Glavine Might Retire

"Tom Glavine may retire if his sore left shoulder doesn't improve in two weeks. Glavine was told Tuesday he must rest for at least two weeks after inflammation was found in his left rotator cuff. The 43-year-old had an MRI and was examined by Dr. James Andrews, who advised treatment and rest. Glavine said he's tired of rehabbing after elbow and shoulder surgery last August. He's willing to give the shoulder two weeks, but not much longer. "I'm willing to put in a little more time but I'm not willing to put in another six weeks or eight weeks because by then, you know what, I'm going to have to start all over again and I'm not interested in doing that," he said (ESPN)."

Sounds to me like Glavine is going to call it a career. He 43 years old now, and I don't blame him for being worn out. He has had a hell of a career, and is a Hall of Famer. In a time of steroids, and hard throwing pitchers, Glavine was more like Maddux in he had pinpoint control, and really just outsmarted a lot of hitter. I have the utmost respect for Glavine and his career, and if he is ready to then the Billerica native should start his acceptance speech...which should include a Dueling Couches shout-out.

Tom Glavine Coming Back

"Tom Glavine has returned to the Atlanta Braves, completing a $1 million, one-year contract that includes another $3.5 million in possible bonuses based on roster time (Sportsline)."

I guess something finally did go right for the Braves this offseasn, as Tom Glavine will return to them at the age of 43. Usually with guys Glavine's age I say that they should retire, but I always had a lot of respect for Glavine and I am glad he is going to be around for 1 more year. Hopefully he will be able to have a solid season, and the key can kind of be a victory lap through the NL. The other side is he could get crushed, but I think the Braves are going to suck this year, so it won't matter anyways.

Glavine Done For Season

The Braves have shut down Tom Glavine for the year, and he may need major elbow surgery. It is looking more and more likely that we have seen the last pitch that Glavine will throw in his career. Even without the elbow injury, it wasn't like he was playing well (2-4 with a 5.54 ERA), and he is 42 years old. No matter what happens I have nothing but respect for this guy, because it was never like he had unhittable stuff, he was just a true pitcher that had to hit his spots (much like former teammate Greg Maddux). Glavine is a first ballot Hall of Famer with his 305 victories, and was part of the "chicks dig the long ball commercial".
