Athlete's Really Need To Get Off Twitter

Our latest victim is Oklahoma's sophomore wide receiver Jaz Reynolds who has been suspended indefinitely about joking about a tragedy that recently happened at UT. Anyways, here is what he said:
“Hey everyone in Austin, tx…….kill yourself #evillaugh.”

and then it changed too

“Everyone in austin, tx disregard that last tweet….y’all will mess around n do it lmao.”

Bob Stoops released this shortly after:
“Because of his insensitive remarks on Twitter relative to Tuesday’s tragedy in Austin, we have suspended Jaz Reynolds from our team indefinitely. Our rivalry with Texas will not come at the expense of dignity and respect. We have great concern for what happened in Austin and I am incredibly disappointed that someone connected with our team would react so callously. We have taken immediate action and I hope by doing so have illustrated how seriously we view this matter.”

Yes, I agree he should be suspended about publicly making fun of a tragedy on twitter. But America needs to stop being so uptight about stuff like this. People who play at Oklahoma hate UT and vice versa, so they need to let this go. I mean when Corey Lidle drove his plane into a building all Red Sox fans had a silent chuckle about it. Shit happens, tell this kid to do a public apology and move on, no need to suspend him indefinitely.

Big XII Football Preview

The Big XII remains at 12 teams in 2010. Nebraska will join the BigTen in 2011, and Colorado will join the Pac-10 in 2012. The offseason nearly saw the death of this central states Conference, as Texas and Oklahoma were courted by the SEC and Pac-10. But now it's football time again. And the traditional powerhouses will reign supreme in the conference, which has definitive upper, middle, and lower classes of teams. There are three Big XII teams ranked in the pre-season top 10, but the 4th highest ranked team is 37th nationally.

1. OKLAHOMA SOONERS

Texas is the popular pick to win the Big XII South, and then likely the Big XII title. But Oklahoma is looking good this year. Sophomore QB Landry Jones threw for 3,198 yards last season, with 26 TDs and 14 INTs. If he can stay healthy, he'll improve on that. RB DeMarco Murray also returns, although there's little depth at receiver. Only 5 defensive starters return, but Oklahoma's done a good job of reloading with talented players. The Big XII South winner will be determined in the Red River Shootout, with OU victorious.

Prediction: 11-2, Big XII South Champs, Big XII Champs

Key Games:
9/11 vs. Florida State
9/25 @ Cincinnati
10/2 vs. Texas (in Dallas)
10/23 @ Missouri
11/27 @ Oklahoma State

2. TEXAS LONGHORNS
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
No more Colt McCoy in Austin. Garrett Gilbert is the heir apparent, and was baptized by fire against Bama in the title game. So when the Horns start off at Rice, it should seem like a pee wee game for Gilbert. That being said, UT only returns 4 offensive starters, and they'll likely simplify their schemes, going with hard runs and a back-to-basics passing attack. They'll rely on their defense, which returns 6 starters, mostly in an excellent secondary, which is a must have in the Big XII. They'll excel, but lose to OU in the RRS. They'll likely still make a BCS Bowl.

Prediction: 11-1, 2nd in Big XII South

Key Games:
10/2 vs. Oklahoma (in Dallas)
10/16 @ Nebraska
11/13 vs. Oklahoma State
11/25 vs. Texas A&M

3. NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS

The Blackshirts are back. NU will return with a mostly intact offense, with some talent at the skill positions. However, that unit needs to improve their execution as the Huskers were 75th in scoring offense last year, and 99th in yardage. The defense lost Suh, but they're still deep and ferocious, especially up front. In a Conference loaded with powerful offenses, a shutdown defense can separate a team from the pack. Nebraska held 7 opponents to single digits last year. That's half of their games. They also have something every defensively minded team needs: an excellent, reliable, and accurate kicker. An easy non-conference schedule also helps.

Prediction: 11-2, Big XII North Champs

Key Games:
10/16 vs. Texas
10/30 vs. Missouri

4. MISSOURI TIGERS

Mizzou is a good darkhorse candidate in the Big XII North. Big Blaine Gibbert returns after a 3,593 yard, 24 TD, 9 INT season that saw him complete 59% of his passes. 4/5 of the offensive line also returns. However the Tigers need to fill some holes at WR. The defense isn't bad either. DE Aldon Smith tallied 11.5 sacks as a freshman. Although their depth on the line is worrisome. They're deep at linebacker, but have some forgettable DBs. A soft schedule to start their season will help them tie up all their loose ends.

