Bracket Updates

DP's

BMack

Well there is no way I can lose with all of BMacks teams not advancing and with me having Kentucky winning the championship. So if Kentucky losses we tie, if Kentucky wins I win. I'm fine with all of it resting on Kentucky's shoulders.

Top 5 DC Challenge
Group Standings
Rank Team Name Score Correct Best Score Best Correct Champion
1 John Swenson 63 42 69 43 Kansas (155)
2 josh dixon 60 37 74 39 Kentucky (163)
3 dan ebner 55 39 55 39 San Diego St. (134)
3 Stephanie Fiandaca 55 38 55 38 Kansas (151)

Josh Dixon has the best chance to win it all with Kentucky still in it.

BMack's Bracket

Yea, I know having Michigan State in the Final Four is fucking ridiculous, but I'm a huge fan of this team, and they really should be a lot better. First time I am not picking Michigan State or UNC winning it all, so maybe DP can finally beat me.

Ty Lawson Is Game-Time Decision

We'll we are going to find out how hurt Ty Lawson is when UNC plays LSU tomorrow. He was able to practice today, so now they need to see how his toe responds. If it swells he won't play, but it they are able to control it I would expect him to be in the game. LSU is no pushover, and DP has LSU knocking out UNC, so I really need Lawson to get his ass back on the court. I think he will, and UNC will handle LSU.

I only got Illinois wrong, but Bob's late games killed him. Anyways, here they are updated.

Longoria Joins Team USA

"Third baseman Evan Longoria will be joining Team USA, according to Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman. Longoria will replace injured Chipper Jones on the U.S. roster for the semifinal round of the World Baseball Classic (ESPN)."

I really want to see Team USA with this Baseball Classic. I don't know why, but I am into this. Longoria is sick, and he can only help. USA is going to have some really tough teams to get through if they want to win it all. I am not sure if they can do it. Personally I think Japan is nasty, and they are going to be the toughest team to get through (Venezuela is also nasty). Longoria will not play first, as a lot of people thought he would. The rays came out and said they didn't want him doing that, which I don't understand. I don't know what they are going to do with the roster, since David Wright is also on the team.

NCAA Game Updates

#10 Maryland 84 #7 Cal 71

This game had me nervous for awhile, but with about 10 mins left in the 2nd half Maryland showed they are the much better team. Maryland was led by Junior guard Greivis Vasquez who threw down 27 points with 5 boards and 4 assists. The big difference was that Maryland was able to keep Cal from getting hot from outside. Cal only shot .292 (7-24) from beyond the arc. Cal couldn't get to the basket, so they were forced to take the shots from the outside, but they weren't falling and now Maryland moves on to play Memphis.

#1 UConn 103 #16 Chattanooga 47

This game was over before it started. UConn had a 48-20 lead at half time and never looked back. I wonder if they rubbed it in for their coach that is sick...UConn now moves on to play Texas A&M.

#1 UNC 101 #16 Radford 58

Another game that doesn't really need to be relived. Wayne Ellington had a hell of a game scoring 25 points with 8 board, as UNC easily moves on to play LSU, which could be a very tough game for them.

#5 Purdue 61 #12 Northern Iowa 56

Late in the game Northern Iowa made it interesting, but Purdue was able to hold on by hitting their free throws to move on. You have to give credit to Iowa as they haven't even made the NIT over the past 2 years, and yet almost were able to make a miracle run against Purdue. Hopefully Miss. St. doesn't let me down, because I think they can beat this Purdue team.

DP and I are both 7 for 7 so far on our brackets...

Kings @ Bruins Preview

The Bruins, who once looked like a lock to win the 1st seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, have seen that lead dwindle to 4 points. The good news is that the Kings are terrible on the road, and the Bruins should be well rested after having a couple days off.

The problem with the Bruins is that they don't play a full game. Take last game for an example, they were in control of that game till they let up 4 3rd period goals and lost the game 6-4. As I said earlier I think they need to go back to being a dump and chase team. Let the offense set up, and keep the other team from making quick breakouts. The goals don't all need to be pretty, and I think that was what coach Julien was trying to get across when he called out Savard (read earlier post, if you don't know what I am talking about).

I expect the Bruins to come out strong tonight, and put away this team early.

The game starts at 7pm on NESN.

NCAA Early Games

#8 LSU 75 #9 Butler 71

LSU's senior Marcus Thourton had a sick game scoring 30 points with 6 boards and 5 assists. LSU controlled most of this game, but let Butler sneak back in during the 2nd half. LSU showed some life on defense, as they had 8 blocks in the game. The Bulldogs (26-6) made things interesting by twice pulling within three in the final minute, but Johnson hit one of two free throws with 4.5 seconds left to seal it. This is the first time Butler has lost in the first round since 2000. LSU will not face the winner of the UNC vs. Radford game.

