing if the Patriots will indeed try to sign him, but I think they should. He is aging, but he still had 10 sacks last year, and consider Banta-Cain was our sack leader last year I think this would be a great pickup. Then again, I thought Owens would be a great pickup, and the Patriots decided that he wasn't worth signing for 1 year, so what do I know?

I have said it before and I'll say it again, I have not enjoyed what the Patriots have been doing to their team over the past year or so. They are one of the top franchises in the world in terms of money, it was an uncapped year, and they did nothing. Hope your wallets are fat Kraft, because I believe you fucked this team.

So...what would I have done?

Well Owens would be on this team. Brady would be making crazy money on a 1 year deal (same goes for Mankins), so that he feels like the Patriots actually look after him.

Brady can't be happy that they let the best QB they have ever had go to the last year on his deal before starting negotiations, when he is making less then David Garrard.

I would've brought in Kieth Bulluck (Pats lacked leadership on defense, can't think of anyone better to fit that role), and sign Aaron Schobel. Will they both work out? No idea, but it is an uncapped year and it can't hurt this defense. Also, there had to be something out there for RBs.

I rarely go after the Patriots, but I feel like they are cutting costs for no reason. I get the new CBA isn't out, but that doesn't mean that couldn't have done 1 year deals with all these guys.

Example: Brady 1 year deal, high money, with a guarantee that they will pay him at least top 3 QB money (unless injured) following the new CBA.

Why The Patriots Cut Shawn Springs

Last week it was announced that the Patriots had cut veteran cornerback Shawn Springs. I know he didn't do much last year (39 tackles and one interception in 13 games), but I was still surprised, since the Patriots still seem to be weak there. Today things started to become clearer, as a report was released stating that Springs had failed a physical prior to being released.

Belichick also stated that he wanted to get younger at the CB position, and making way for first-round draft pick Devin McCourty is a great way to start. Springs has not decided if he is going to retire, but says that he is eying a job as an ESPN analyst.

Patriots Cut Adalius Thomas

The only surprise here is that it took the Patriots this long to do it, but I guess they wanted to wait until after the draft (even though they really didn't do much to fill shit spot. Thomas was a major bust for the Patriots, even being benched at one point. Belichick was obviously sick of his "game" and attitude, so it was time for them to part ways.

In a lot of ways this sucks, because I still think this guy can play I just think he didn't fit into the Patriots system. I just wonder how they are going to fill out their linebacking core, and if I see Seau near this team I will climb to a top of a building and start picking off people.

Rams Cut Marc Bulger

The Rams cut Marc Bulger yesterday, which most likely means that Sam Bradford will be the #1 pick in the upcoming draft (good call DP). The question is what happens to Bulger now?

The hot rumor today is that the Steelers might jump on him as insurance in case this whole Big Ben raping chicks gets out of control. I don't think it would be a bad idea, but the Steelers offensive line would have to get a lot better. Bulger has shown in the past that he can be a serviceable QB, but he needs time in the pocket. When the Rams stopped blocking for him he folded then CC on a diet.

Still, what it comes down to is who would you rather trust...Batch or Bulger?

I would have to say I'd take Bulger even though Batch knows the system better.

Thomas Jones To Be Cut

The Jets are looking to cut Thomas Jones this week. Jones was due a $3 million roster bonus on top of a $2.8 million base salary this season. He and the Jets failed to reach a compromise on restructuring his contract; the team wanted him to take a pay cut. The 31-year-old is coming off a season in which he set career highs by rushing for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Jones is a little bit of an anomaly. Nobody respects him, but he is damned good. my early prediction is the Patriots because Bob hates him. You have to understand the Jets side of it too, because Shonne Greene is ready to go, and I think Leon Washington is coming back. If anyone wants a quick fix at RB this is the year as Thomas Jones, Ladainian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles and Jamal Lewis are all free agents.

Wizards Buyout Ilgauskas

The Washington Wizards and center Zydrunas Ilgauskas have reached an agreement on a contract buyout. So now you are going to see a lot of teams complain about this, because reports indicate that Ilgauskas is already back in Cleveland and they will resign him soon. To be honest, I don't have a problem with this at all. It is within the rules, and the Celtics did this a couple years back with Payton.

I am concerned about how good and deep the Cavs are now, but the question is whether or not they can gel in time. I think they will, and that makes me very worried as a Celtics fan.

Breaking News: Eagles Cut Brian Westbrook

The Philadelphia Eagles announced that they are releasing running back Brian Westbrook. The official announcement will be make around 3pm today. It has to be a sad day for any Philly fan. He has meant so much to that team, and it is really too bad he never got a ring with them.

Westbrook was one of the most versatile running backs I have ever seen. I kind of hope he retires. He has had way too many concussions and I would hate to see anything terrible happen to him. Truly one of the "good guys" in the NFL, and he will be missed (if he retires).

Chargers Cut LaDainian Tomlinson

HAHAHAHA. You fucking queer.

Ok, now that is out of my system. I think most people knew this was coming. He is 30 and his numbers have been declining for a couple years now. He is one of the best RBs I have ever seen, but what does he have left in the tank. He will absolutely find a new team. DP seems to think he might swallow his pride and come to the Pats. I can't see this, he has just talked too much shit over the years, and LT is a very prideful guy. My best guess are teams like KC, Seattle, and Houston.

Giants Cut Antonio Pierce

Reports are coming out that the Giants have cut veteran middle linebacker Antonio Pierce. The Giants are in need of a shakeup, so this shouldn't be too surprising, and I don't expect this to be the last one either.

Could he be a fit for the Patriots?

I think he could be. The Patriots have lost a lot of veteran talent when Bruschi, Harrison retired, and Seymour/Vrabel were traded. Pierce could be a nice person to turn to and help Mayo in the middle of that 3-4 defense. Pierce isn't overly athletic, but he can be a tackling machine, which is something the Patriots have been missing. If the Patriots could sign him to a short term deal I think it might be worth it.

Surprising Celtics News Lester Hudson Waived

The Boston Celtics waived Lester Hudson Wednesday. President of basketball operations Danny Ainge says they could sign him to a 10-day contract once he clears waivers on Friday, or they could leave the 15th spot on the roster open.

"This just gives us a roster spot that we don't feel we need to use right now," Ainge told the Boston Herald. "We do save some money with this, but that wasn't why we did it." ESPN

I was a little taken back by this because Lester has been o.k. for a late second round pick. Unless they make a move for newly waived Rafer Alston. (which I don't think will happen because he has had some troubles with Eddie House and Rajon Rondo) I believe Hudson will be back, but I had faith in the kid.

Yankees Cut Wang

"Wang, who was not tendered a contract by the Yankees by Saturday's deadline, is going through injury rehabilitation and is expected to be ready to pitch early in the season. Wang will meet with Dr. James Andrews in early January, and after returning to his homeland of Taiwan for a two-week stay, he will return to work out in Arizona (ESPN)."

It is amazing how far this guy has fallen in such a short time. It will be interesting to see if he can ever get it going again. There are many teams that are rumored to have interest, but his agent doesn't think he will sign for a couple months. This makes sense since it will take him that long to be able to throw a side session and show everyone he is healthy. My guess is that he makes his way to the NL before spring straining starts.

Red Sox Release Kottaras

"Catcher George Kottaras has been released by the Red Sox, according to a report on WEEI.com. MLB.com also indicated Kottaras was released in its transactions listings (Boston.com)."

Kottaras did his job. He caught Wakefield well and actually had a better batting average then Tek, but then again who didn't. There was just no room to keep this kid around with Tek coming back and V-Mart getting most of the time behind the plate. He will definitely be signed by another team before spring training.
