Tigers Cabrera Enters Rehab

"Miguel Cabrera arrived at spring training Thursday for the first time since he was arrested last week on suspicion of drunken driving and promptly apologized as Major League Baseball said he will undergo treatment set up by doctors administered by management and its players' union." ESPN

Baseball is a weird sport where if you can show up and play and be a coke head, booze bag, or anything else it's cool. The only thing we're against is steroids. Miggy says he's entering rehab for his comical DUI arrest a couple weeks ago, but we all know he's not going to quit drinking, he's not going to be a gym rat, and he will be Manny Ramirez esk and rely on his talents to carry him. However, I think he can do it.

The Tigers will have an interesting year, because both the White Sox and the Twins have better teams.

Miguel Cabrera Charged With DUI

"Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has been arrested on drunken driving charges in Florida. The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office said the 27-year-old's car engine was smoking alongside a road late Wednesday when a deputy spotted the vehicle.

According to the arrest report, Cabrera smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and took a swig from a bottle of Scotch in front of a deputy. Police say Cabrera repeatedly refused to cooperate, saying, "Do you know who I am, you don't know anything about my problems (ESPN)."

This is terrible news for the Tigers. Cabrera had seemed to turned the corner after an ugly incident in 2009 got into a fight with his wife while drunk out of his mind just hours before the Tigers blew the division lead to the Twins. Cabrera really seems like he has some mental problems when you read something like this. What "problems" does he think he has? I really have no idea, but he seems like a really unhappy person, and the Tigers are really going to need to keep an eye on what he is doing off the field. I am not sure what will happen because of this. The MLB doesn't really have a "conduct policy", so I would think any suspension would have to come from the team, and I think the Tigers would be foolish not to. You can let actions like this go unpunished, but the main thing is to get this guy some help.

Miguel Cabrera To Red Sox Rumor

"We mentioned earlier this week how Adrian Gonzalez might be one of the trade targets of the Boston Red Sox. While we're talking blockbusters, why not Miguel Cabrera? Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald suggests that the Bosox might ask the Tigers, who are in cost-cutting mode, about a deal for Cabrera. Silverman cites an AL source who says the Tigers would want a young and proven talent such as Jon Lester along with some top prospects in return (ESPN)."

I think this could actually happen, but it will not be for Lester. There is 0 chance of the rest Sox trading Lester, but maybe a deal like Buchholz, Bowden, and Lars Anderson could get it done. The Tigers are having money problems and are even shopping around guys like Granderson, so maybe there is something to this rumor...

Miguel Cabrera Drunk During Game?

"Cabrera's contract makes him the centerpiece of their franchise; he is their best position player. ...On Saturday morning, Cabrera was staggering drunk and taken away from his home by police, and at some point, there presumably was some question about whether his condition would prevent him from playing in the game. Leyland always has the right to say "no comment" on questions about Cabrera, or any issue. But when he suggests that any inquiry about Cabrera's incident and condition are 'gossip,' well, he's dead wrong (Buster Olney)."

WTF? Well this is not good news for Detroit fans, as he is the centerpiece of their franchise. They have already had to deal with his rapid weight gain, which caused him to move from 3rd to 1st. I guess in the end this could be an isolated incident, and the way he played in the 1 game playoff makes you want to forget all these problems.

Police Breakup Fight Between Cabrera and Wife

"Police in suburban Detroit say Miguel Cabrera and his wife got into a fight at their home over the weekend after the Tigers slugger came home drunk around 5 a.m. Birmingham Police Chief Richard Patterson said Monday that Cabrera's wife called 911 at 6 a.m. Saturday, requesting police assistance. Miguel Cabrera opened the door for officers. Patterson says the Cabreras had been fighting and each had marks on their faces as a result. The chief says Rosangel Cabrera asked that her husband leave the house, so officers took him to the police station, where he was picked up by Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski around 7:30 a.m. No charges are pending in the case (Sportsline)."

Doesn't sound like much will come of this, but certainly is not the distraction you want going into a 1 game playoff with the Twins. For the Tigers sake you hope that he can leave his off the field problems at home and focus on making the postseason.

Rumor: Cabrera to Red Sox

Many people have mixed feelings on Peter Gammons, but I think he is awesome. Today I got a phone call from DP (who is traveling), and he said he was watchign ESPN, and Gammons was running his mouth about how Miguel Cabrera could be on the Red Sox by the trading deadline. Apperently things are so bad in Detriot that they are going to have to do a fire sale to get rid of salary. No better place to start then with your biggest contract. This actually kind of makes sense when you sit back and think about it. If Detroit really does need to cut payroll, then the best thing they can do is stockpile young talent. If that is the case they are going to be looking for teams with great farm systems. In my eyes that would be teams like Sox, Rays, Baltimore, Texas, ect.

From a Sox perspective it makes great sense. They can pay that kind of contract. They have a shitload of young arms that can afford to deal. They need a replacement from Manny (and maybe even Ortiz/Lowell), and they have a guy at first that can easily move to 3rd.

The young pitchers that the Tigers would be targeting would be Buccholz, Masterson, Bowden, Bard (probably in that exact order). Boston would most likely have to give up two, and a young hitter. So a deal could look like Buccholz, Bowden, and Reddick.

Anyways, I don't know how true all this is, but it is fun to think about the Sox lineup with a guy like Cabrera in it...
