Perk Overrated

SI.com does these quirky player polls that really cut to the bottom of the most important issues in sports today. We've all seen Rodney Harrison win the dirtiest player poll year after year (though Ryan Clark should be taking that spot away any day now).

Well, the new poll is which NBA player thinks he's a lot better than he really is. Boston's own Kendrick Perkins took home the gold with a solid 8% of his peers calling him out. Boston has a tendency to overrate their own so I'm sure there will be some mild outrage over this. When you take a step back and look at it objectively (something DP hasn't been able to do since grade school), it makes sense. Perkins is only slightly more overrated then Rajon. I guess the difference is, at least Rondo knows his shit stinks and doesn't walk around with a giant head.

Kendrick Perkins, Celtics C.....8%
DeShawn Stevenson, Wizards G.....8%
Rashad McCants, T-Wolves G.....5%
Dahntay Jones, Nuggets G......5%
Damon Jones, Bucks G.....5%

Poll was conducted on 2/9/09.

The Swashbuckling Gunslinging Samurai Retires

Outside of the NFL offices in New York, Commissioner Roger Goodell was spotted hanging a “Going Out of Business” sign on the front door. The National Football League is selling off all its assets and declaring preemptive bankruptcy. Why? Because Brett Favre has hung up his guns and pirate swords.

I’m being sarcastic. One of the most overrated, overhyped, overdiscussed players in modern American sports is finally gone. Watching ESPN, the “experts” dubbed this the “End of the Brett Favre era.” Sorry, but this isn’t the Brett Favre era. This isn’t anybody’s era. The NFL these days is all about no team becoming a dynasty, and no player having an era. And 1 Super Bowl win, and another Super Bowl loss hardly qualifies as an era.

Babe Ruth had an era. Ty Cobb had an era. Michael Jordan had an era. Bill Russell had an era. Wayne Gretzky had an era. Joe Montana had an era. Terry Bradshaw had an era. Brett Favre DID NOT have an era.

Favre has never been criticized by anyone, ever. Or so it seems. He was adored for having a pain killer addiction. People laughed at the way he collapsed for his buddy Michael Strahan to get the sack record. And people rarely mention Brett Favre’s most telling record: most interceptions thrown EVER.

I’m not saying Favre wasn’t great. He’s a Hall of Famer, one of the best ever, so on and so forth. But I’m fucking glad he’s gone. No more SportsCenter highlights of the swashbuckler, gunslinger, riverboat gambler quarterback taking a 3 step drop, scrambling 20 yards to the right, throwing against his body 40 yards downfield and being lucky enough to find a receiver.

And you know what makes me really happy? His last pass in the NFL was a token Brett Favre “why the fuck not?” high risk interception that was completely unnecessary and cost his team the game.

I'm Already Sick Of It

Okay, he's legendary. Okay, he has all the passing records. Okay, he's a stand-up guy. Enough, I am already sick of this Brett Favre stuff. I think he has been a dick in recent years by taking his sweet ass time letting his team know if he was retiring or not (and NO he doesn't have that privilege). I think the Packers are secretly relieved this guy is gone so they can move on without him holding them in limbo every year. Not to mention they won't have to deal with him making stupid throws that lose the Pack games. Now they can look to the future which is Aaron Rodger's and see what the kids got. Brett was a good QB, but his last throw being a pick is fitting. He is not a top 5 qb, and the people saying he is the greatest should be shot.

Duke Sucks

I know the picture is a little outdated but, that is how I felt about that one person and how I feel about that whole school. Yesterday, Dickie V's wet dream lost to Wake Forest, The final score was 86-73. I watched a little of this game and Wake was able to exploit Dukes weakness. Penetrating their zone, (make any obvious joke here about penetrating), but seriously, Wake was just too fast for Duke and got to the basket almost at will. Duke will need to fix this before tournament time or expect an early exit. God I DESPISE this team so much.

Captain Is Angry; Episode 1

Begin rant

“Curt Schilling arrived to Fort Myers with his 12 year old son Gehrig.” Who the hell names their kid Gehrig? I can understand the tribute to The Iron Horse, but then why not name the kid Lou? What’s wrong with Lou? Lou’s a damn good name. And if Curt wanted to be creative with the kid’s name, why not give him Lou Gehrig’s REAL name: Ludwig. That’s right, Lou's German parents gave him a German name. Ludwig Heinrich Gehrig. Weird how you don’t hear that too often. Germans are scary.

We forget how great Gehrig was. Unlike Cal Ripken, Gehrig had a spectacular career that went beyond a consecutive games streak. He had a .340 career average, and a career OPS of 1.079. He was selected for 7 All-Star games (the first 7 ever). He won 2 MVPs, somehow finished 5th in MVP voting when he won the Triple Crown in 1934, is 17th all-time in hitting, 5th all-time in OBP, 3rd all-time in slugging, 10th all-time in runs, 24th all-time in homeruns, 5th all-time in RBI. Had he been given a few more seasons he would have 3,000+ hits and 500+ HR.

How overrated is Cal Ripken? His 11,551 at-bats allowed him to amass solid career numbers. Solid, but not great. His .276 career average dulls his 3,184 hits. His .340 OBP (remember, that’s what Gehrig’s BATTING AVERAGE was) dulls his 1,647 runs. His .447 slugging dulls his 1,695 RBI, and his 431 HR.

I‘m not saying Ripken wasn‘t great or doesn‘t deserve to be in Cooperstown, but he‘s nowhere near the greatest SS of all-time as some “experts“ claimed as he neared retirement. Honus Wagner (a.k.a. Johannes Wagner, another Kraut) had 1,700+ RBI and a .327 career average, folks.

The last straw was the 2001 All-Star Game. Chan Ho Park served up a meatball, Ripken hit a bullshit solo homerun, and was eventually named the game’s MVP. Roger Clemens threw 2 perfect innings but I guess that wasn’t good enough for MVP.

This leads me to another overrated superstar: Brett Favre. Most touchdowns ever, most interceptions ever. A graph of Favre’s yearly QB Rating spikes up and down like the EKG readout of a heart patient watching Scarlet Johansen eating out Jessica Alba. He has no consistency at all.

People talk about Favre as if he’s won more than one Super Bowl. And that game was won by Desmond Howard returning kicks, and the Packers defensive line rattling Drew Bledsoe to throw interceptions.

And how come he gets a free pass on that painkiller addiction? How come all he got was sympathy and not criticism? What if it had been some other kind of drug? What if he had been some other player? And how come when he rolled over and played dead for Michael Strahan, he didn’t get one bit of criticism? How come he gets praised for poor ball control and pass selection? What the fuck does "gunslinger" or "swashbuckler" mean in a football context?

Fittingly, Favre’s last NFL pass may be that retarded interception in overtime against the Giants. I can’t think of a better way for him to end his career.

End rant.
