Red Sox Looking To Deal For Erik Bedard

"The Red Sox, reports FOXSports.com, are "all over" M's lefty Erik Bedard and will scout his first start off the disabled list Friday. Boston is not alone, however, as the rival Yankees have interest, too (ESPN)."

Bedard would really help this team right now if he can stay healthy, but that always is a question with Bedard. If the Red Sox could eventually get Buchholz back to 100% and bring in Bedard they would have one filthy rotation heading into the playoffs.

Lester
Beckett
Buchholz
Bedard
Lackey

And since you don't need a 5th starter in the playoffs I would feel fantastic about their chances of winning it all. I agree with what DP said earlier, this might be the best Red Sox team I have ever seen, and they can get this rotation right they will be unstoppable.

Another Weekend, Another Red Sox Sweep

Wakefield can give up 7 runs and John Lackey can pitch and yet the Sox dominate another weekend. It also didn't matter that we were facing arguably the best pitcher in the league in Felix Hernandez and rookie phenom Michael Pineda, the Red Sox offense carried them once again. They scored 22 runs in the passed 3 games against Seattle and Josh Reddick has been a major part of that.

Speaking of Josh Reddick, JD Drew was just put on the DL today and that could mean the end of his free falling career. Reddick has been unbelievable, his stat line is:

I like him going forward over making a move, unless it's for a huge name.

Next up, Kansas City

Mariners vs Red Sox Preview

The Red Sox hope to feed off of last nights win as they take on the Mariners tonight. On the bump for the Sox is their Ace Dice K aka Ace K who is coming off of 2 hits off of his last 15 innings against, for Seattle they turn to Jason Vargas who is 0-2 with a 5.53 era.

This is a good offense to go against after facing a decent Orioles line up. The Mariners are allergic to offense and if it wasn't for Felix Hernandez or Michael Pineda no one would be excited about this team. Their only offensive player is Justin Smoak who has been on a tear recently, but if we don't kill ourselves with walks our letting Ichiro or Figgins tear up the basepaths we should be alright.

Sox win 6-0

TOP 25 UNDER 25 - #5 Felix Hernandez

FELIX HERNANDEZ - Starting Pitcher, Seattle Mariners

We're finally down to the top 5 athletes under the age of 25. Felix Hernandez is another star athlete stuck in a terrible situation. Playing for the Mariners in the most remote MLB city (great town, just not a major media market and far from other MLB teams) has led to Hernandez being mired in obscurity. Hardcore seam heads and saber metrics statisticians, who live in their pajamas and eat a diet consisting of spaghettios, regard Hernandez as the best pitcher in baseball. However, since he plays on one of the worst teams in the league that is essentially devoid of national attention outside of the occasional Ichiro highlight, he is a bit unknown to those who don't follow the game so closely.

That's not going to hold him down on this list, however. After becoming the starting pitcher with the fewest wins to ever win a Cy Young Award in 2010, Hernandez has finally started to get some of the attention he deserves. Unfortunately for the rest of baseball I highly doubt that he'll remain on the irrelevant Mariners very much longer. He'll probably be spending his Octobers helping some team win WS titles in the near future.

Before the world had even heard of King Felix, as he's known to his loyal followers, Hernandez was just your average teenage Venezuelan - if the average 14 yr old Venezuelan could throw 94 mph! Discovered by a Mariners scout at that tender age, the team began following him closely and once he had graduated from high school he signed his first pro contract. He chose the Mariners because Freddy Garcia was his favorite player and was playing for Seattle at the time. Oh youngsters and their silly role models.

From there it was a quick jaunt through the Mariners' farm system. In 2003 he tore through the lower levels, and by 2005 he was in AAA and was considered the best pitching prospect in baseball. He made his major league debut on August 4 of that year and finished the season. He wears number 34 for Seattle to honor Freddy Garcia, who has since bounced around the big leagues with various clubs.

2006 marked Hernandez's first full season of big league action, and he has been nothing short of individually dominant since - despite Seattle being a constant doormat in the A.L. West. In order, since 2006, their record has been 78-84, 88-74, 61-101, 85-77, and 61-101 again in 2010. Gross. And yet, Hernandez has managed a Win-Loss record of 71-53, nearly 20 games over .500. Remarkable.

Among his big league achievements are last year's Cy Young Award and 2010 league leader in ERA. He has also pitched an immaculate inning, where the pitcher strikes out the side on 9 pitches - he is only the 13th pitcher to accomplish that feat. He also has managed to strike out 4 batters in one inning - an incredibly rare feat that requires a hitter to reach base following a strike out on a wild pitch.

