The Chiefs Have Weis and Crennel... Who Are Our Coordinators Again?

I consider myself a relatively serious Patriots fan. I've been to every home game the last 3 years (albeit in a working capacity, but I've still been there rain/shine). I fancy myself more knowledgeable and less emotional than most Pats fans, but even I had to look up who the Patriots' coordinators are.

Dean Pees is the defensive coordinator, and there is no offensive coordinator.

Charlie Weis was available to be a coordinator. The Chiefs grabbed him. There is no offensive coordinator in Foxborough, and the Patriots made not a single effort to seduce their Prodigal Coach back home. Apparently it was felt that nobody is better than Weis.



I remember the actual moment I began to miss Charlie Weis, and Josh McDaniels, too. It was Week 10 in Indy. Right before the Pats went for it on 4th & 2, they were confused, and took a timeout. That lack of a timeout prevented them from challenging what should have been a much closer spot of the ball.



But I remember watching NFL Films, and the DVD 21, and watching Weis on the Patriot sidelines, preparing his unit for any and all contingencies. "If we stop them here, we have X yards to go for a field goal. If they get a field goal, we'll probably have Y seconds to get a touchdown." That kind of thing.

Weis thought ahead. He was a chess master, thinking 8 minutes ahead in a game. If he wanted to go for it on 4th & 2, he would've made the decision when it was 2nd & 10.

There would've been no need for that timeout.

Maybe Weis and Crennel don't want to return to New England. Maybe they don't want to take that apparent step backward in their careers. That's understandable. But did the Patriots even call them or their agents. I certainly hope they did. Because those are two premier coordinators. Not only that, it's going to be some time before another team steals them away as head coaches.



The Patriots apparently chose a void over Charlie Weis. And I just don't get that. Especially after a season of bland plays and total offensive failure in key moments.

Chiefs Hire Romeo Crennel

"As expected, the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday officially hired Romeo Crennel to be their new defensive coordinator. Crennel, who replaces Clancy Pendergast, reunites with general manager Scott Pioli and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who all worked together in New England during their Super Bowl runs. Weis was hired by Kansas City last week following his ouster as Notre Dame's coach (ESPN)."

This is exactly what I wanted the Patriots to do, but good for Pioli, he has done a hell of a job. Weis and Crennel might not turn the team around in a year, but I have no doubt that they will point them in the right direction. The Chiefs are a very young team, and it will be interesting to see how quickly they can learn the new offensive and defensive systems.

Chiefs Going After Weis

"Recently, there was word that Charlie Weis could become the next offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs. While head coach Todd Haley did not comment specifically on Weis in his remarks to the Kansas City Star following the season finale on Sunday, he did allow that hiring a new offensive coordinator was in the plans.

Appearing on "Mike and Mike in the Morning", senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen indicated that Weis could land in KC "soon." How soon? Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated relayed word from a source that Weis could be hired within the week (ESPN)."

There had been rumors that Romeo Crennel was also going to the Cheifs earlier in the week (there are now rumors he could be heading to the Giants). I think hiring both these guys is a smart move. They are both proven winners (when coordinators), and easily could get Kansas City back on track. I really wanted to see the Patriots bring these guys back, but I am not surprised at all that Pioli is making strong moves to land them...

Romeo, Romeo. Why Not Reacquire Romeo?

Why don't the Pats make an effort to make Romeo Crennel defensive coordinator once more. The Pats won 3 titles thanks in large part to his defenses. Sure, the players on the field have changed. No more Ty Law or Willie Mcginest. Rodney and Tedy are old. But Crennel's defenses made mediocre defenders into playmakers. Eugene Wilson fell apart after Crennel left. Roman Phifer, Bobby Hamilton, Bryan Cox, Tebucky Jones, Tyrone Poole; in Crennel's defenses these guys made game-changing plays. Now NOBODY makes the big play on the defensive side of the ball.

I want Romeo Crennel back as Patriots' defensive coordinator.

Crennel Likely Asked To Be Defensive Coordinator

Brown's head coach Romeo Crennel is asked to step down from head coach and to take their defensive coordinator job. This goes to show you that not all coordinators no matter what system they come from aren't a sure thing. Both Crennel and Weis have been failures as head coaches and should be only coordinators. Also, what sucks for me is that this may mean former Steelers coach Bill Cowher may be their man. He is a legendary coach and to play in the same division as the Steelers would be crushing to Pittsburgh.

Anderson Lost For Year

"Just several days after losing Brady Quinn to a broken finger, Cleveland also lost Derek Anderson to a left MCL injury in the waning moments of Sunday's 10-6 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts. The recovery time for MCL injuries is usually 3-4 weeks, which likely means Anderson is out for the remainder of the 2008 season (ESPN)."

The Browns are just a mess right now. First, they lose Brady Quinn to a broken finger, and now they have lost Anderson with a knee injury. Crennel is definitely going to get canned after this year, and this team is going to have a lot of questions to answer this offseason. Is Quinn their QB of the future? What to do with Anderson? How can they fix this awful defense? How do they get Braylon Edwards back to being one of the most feared WRs in the game? The Browns should be very busy this offseason, but before they can do anything, they need to figure out their identity as a team.