Prediction: 10-2, 2nd in Big XII North

Key Games:
10/23 vs. Oklahoma
10/30 @ Nebraska

The remainder of the teams are listed alphabetically...

BAYLOR BEARS

QB Robert Griffin returns from an ACL injury. He amassed 2,934 total yards in '08, along with 28 TDs. The offense should be solid, but the defense will be dreadful. The Bears allowed 405.6 yards a game last year. Part of that is from playing in the Big XII, but most of it is because that unit is simply awful. They'll benefit from a soft schedule with games against Sam Houston State, Buffalo, and Rice, but they still won't attain bowl eligibility.

Prediction: 4-8

COLORADO BUFFALOES

I don't know if the Big XII will be happy to lose CU or not. On one hand, they lose a struggling program. On the other hand, they all lose a near guaranteed win. The Buffs have an experienced offense, but it wasn't a very good one. They allowed 44 sacks last season. The QB situation is a toss-up, they have no depth at RB, but they do have some good receivers. Their special teams units might be among the worst in the country. Apart from two very good CBs, their defense is air.

Prediction: 2-10

IOWA STATE CYCLONES

ISU is looking to build on a surprisingly good 7-6 season last year. They return 8 offensive starters, including RB Alexander Robson, who compiled 1,456 yards from scrimmage in '09. They're also very deep at WR. They have an inexperienced defense, but their secondary is very good. A tough schedule will keep them from winning more than 7 games, but they won't be a pushover. They have to play at Iowa, at Oklahoma, at Texas, and also host Nebraska.

Prediction: 6-6

KANSAS JAYHAWKS

The departure of QB Todd Reesing has left a vacuum at the position. There'll be a competition for the spot with no clear favorite going into the season. The Jayhawks have astounding depth at CB (8 players vying for 2 spots), some good defensive ends, but they're weak at linebacker. Their offense is poor, and their O-line is supbar. They ended 2009 with 7 straight losses, and they won't improve much in 2010.

Prediction: 6-6

KANSAS STATE WILDCATS

RB Daniel Thomas ran for 1,265 yards and 11 scores last year. He'll spearhead an offense that boasts 4 returning O-line starters. The passing game, however, is a big question mark. K-State also lost some key playmakers on defense. They have a pair of excellent safeties that will need to carry the D.

Prediction: 5-7

OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS

RB Kendall Hunter returns to Stillwater after missing 2010 due to injury. He ran for 1,553 yards and 16 TDs in '08. The Cowboys have an inexperienced O-line, only returning 1 starter. They were 31st in scoring defense last season, but only bring back 3 from that unit. This will be a rebuilding year for OSU, and the potent offenses of the Big XII will exploit that.

Prediction: 8-4

TEXAS A&M AGGIES

A&M is once again relevant. They feature an explosive and highly skilled offense. They were 5th in the country in yards and 19th in scoring last year. Although their O-line lost 3 starters. Their defense, however, is atrocious. They return 10 starters on D, so they'll likely be better. They were 105th in scoring defense, 90th against the run, 106th against the pass, 105th in total yards. They yielded 49 points to Texas, and 65 to OU.

Prediction: 8-4

TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS

The Red Raiders are a typical Big XII team. They're very talented and very deep on offense, with excellent skill position players. But their defense is susceptible. TTU was already weak on defense last year, and now they need to reload again, especially up front. They'll score points, but they'll get scored on by the big boys of the Conference.

Prediction: 8-4

Big Day in NCAAB

Both Kentucky and Kansas fell for the second time today. The Jayhawks were upset by Oklahoma State, which should crank up URI's win over the Cowboys a bit more, even though it was early in the season. (More on that in a minute.) Personally, I've been rooting for OSU all year so that win holds up. Kentucky went down at the hands of Bruce Pearl's Tennessee Vols and that awful orange jacket he wears.

Sherron Collins poured in 22 for the Jayhawks, but also turned the ball over a season-high six times. 101 of the Jayhawks previous 102 opponents had been held under 50%, but the Cowboys shot over 60%! James Anderson, who leads the conference in scoring dropped 27 to lead the Cowboys to victory.

As for Kentucky, they were trailing much of the game by a fairly wide margin, and managed to cut the deficit from 19 to tie it up late in the game. Kentucky was an ice-cold 2-22 from three. Wall had 19 and Cousins chipped in 15, but it wasn't enough. What looked like a snoozer of a game to begin with, turned into the game of the week as Tennessee turned it up late behind J.P. Prince who got 6 of his 20 in the final 90 seconds of the game.