#2 Memphis 81 #15 Northridge 70

Memphis survived a scare today, as they were actually losing this game until about 5 mins into the 2nd half. Then Memphis went crazy, and leading the way was sophomore guard Roburt Sallie, who only averaged 4.5 points during the regular season, ended today's game with an amazing 35 points (10-15 from 3pt range). Incredible...that why you have to love the NCAA tournament. Memphis goes on to play the winner of the Maryland vs. Cal game.

#9 Texas A&M 79 #8 BYU 66

Why anyone would ever trust BYU is beyond me. This is now the 7th straight time BYU has been knocked out in the first round. Bryan Davis led the way with 21 points, as Texas A&M really had this game under control from the start. They will not face the winner of UConn vs. Chattanooga on Saturday.

Drunk Squirrel

Not sure if we had this up before, but funny anways....

Claude Julien Calls Out Marc Savard

"Claude Julien had a mixed review for the performance of top center Marc Savard, finding fault with his tendency to force passes and commit turnovers. ‘He does make mistakes,” the coach said. “He’s a guy who turns the puck over with some forced plays at times. His competitive level is always there. He competes hard. The one thing he can certainly help this team with right now is (cutting down) those kind of turnovers that end up hurting us. ‘One of them was the empty-net goal in Pittsburgh. (That should have been) an easy pass to the strong-side point instead of trying to put it through guys. Those kind of things happen too often for Savvy (Boston Herald)."

If the Bruins are going to get out of this funk they are going to need players like Marc Savard to step up. I really enjoy watching him play, but I know what Julien is saying. It actually isn't just him. The Bruins have been getting way to fancy with the puck, while trying to break into the offensive zone. They need to start grinding out games, and play dump and chase. That is what wins playoff games. It will be very interesting to see if this fires up Marc Savard, but like I said this really could be said about 3-4 Bruins forwards. The good news is that they have had a couple days to clear their heads, and get some practice in. Hopefully they will be reinvigorated when they host the Kings tonight.

NFL Rule Change

ESPN's John Clayton notes today, the competition committee is proposing that non-playoff teams automatically pick between 1-20, regardless of record. Then playoff teams would draft 21-32.

Man, this would have been nice for the Patriots, as they got fucked this year. First they were 11-5 and didn't make the playoffs, then they end up with the 23rd pick in the draft behind 2 playoff team (Chargers/Eagles). It is fucking bullshit, and I hope they change it. It is not fair that a team is penalized for having a good record, when other teams with worse records make the playoffs.

And yes I am incredibly bitter about this....

Screwed the Pooch

Michelle Owen of Indiana was worried that her boyfriend had used her computer to search for child porn [note to FBI word search computer: these are not the droids you're looking for]. So like any responsible citizen dating a suspected child molester, she took it in for the police to examine.

…but her plan backfired when cops discovered two videos of her engaged in illicit acts with a dog [sad trombone sound]. Owen, 24, was charged last week with two felony bestiality counts in connection with the video files, which a detective found in the laptop’s “recycle bin.” At the time Owen asked cops to search the computer, she was locked up in the Johnson County Jail on a public intoxication charge (which violated the terms of her release in a prior drunk driving case). According to a police affidavit, a copy of which you’ll find here, a cop told Owen that he had found videos of her on the laptop and asked if she “knew what those files might be.” Owen replied, “The one with the dog.” Cops believe that the dog in question, Toby, is a beagle. After asking if she was “going to be charged with this,” Owen said that the videos “were just something she did when she was drunk and barely remembers it.” [thesmokinggun]

I really don't want to ask this question, but how does a woman fuck a dog? Fucking a dog would mean that dog was a willing participant right? Unless she was like fucking the dog with like a toy....OK, I am done, I have grossed myself out...

(in case you were wondering it was a beagle)

Warner "Feeling Great" After Surgery

"Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left hip. The team said that the operation to repair a torn labrum and "clean up some loose fragments" was performed Tuesday by Dr. Marc Philippon at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo (Sportsline)."

I hate Kurt Warner with every inch of my body, but I have to admit he did a hell of a job getting the Cardinals to the Super Bowl last year. Sure he has been in some incredible offenses, and that is the reason why he has had success, but you can't fault him for that. If the Cardinals are going to do anything they are going to need him 100%, and from the sound of it he will be fine for the opening of the 2009 season. Still, I think they are going to need a lot more out of their running game if they are going to have any shot at repeating their success that they had in the NFC last year.
