Torre Won't Coach Past 2010

"Joe Torre says he doesn't plan to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers after his contract expires. "I have one year on my contract and I don't anticipate it being more than that," he said Tuesday, two days before the Dodgers open the NLCS against Philadelphia.

However, he noted, "I've said that before and my wife doesn't believe me at all."

The 69-year-old manager is in the middle of a three-year deal he signed nearly two years ago after 12 seasons guiding the New York Yankees. The Dodgers are 179-145 with two consecutive NL West titles under Torre. His 83 postseason victories are more than any other manager in major league history, and his 14 consecutive playoff appearances as a manager are tied with Atlanta's Bobby Cox (1991-2005). General manager Ned Colletti said Tuesday that he'll sit down with Torre to discuss his future after the season ends. If the Dodgers were to advance to their first World Series since 1988, Torre said he doesn't think he'll walk away a year early (Sportsline)."

Torre will be 70 years old when his contract is up and I think he will retire. DP and I were talking about this the other night. DP thinks there is a good shot that he could coach someone else after he leaves the Dodgers. I think this is it for him. What else does this guy have left to prove? He is one of the greatest managers of all time, and if he can win one with the Dodgers it will only further prove it...

Pedro To Dodgers?

"The New York Mets don't have any interest in bringing back Pedro Martinez. But another one of Martinez's former employers, the Los Angeles Dodgers, could emerge as a candidate to rescue him from unemployment (ESPN)."

Pedro should have retired 2-3 years ago, but he did show me enough during the WBC that I think he is better then a lot of the 5th starters in the MLB. The Dodgers have a weak pitching staff, and I actually think this is a good move for them. Pedro will be cheap, and who knows maybe he can provide a spark on their team. Anyways, Torre seems interested...

"Although Torre watched Martinez in the WBC only in passing, he saw enough to believe that Martinez can still help a club. Martinez threw 58 strikes and only 17 balls in his two appearances against the Netherlands."Just from the little I've seen of him pitching, he may not have the velocity he once had,'' Torre said. I will always love Pedro, and if he wants to play I hope he can find a job on a team that actually has a chance to win some games.

This may not be a big deal for Clemens' up coming trial, but it can't help. Still, you have to be surprised that Torre is taking shots at all his former players. When I think of "classiest coaches of all time" I would have had Torre up there at #1 or #2, but now with all these shots being taken, I am just not so sure anymore. Clemens is a douche bag, and hopefully will have a live a couple years behind bars, but isn't there some kind of trust between a player and coach? You don't just leave and then start taking shots at the guys who got you World Series rings. This is just starting to get out of control, and I am really starting to lose a lot of respect for Joe Torre.

Torre Rips Yankees

ESPN has been covering this story all weekend, and I have to say I was kind of surprised that Torre came out and blasted the Yankees in this new book. The book apparently says that A-Rod and Torre never got along, and a lot of the team really didn't respect A-Rod at all. It goes on to say that A-Rod became obsessed with his rivalry with Jeter. Obviously as a Sox fan, I just hope this is just another thing that will add more controversy to the Yankees, and they will fall apart much like the Cowboys did this year. Still, I am shocked that Torre is the one what really gave the insight to his former teams problems. He has always been such a class act, so it surprises me that he would rip the team he won a bunch of championships with. I guess A-Rod, and the Yankees really got under his skin and he just wanted to get it out, or he is just like Canseco, and anyone else who write a book, he just wants to sell more copies.