In all likely hood, these two will still be #1 seeds barring any further slip-ups the rest of the way. I think Kansas will be the consensus #1 heading into the tourney, and Kentucky should be a #1 as well. These two teams are stacked, although Kentucky is very young. Kansas on the other hand has some championship pedigree and should be a good bet to get back to the Final Four.

Rhode Island fuckin' choked and lost to a bad 13-14 St Bonaventure on the road. Jim Baron really needs to lose his job. I don't know if the team quits on him, he is incapable of making adjustments or a combination of both, but it is ridiculous. And I think most Rhode Islanders are pretty sick of watching the rerun every year. Things are looking up for ASU and Cal who should be fighting for a 2nd PAC-10 spot as some of these A-10 teams stumble.

Texas A&M put a thumping on Texas. The Longhorns seem to be falling apart at the seams in typical Rick Barnes fashion, except usually he drags everyone along to the 2nd rd. This year it would seem they are getting an early start on the disappointment.

It's almost March, baby! And things are getting interesting!

Texas - Alabama Breakdown

Why Alabama Wins:
Alabama has a very good formula to win, they have the Heisman winner for a runningback in Mark Ingram, and their backup Trent Richardson is better than any runningback on the Longhorns roster. Bama also has a qb who manages and very rarely makes mistakes in Greg McElroy. He threw for 2450 yards with 17 touchdowns and 4 picks. He manages the game as well as anyone and has weapons when he needs them. Julio Jones is already an excellent NFL prospect and Marquis Maze is no slouch either. I haven't even started with that Alabama defense either Mount Cody aka Terrence Cody is a ridiculous nose tackle, along with the best LB in football in Renaldo McClain. McClains speed was able to shut down Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor and Florida's Tim Tebow. And Javier Arenas is the best defensive back on this field. Oh yea, and the best coach in college football.

Texas Wins if..
Colt McCoy throws for 1000000 yards and Jordan Shipley runs every kick back for a TD. Texas has zero shot of winning this game and Colt McCoy is not Vince Young and Vince Young is not walking into that locker room.

I don't know how it is a 4 point spread.

Bama 35-21

College Bowl Picks/Previews: Part IX

We come to the end of the season, the National Title Game.

Thursday 1/7 - 8:00PM - ABC
BCS National Championship Game - Pasadena, CA
#2 Texas Longhorns vs. #1 Alabama Crimson Tide
The last time the title was decided at the Rose Bowl, it was a #2 Texas team that won it all over an undefeated team that boasted the Heisman Winner. Will history repeat itself?

Alabama has a running game and a stout defense. Texas has Colt McCoy and is solid all around. This should be a tight, field-position kind of football game. And both teams have excelled at extracting wins out of these kinds of close contests.

Alabama beat #11 Virginia Tech to start the season, they beat #12 LSU, and they crushed #5 Florida. They've been in big games against tough opponents, and they've found ways to win. Mark Ingram amassed 150 yards against Va-Tech, 144 against LSU, and 113 against Florida. He's a big-stage back.

Texas' schedule was much easier. They beat #19 Oklahoma State, and #22 Nebraska. But neither of those games were in Austin. Nobody in the Big XII came close to matching Texas. And if it weren't for their preseason ranking of 2, there would've been more controversy about their selection into this game.

But why were they ranked 2nd back in August? It was because they returned most of their team from the year before, a team that went 12-1. This is a talented bunch, and more importantly, a focused group of players. Mack Brown has these guys in-line and all striving for the same thing.

Then there's the X-factor: the venue. The 93,000 fans that fill the Rose Bowl will probably be an even split of burnt orange and crimson & cream. But this is familiar territory for Texas. The Longhorns are the only team besides USC to win the Rose Bowl since 2003. They've won there twice. And while no current Texas players were there, plenty of coaches and other personnel were, and this familiarity can help breed a sense of comfort, and even confidence.

I think Alabama struggles to score on Texas' defense. I think the Longhorns take a slim lead, Bama makes a few mistakes, and the Longhorns pull away. The Tide will make a comeback bid, make things close, but run out of time.

