Drew Brees Wins SI Sportsman Of The Year

Drew Brees was honored as Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year for his championship on the field and his charity off it. I really can't come up with someone who deserves it more. He finally got the Saints a championship, he has worked nonstop to help that community ( his foundation has worked with nearly 50 New Orleans schools and organizations to aid in recovery), and overall is just a good guy. So, good for him, the city obviously needed this team to lift their spirits after Katrina, and though it solved very little it at the very least let them forget their troubles for a little while.

Drew Brees is an example of what a professional athlete should be.

Brees Lobbying For LT?

On Tuesday, Brees tweeted the following...

"I would love to get LT in the black and gold. Crazier things have happened."

This has started a lot of talk about whether or not the Saints would be interested in bringing in LT. Personally, I think this is fucking retarded. They have Bush, who is a pass catching RB with speed, and 2 other solid RBs in Thomas, and Bell. Why mess any of that up by bringing this piece of shit to your team? Sorry, that was a little overboard, but the Saints have a good thing going, why mess up that chemistry on offense?

LT should go to a team where he could be a nice complement to a solid runner. He has stated that he will only play for a contender, and as much as I hate to say it wouldn't the Packers make sense? They have been looking for a #2 to go along with Grant, and LT could give them a nice passing option out of the backfield. Just a thought, but I think it makes sense.

Drew Brees Already A Hall of Famer?

This has been on my mind all morning. Is Drew Brees already a Hall of Famer. My answer in short is no, but he will be.

So far in Brees career he has had 31,450 yards 213 TDs 112 INTs (including playoffs). He holds basically every major single season records for the Saints, and has even set some NFL records...

- Most completions for a season - 440 (2007 Season)
- Highest Completion percentage for a season - 70.62 (2009 Season)
- Most completions for a Super Bowl game (tied) - 32 (Super Bowl XLIV)

Pretty impressive for someone who is only 31 years old. There is no doubt in my mind that Drew Brees will be a Hall of Famer, because I believe that this young, high powered offense is going to be able to help him keep putting up amazing stats for at least the next 2-3 year, which will be enough to raise his numbers to the point that there is no question that he is a Hall of Famer. I've always been a big Drew Brees fan and I am glad that he has found a home where is will be treated like the great QB that he is. A couple more years of this and I think he enters the Manning, and Brady class.

Saints 31, Colts 17

What a game, much closer and more exciting than the final score suggests. In fact, the last three Super Bowls have all been instant classics.

Coming into the game, the primary storyline and general consensus was that this would be Peyton Manning's coronation as King of QBs. And while the Saints had a more compelling backstory, their mere presence in the Big Game was victory enough for the City of New Orleans. The Saints were definitely David against Goliath.

During the postgame malarkey, the media kept talking about the Saints' "comeback." But they only fell behind 10-0. Their offense struggled to get going, but give credit to their defense for keeping it a 10-0 deficit.

The Saints adjusted their passing routes, and took advantage of the ample time Drew Brees had in the pocket. Apart from Freeney's one-handed sack, Brees was hardly ever rushed, always had a clear line of sight, and had excellent passing lanes. A Saints field goal, combined with the Colts going 3 and out, was the turning point of the game. And it came 7 minutes into the 2nd quarter.

The Saints were a 4th & goal at the 1, off tackle rushing play away from tying the game as early as the 2nd quarter. But even after that failed, the Saints' defense stopped Manning in the 2 minute drill, giving Garrett Hartley another chance at a long field goal.

Garrett Hartley is a bit of an unsung hero in this game. Not only was he a clutch in the NFC Championship, but he all three of his field goals, all over 44 yards. Kickers have really struggled this postseason, but Hartley was 5/5, with all of his kicks 40+ yarders.

The Saints were super aggressive to start the 2nd half. They were also extremely confident in their defense, which had adapted to Manning and the Colts.

Going for it on 4th and Goal, trying a random onside kick, I was reminded of Bill Belichick. In 2005, the Patriots tried an onside kick in the 3rd quarter of an eventual loss to the Colts. And we all remember 4th & 2. It's amazing how much execution can make a coach look good.

The onside kick set up a Saints touchdown, which was good because the Colts' offense woke up on the next drive with a touchdown of their own.

The Saints answered with a field goal to retake the lead at 17-16. It was starting to look like this would be an offensive slugfest, with the last team with the ball winning. But it wasn't. The Colts were shutout in the 4th quarter.

The New Orleans defense, unsung heroes for the 2 weeks leading up to the Super Bowl (for the whole season really), and still unsung heroes, stopped the Colts, and forced a long field goal attempt, that was short and to the left. The game was over, even though nobody yet knew it.

Brees engineered a 58 yard touchdown drive that consisted of 2 runs and 7 short passing plays. Only one play of the drive was longer than 10 yards, and that was a Reggie Bush run. The Saints' offensive adjustments were complete, they took advantage of the time Brees had in the pocket to send their big receivers on complicated and involved patterns. This left players open underneath or on comeback routes, and with room to advance once they caught the ball.

But the outcome was still in doubt, down by 7 with 5:42 left is supposedly when Peyton "Best QB Ever" Manning shines. And he did advance the ball into Saints territory. But as I've mentioned, the Saints had adjusted. Tracy Porter smelled the ball, and picked off Manning. It was vintage Ty Law.

To put an exclamation point on the 31-17 win, the Saints defense came up with a goal-line stand as the clock ticked away.

The Saints deserved this win, as a team, not just because of Katrina or anything. They played well, and actually wanted to go undefeated, unlike the Colts.

Brees was the MVP of the game, but the Saints won as a team. From Hartley to Bush, to Colston, Henderson, Shockey, and the entire defense. And Sean Payton, too, who wasn't afraid of being second guessed. He knew that winners are aggressive, losers are passive. He went for the win and his players executed.

Drew Brees Needs To Get A few Things Off His Chest

"I can say this after that experience -- the worst thing we can do is shut that baby down, for a lot of reasons," Brees said. "But I think there's a big misconception as to how we are treating those prisoners; those detainees over there. They are being treated probably 10 times better than any prisoner in a U.S. prison."

"I mean, they're allowed to call and write letters home, and receive letters and calls. They get five opportunities a day to pray, and they have arrows in the prison pointing towards where Mecca is. And the prison goes dead silent so these guys can have their religious time. They have rooms where they can watch movies and play Nintendo Wii. So I think that just goes ahead and says it right there."

Ummmmmmmm. I like it. Normally I hate when athletes and celebrities make bold claims, however, I love Brees' bold claim. And I believe him. Before this came out, I thought Guantanamo Bay was where they torture people and do terrible things, but apparently it is just a vacation resort. Kinda makes me want to be a terrorist.

Drew Brees: Offensive Player of the Year

Drew Brees won offensive Player of the Year today. I love this pick since he put up ridiculous stats. The only reason he was out of the MVP race was because the Saints sucked this year. Brees had one of the better statistical years for a QB ever throwing for 5,084 yards, which was only 16 yards short of Dan Marino's record. If the Saints can fix their defense I think you'll see Brees name on the MVP trophy next year.

DP's Take:

Drew is my personal friend, and is the man.

New Endorsement: Drew Brees

Our newest and possibly most famous endorsement came like a couple weeks ago, but I haven't been able to get the picture on until now. Drew Brees and I were eating dinner and the topic of Dueling Couches came up and I could tell he was into it. I am pretty sure he believes that DC is the best sporting blog on the internet. He also hinted that Dueling Couches is his inspiration to break Dan Marino's passing yards record.

So with that being said, Welcome to the Dueling Couches family Drew.
