I'm Digging This Reggie Jackson Fellow

ESPN and SI are saying that the Celtics are targeting Boston College shooting guard Reggie Jackson. This is what ESPN says:
"Ironically, in a small way, Boston College's best scorer has a better upside as a defender in the NBA. On offense, quickness is the ultimate weapon, as it allows for the ability to get by people or draw a foul call, thanks to the more stringent way NBA games are called now when a player's progress is impeded by a defender.

But on defense, that weapon is length (not height). I don't focus on wingspan as much as sleeve length, and Jackson appears to have the kind of arms that will require a tailor for all his shirts and suits going forward. Length makes a difference as an on-ball defender, allowing for more space to be provided the ball handler while still being able to influence a dribble, pass or shot. This gives the defender more "reward" plays with less "risk," which is always a good formula. Long arms will help Jackson deny his man better, as well as make plays as a helper. He has not shown any great ability to be a chaos creator while at BC, though that could easily be due to strategic decisions made by the staff, or because Jackson needed to save some energy for his offense. But until he commits to being a difference-maker on defense, he's just a "potential" guy on that side of the court."

So let me get this straight hes a combo guard that can play right away, can score in bunches and has a high ceiling in defense. Somebody throw this kid a Celtics jersey right now! I know a lot of people will think the Celtics are dumb for not drafting a big man, but I think it's smarter to get a scorer late in the first round rather than a big with "potential" like Jeremy Tyler, that kid from Ohio State or Lucas Nicoragua. This kid will be great and could plug in there for Ray Allen after next year. I don't know what this would spell for Avery Bradley but whatever, I'm sure we can trade him for some value or polish him off to be a better Tony Allen.

With The 23rd Pick In The NFL Draft The Philadelphia Eagles Select....

DP's Pick:
Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado

I am a big fan of any person named Jimmy Smith, so regardless if he turns out to be a boom or a bust, I will like this pick. Smith has had some incidents in the past but he's on the same par talent wise as anyone not named Patrick Peterson. The Eagles need someone opposite of Asante Samuel and Smith could fit right in there. Again, his name is Jimmy Smith he's going to be good.

BMack's Pick:
Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College

Castonzo is not the best runner blocker, but he is a hell of a pass blocker, and would fit well with the Eagles. He is quick for his size (6'7" 311 lbs). He is also known as a smart kid, which could be good, because Andy Reid like to run a lot of different packages in his offense, which should only expand with Vick getting more time. Plus BS pumps solid offensive lineman seemingly every year.

Boston College Is Horrible.... And Still not Northeastern, MIT, or Harvard

Last night the Boston College proved everyone right... they Suck.

Yale took care of business when they walked into Boston and handled BC 75-67. The Bulldogs shot seven of 11 from beyond the arc in the first half. Five of those came from Austin Morgan who finished the half with 16 points. Mr. November Reggie Jackson scored 14 first half points for the Eagles.

The Bulldogs came out on an 18-7 tear to start the second half. Reggie Willhite started the run with two jump shots. Morgan and forward Greg Mangano all hit threes to give Yale a 48-32 lead with 14:37 remaining, Yale's largest lead of the game.

However, Boston College was not ready to throw in the towel. The Eagles started shrinking the gap by getting to the line and hitting their free throws. They went 22 of 27 from the the line. The Bulldogs’ 16 point advantage was reduced to 7 over an 11 and a half minute span. With 3 minutes to go, the Bulldogs led 67-60.

After that it was a free throw game in which Yale took care of business.

Terrible loss from BC, oh well, I guess they will decide to be fans next year.

Breaking News: Cornell's Steve Donahue Named BC's Basketball Coach

There are reports that BC has just signed Steve Donahue to be the next coach for BC basketball. I have to admit I am surprised they got him, but this is a great move. Donahue has got Cornell into the NCAA tourney each of the past 3 seasons (and the sweet 16 this year). During that time he is 72-21. I know they aren't in a big time conference, but that is still damn impressive. Donahue received the Clair Bee Coach of the Year Award for his accomplishments during the 2009-2010 season.

Anyways, I think this is a great signing, but I hate BC, so I hope they lose every game.

BC Fires Al Skinner

Boston College has fired head basketball coach Al Skinner today. A press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. today. There had been rumors last week that Skinner was going after the St. John's job, and that's most likely the reason for the firing. There are already 4 coaches rumored to be taking the BC job (Richmond coach Chris Mooney, Cornell coach Steve Donahue, Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, and Northeastern coach Billy Coen). Out of those 4 Tommy Amaker seems the most likely.

If URI did think about a new coach then you would have to think Skinner would be at the top of the list. I doubt it would happen, but he does have ties there. Still, I think he will go to a bigger program.

Red Sox Spring Training Update

The baseball season has begun. The Red Sox played 2 games yesterday 1 against BC, and the other against Northeastern. I am not going to go into detail about both games, because to be honest a lot of these is nonsense, and no one cares, but I will point out what does matter.

Red Sox 15 Northeastern 0

As we noted last year Casey Kelly has decided to become a full time pitcher, and yesterday we got to see him in a Sox uniform. Kelly pitched 1 scoreless inning retiring the side on 10 pitches (7 strikes, 2 Ks). He finished the rest of his day in the bullpen, but most scouts were impressed by his accuracy, and action on his fastball.