Texas 27, Alabama 24

Kiper Says Colt McCoy is 2nd Round Pick

There has been a lot of backlash against Kiper today for saying McCoy is probably a 2nd round pick in the next NFL Draft. I would love to join the bandwagon and say that he is fucking insane, but I can't McCoy has regressed this year, and even though I chalk some of that up to the changing of personnel, you still can't say he is nearly as good as he was last year. Don't get me wrong I think McCoy is going to have a bright future in the NFL, but with all the talent that will be coming out in this years draft (which I think could be the best in a long time) he could fall to an early 2nd round pick.

24 Texas, 21 Ohio State

In what actually turned out to be a really great game, the Texas Longhorns kept the Ohio State Buckeyes hopes alive until 16 seconds. Colt McCoy threw for a ridiculous 414 yards with 2 TDs in the air, and one on the ground. Ohio State's defense held Texas' run game in check for the whole game making the Texas offense one dimensional and at times that really ended up biting them in the ass. Ohio State was able to cause a crushing redzone interception interception in the second quarter destroying all of Texas' momentum.
Even with Ohio State down big going into the third quarter, they did something very unTressle like things in big games... they kept their composure. One of the best plays Ohio State made is when they needed a crucial TD, they put Todd Boekman in at QB, and they had freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor run a fade route for a score. But the play of the game has to be given to sensational QB Colt McCoy and Quan Cosby (who had 14 catches for 171 yards and 2 scores) who with time running out ran a simple pass play that won them the game. Tressel probably called the worst defense possible or someone really blew their coverage because a safety should have been there, but there wasn't and Cosby scampered into the endzone easily to win the game.

Your Yearly Ohio State Choke Job

If Texas and Colt McCoy don't win this game I will be shocked. Ohio State has been leaning on Terrelle Pryor and Beanie Wells too much all year and Mack Brown will expose that easily. Colt McCoy has a lot more options than Pryor and if McCoy doesn't beat them, Texas RB Chris Ogbonnaya will. This Texas team is explosive and has been screwed all year while Ohio State only made this game because the Big Ten sucks.

Texas 42-21

Red River Rivalry Just Got More Interesting

The fight was over Jamarkus McFarland, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle from Lufkin High School who is considered the state’s best defensive prospect this year and one of the nation’s most promising players. He is also a top student and the president of his class. NY Times

It looks like Oklahoma bested Texas again by getting another stud recruit. Jemarkus McFarland is a beast of a human being and will sure up that sometimes questioned Oklahoma defensive line. As for Texas, it hurts to lose out on this once in a decade talent, but it hurts even more after he goes to your rival.

The Return Of The Great White Hype

"Texas wide receiver Jordan Shipley will return for his senior season in 2009 after the NCAA granted the school's hardship request for a sixth season of eligibility Monday.
Shipley missed the entire 2004 and 2005 seasons because of knee and hamstring injuries. But he regained his health, and he produced a career-best 79 receptions for 982 yards and 11 touchdowns this season to earn third-team All-America honors from The Associated Press."ESPN

I wouldn't care about this story other than Jordan Shipley is a white wide reciever and thus making him great. In a lot of ways he reminds me of every great white wide reciever, he's a possession guy, he's really fast, and catches a lot of balls. With McCoy coming back look for him to have a monster year.

Colt McCoy To Come Back For Senior Year

"Texas Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy will return for his senior season, the Austin American-Statesman reported Monday on its Web site. "I'm not going anywhere," McCoy told the newspaper (ESPN)."

I don't know if this is a good move or not, but I do believe he will be a better NFL QB then Tim Tebow. I believe he has a better arm, and is much more accurate. I can really see Tebow getting seriously hurt at the next level. I hate Texas, but I have very high expectations of McCoy at the next level. I guess we will have to wait another year to see if I am right, but I could see McCoy being one of the better QBs in the NFL in as couple of years.

Gig Em

Bold prediction: Texas A&M beats Texas 28-24 tomorrow night. The game may be in Austin, but Colt McCoy is 0-2 in his career against the Aggies with 1 TD and 4 INTs.

And I'm not just being a blind Sooner fan, cuz I have a feeling Oklahoma State will beat Oklahoma.

BCS Mess Waiting to Happen

2004 was perhaps the worst year for the BCS system. Oklahoma, USC, and Auburn all went undefeated. Utah also didn't lose a game. Oklahoma and USC were chosen for the title game. But Auburn won the Sugar Bowl, and Utah won the Fiesta Bowl.

A similar situation is creeping closer and closer this season. Texas and Alabama have a few tests left, but have gotten past their toughest opponents (Oklahoma and Georgia, respectively). Penn State's remaining schedule has a combined record of 15-10. They also don't have to play in a conference championship game.