I pointed out a lot of Hernandez's amazing accomplishments in a post near the end of last MLB season.

At just 24 years old, he is among baseball's most dominant starting pitchers, and along with guys like Tim Lincecum, David Price and Stephen Strasburg will be ushering in the new era of the pitcher as baseball continues to distance itself from the era of steroids and behemoths with size 9 hats that made bats look like toothpicks. Were Hernandez on a really good team he could be a threat for 300 wins, something that baseball may not see again for a long while due to a number of factors. Unfortunately, he's wasted a few too many good seasons with the Mariners and will need to start averaging 20 wins a year right now and do it for a long time to have a good shot. Not likely. Mariners fans are hoping they can somehow put some semblance of a decent team around him before he bolts for a major market contender, or they're forced to trade him. But baseball fans will just be happy to enjoy his dominance, wherever it may happen.

MLB Previews: Seattle Mariners

Offense:
1. RF - Ichiro Suzuki
2. 3B - Chone Figgins
3. CF - Franklin Gutierrez
4. DH - Jack Cust/Milton Bradley
5. 1B - Justin Smoak
6. C - Miguel Olivo
7. LF - Michael Saunders/Milton Bradley
8. 2B - Brendan Ryan
9. SS - Jack Wilson

Obviously this is atrocious, but the good news is that this offense can't get any worse. Last year they finished last in the majors in runs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, batting average, on base percentage, and slugging. But there is hope, Chone Figgins has to play better then he did last when he batted .259, Justin Smoak will play better with a full year, and don't get used to Brendan Ryan and Jack Wilson at the end of the line up as minor league superstar Dustin Ackley will be playing 2nd and Nick Franklin will both be finishing the year as the starting 2nd and ss by the end of the year.

Pitching:
1. Felix Hernandez
2. Jason Vargas
3. Doug Fister
4. Erik Bedard
5. Luke French
CL: David Aardisma

There pitching staff is this as of right now but expect Michael Pineda to start the season as the 5th or come into the season as the 5th. Obviously Felix Hernandez is great, he's the best pitcher in baseball and the reigning Cy Young winner (should be 2 time Cy Young winner if you ask me, Fuck Grienke) Jason Vargas and Doug Fister are both serviceable guys with era's under 4.2. Erik Bedard is a giant question mark and is do for another let down season and I'm waiting for Aardisma to suck.

Overall:
I like the future of Seattle and I do think they improve somewhat this year but I don't see them being able to turn it completely around. But Felix walks away with the Cy Young again.

70-92

Chone Figgins To A's?

"The A’s are trying to acquire Chone Figgins for Kevin Kouzmanoff and perhaps a pitcher, according to Joe Stiglich of the Contra Costa Times. Figgins, 33, could play third base for the A's, who missed out on free agent Adrian Beltre (MLBTradeRumors)."

Kind of interesting. It was only a year ago that Figgins was a coveted free agent after leading the league with 101 walks in 2009, stealing 42 bases and posting a .298/.395/.393 for the Angels. Yet, he fell back to Earth after signing with the Mariners (who doesn't?). His batting average went down to .259, and he walked about 30 less times (he did steal the same about of bases though). A lot of this could be due to the talent around him. Lets be honest Seattle is not exactly known for their offense. Then again, neither are the A's.

The Mariners owe Figgins $26MM through 2013 and the infielder's contract includes a vesting option for 2014, so I am a bit surprised the A's would wan to take that on. Maybe they wan Seattle to pick up some of that deal, but the A's were offering Beltre some serious cash, so maybe they got money to burn.

I have never been a Figgins fan. It could be because I hate his first name, but I also just never thought he was as good as everyone made him out to be. Plus he is now 33 years old, and so much of his game is based on speed, so I wonder how much longer he'll be good.

Figgins Going Back To Angels?

That is the rumor that rolling around today. Figgins has been somewhat of a letdown for Seattle, but he was a hell of a player for the Angels, so maybe this would be a good fit. The Mariners are obviously pretty far off from being a good team, so if they can land more prospects and get rid of the $26 million he is owed over the next three seasons that could let them go out and get some kind of power hitter in the future.

This just makes sense on so many levels. Top Seattle prospect Dustin Ackley could slide into that open spot. On top of that the Angels really wanted Crawford, but Figgins could fill that gap (at least for base stealing). Anyways, there is nothing officially, but this has to be something the Angels are looking at.

Mariners Look To Move David Aardsma

"The Mariners are trying to trade David Aardsma, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. As Rosenthal points out, the reliever will earn a raise from his 2010 salary of $2.75MM when he and the Mariners determine his upcoming salary through the arbitration process (MLBTradeRumors)."

The reason I bring this up is because the Red Sox have lost out on a number of relievers, and Aardsma could be a nice pickup. Word is Seattle doesn't want to pay that $2.75 million contract for next year, so Boston may be able to pick him up cheap. Then again, with the size of the contracts a lot of their relievers are getting (Jesse Crain and Matt Guerrier) Seattle may raise the price.

Aardsma has been on the Sox before, and he wasn't anything special then, but he is coming 2 very solid year. In 2009 he had 38 saves, 80 K's in 71.1 innings pitched with a 2.52 ERA, and then last year he had 31 saves, 49 Ks in 49.1 innings with a 3.44 ERA. He isn't the greatest, but he could be a nice addition to the bullpen.

Other guys the Red Sox are looking at are Kevin Gregg, Brian Fuentes, and Dan Wheeler (really want him on the Sox).

King Felix Wins Cy Young

Felix Hernandez may have only won 13 games, but hell, he deserves the Cy Young. The 13 wins by Hernandez marked the fewest for a Cy Young starter in a full season, Tim Lincecum set the record last year with 15 victories for the San Francisco Giants.

"The Seattle Mariners ace earned the AL Cy Young Award on Thursday despite a modest 13-12 record. His major league-leading 2.27 ERA and superior stats put him far ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays' David Price and the New York Yankees' CC Sabathia and their impressive win-loss numbers."ESPN

Felix Hernandez is the only player I like better than Dice K, so I'm alright with him winning it as I assume they are best friends in real life. I would sell my soul to the devil to have Felix on the Red Sox, I would trade every prospect the Red Sox have in order to get him.

But the voters got it right, they looked at the numbers instead of a win/loss record and determined that Felix has better numbers then any pitcher out their. He has had bad luck in Seattle where they can't score runs. But the thing that puts him over the top is how he constantly out dueled CC and the Yankees, the Red Sox and other playoff teams.

Felix is the best pitcher in baseball and it's good to see he gets something for it.

Ichiro Makes History

Ichiro Suzuki did something no players has ever done. In the 5th inning of Seattle's 1-0 loss to Toronto, Ichiro hit a single to center. It was his 200th hit of the season. That makes 10 straight years that Ichiro's recorded 200 hits. Nobody's ever done that. Pete Rose had 10 seasons with 200 hits, but not in a row. Ty Cobb had nine 200 hit seasons.

For my money, Ichiro's a Hall of Famer. Not only does he have this record, but he's a 10 time All-Star, won the MVP in '01, along with Rookie of the Year. 9 Gold Gloves, 3 Silver Sluggers, a .331 career average, .376 OBP, and 382 stolen bases.

He's got more than 2,200 hits right now. He's 36, so probably has 4 good years left in him. He has a decent chance to reach 3,000 hits. That's impressive considering he didn't play ball in this country until he was 27.

Imagine if he started playing here when he was 22, though. He might be at 3,200 hits instead of 2,200. And we might be saying he had a shot at 4,256 hits (Rose's record).

5 Red Sox, 1 Mariners

123456789RHE
BOS0001012105100
SEA100000000161

W: C. Buchholz (16-7)

L: D. Pauley (2-8)

Well there is no quit in these Red Sox and Clay Buchholz who have been playing extremely well recently. Too bad we are still 6.5 games out of the final playoff spot.

Clay Buchholz was able to right the ship from his recent struggles and only allowed one run (Russell Branyan's first-inning homer) and four hits over seven innings in his first victory since Aug. 22. The All-Star right-hander was 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in his previous three starts.

Adrian Beltre hit his 28th one knee homer in the 6th with 2 outs, for the Sox to grab the lead which ultimately led to the win. It's too bad Adrian Beltre is going to be gone next year, he had such a good year some team is going to throw an outrageous amount at him, which he would be stupid not to take.

It was also good to see that our triple A team is better than the Mariners MLB team.

Scoring Summary

BOSSEA
1stR Branyan homered to right (392 feet).01
4thA Beltre homered to left (416 feet).11
6thD Nava safe at first on error by second baseman C Figgins, D Ortiz scored.21