Three undefeated BCS conference teams is a very real possibility. But let's say Bama or Texas lose a game. Wouldn't their victories over multiple tough opponents earn them a spot in the title game?

My point is that Texas, Alabama, and Penn State could all finish the season deserving a title shot. Yet the BCS system is so inflexible that it doesn't allow for this to happen.

There could be 4 undefeated non-BCS teams this season. Ball State, Boise State, Tulsa, and Utah can all run the table. None of them will make the national title game. But all any team can do is win all of their games. In no other sport, college or professional, is it possible for there to be an undefeated/untied team that is NOT the champion.

The BCS system is completely worthless. No man, no computer, and no combination of the two can determine the best 2 teams out of 120. Prepare for another bowl season with a somewhat illegitimate national champion, or even co-champions.

College Football Picks

(1) Texas vs (6) Oklahoma State

Last week I went against Texas and they screwed me. So this week I am going to pick them to beat the surprising Oklahoma State Cowboys. Colt McCoy is the best quarterback in the country and his stats are video game like. RB Chris Ogbonnaya not only has an awesome name but will be able to run over this Oklahoma State defense all day. I like Zac Robinson, but sorry you just aren't going to win this game but they keep it somewhat close.

Texas 35-28

(3)Penn State vs (9) Ohio State

Penn State all the way. Penn State has a better offense and a better defense. The big story will be the two QBs, PSU Darrell Clark and OSU Terrelle Pryor. Clark has been the biggest surprise in college football and has been able to run an unbelievable offense. Pryor on the other hand has been able to bring Ohio State back and ranked in the top ten, but he will not be enough to take this game.

Penn State 42-28

(7)Georgia vs (12) LSU

LSU needs to win this game and they know it. After getting embarrassed by Florida they need to win out and that starts with Georgia. It is at Tiger stadium and that will mean all the fans will be in their corner. Jarrett Lee has had an up and down season and will have to straighten out to beat a tough Georgia defense. I am not worried about LSU's defense stopping Knowshon Moreno even though he is averaging over 100 yards a game. Georgia's offensive line is their biggest weakness and look for LSU to take advantage of that.
LSU 21 to 10

(7)Texas Tech vs (23) Kansas

Tech easily. I hate Kansas and I don't think they should do well in football and for that reason alone I am picking Tech big.

Tech 42 to 7

College Football Picks

(10)Georgia vs (22) Vanderbilt

Georgia is a better team and I hate Vandy. Moreno and Stafford are due for a big game and Georgia needs to win this game if they ever want to be talked in National Title talks again. Their defense is good enough to stop the Vandy rushing attack. Watch for AJ Green to have a huge game.

Georgia 35-10
(1) Texas vs (11) Missouri

After a huge loss against Oklahoma State, Mizzou is going to pissed and the Video game offense is going to knock out the number 1 team in the country again. Colt McCoy is going to be able to throw all over Mizzou's secondary, however this is going to be a game of points.

Mizzou 42-35
(20) Michigan State vs (12) Ohio State

This game should be focused on two players Michigan States Javon Ringer and Ohio States Terrell Pryor. Unfortunately for Ohio State, I am really high on Michigan State and Ringer so they are going to win a tough fought battle.

Mich State 21-14
(4) Oklahoma vs (16) Kansas

Sam Bradford and Oklahoma are going to come into this game pissed and believe it carries into the game. Even though Oklahoma's secondary is sometimes suspect, I believe the will keep Kansas' Todd Reesing in check.

Oklahoma 35-10

85 Memphis, 67 Texas

Well in the fuck Dave Pearce NCAA Tournament, the Memphis Tigers beat the Texas Longhorns. Looking back on this tourney I should have just picked all the number 1s. I should have said fuck "free-throws", Memphis is just a really good team. Derrick Rose looked like Jalen Rose in having 21 points and Chris Douglas-Roberts finished with 25 points and was the real game changer. The most surprising stat was the fact they shot 30-36 from the charity stripe (that's a free throw line Bob) which is 83 percent, and that is very impressive. As for Joey Dorsey he had 11 points and 12 boards, however he remains a total douche bag.

As for Texas, the couldn't get it going. D.J. Augustine had 16 points but only shot 4-18 and at times looked foolish with the ball, and A.J. Abrams had 17 points. The Longhorns shot 36 percent for the game, while Memphis shot 50 percent.

Box Score