Ortiz looked strong in this game as he hit a deep HR to right field. Hopefully this is a sign that he can start the year a lot stronger then he did last year. Lars Anderson also got himself on the stat sheet with an RBI single. This is a make or break year for him after a terrible 2009 season.

Red Sox 6 BC 1

I was much more interested in the players playing against Northeastern, but this was debut of Jeremy Hermida, Adrian Beltre, Marco Scutaro, and Boof Bonser. Boof and Bowden, and Tazawa all pitched pitched scoreless innings (Tazawa had 2 Ks).

Kalish had a good game goin 1 for 2 with a walk, 2 runs scored and a sacrifice fly. Jose Iglesias ripped a three-run double to left in his first at-bat as a Red Sox to give them a 5-0 lead on the Eagles.

Overall the Sox looked good yesterday. There isn't too much you can learn from these games, but you have to be impressed by Kalish, Kelly, Iglesias, and Tazawa. The Sox have done a good job bring up prospects through their system.

The Sox play tonight, hosting Minnesota.

Cavs 108 Celtics 88

The Celtics were the better team in the first half, but the Cavs just had too much talent on their side, and blew out the Celtics in the 2nd on their way to a 108-88 win. Lebron had 36 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds, and Mo Williams scored 14 of his 19 points in the 4th quarter.

I wouldn't read too much into this loss. The Celtics were playing without arguably their best player (Pierce), and the Cavs could be the best team in the NBA. With that being said, there has been an ominous trend all season that the Celtics play really well in the 1st half only to turn around and fall flat on their faces in the 2nd. Whether it is age, bad coaching, or just a lack of focus the Celtics need to figure this out before the playoffs begin.

Still, you couldn't expect the Celtics to win this game, and there is a silver lining to this game. Shaq injured his thumb and early reports say it could be serious. Obviously this is good news for the Eastern Conference, since the Cavs will be weak up front without him, or at least until they get Big Z back.

Another good sign is that Ray Allen continued his hot streak with 21 points, and Rajon Rondo had another good game putting up 19 points, 11 assists, and 4 boards. I feel like the Celtics as a team are heading in the right direction, but I would really like to see them play some stronger in the 2nd half once Pierce returns.

Remember Ryan Sidney

If you remember in the past of Boston College there was an awesome team in the 90's, and on that team you had Troy Bell and Ryan Sidney leading the Eagles to NCAA appearances. This was probably my favorite college team ever, but then in 1999 Ryan Sidney was dismissed from the team and I never really new why. Well I tracked the former Boston College star down to ask him what happened and some other stuff. Here's the convo:

For most BC fans you kind of disappeared, without not knowing why. So,
What happened at Boston College and why did you leave?

I left because I had just had a son. I had some personal things going on. It was just time for both sides to go their separate ways. If not I believe it wouldn't have been as smooth as a release.

how was your relationship with your teammates at your time at Boston College?

I loved my teammates. My best friends were actually students that I went to school with and some others that I made friendships with over the years.

How was it playing beside Troy Bell?

It was cool. He played the way he played and I played the way I played so it worked out great for both of us. I feel and even his mother will tell you. That I made him better. Its just plain and simple.

How was it playing for Al Skinner?

NOT A BETTER COACH in AMERICA. I mean that he is the BEST PERSON you could play for coming from what I knew and had experienced in life to the point and time I played for him.

In general do you think athletes get more advantages at schools?

Yeah sure they do. But they earn that shit. I mean you go and spend 6 hours a day in a gym. Than have to do a interview and sign autographs and go do charity work. There is a lot that you have to do but most of it you just have to be able to have time to do it. With all that work which really isn't that hard is just sometimes impossible. So the best way to get to be in two places at once is a Tutor. LOVED THEM.

When you were playing did you hate Duke as much as the rest of the country?

NO. Never hated them. They were just a bunch of girl scouts with a name. In most situations they were punked and pushed around., Just after a while the refs realized people didn't care about the name so to they had to protect those fruits for the most part.

Do you hold any grudges towards your former school?

NONE I loved BOSTON COLLEGE. Will always was where I got my start and without that START I wouldn't have all the things I have now.

He was a pretty cool dude and want to thank him for partaking in this. It wasn't the Boston College bashing that I wished, but it's pretty straight forward. He did say this about BC kids though: Yeah a lot of the kids I went to school with had a "SILVER SPOON" for so long that they didn't know no better. Cant blame children for the faults of their parents. Most of them fall on their faces when they get out of that Heaven called BC.

Pretty funny. Anyways, I thought this was good way to kick off the basketball season.

HAHAHA

Boston College running back Josh Haden and quarterback Justin Tuggle are transferring, according to a release issued by the school today. Herald

The only thing is that Josh Haden got this gem tattooed on his chest. That was a pretty wise investment, wouldn't you say? Fuck B.C.

Boston College Adds Another QB

"The wide-open quarterback competition at Boston College has gotten even more interesting. Less than a week after Dominique Davis announced he was transferring on the heels of his suspension for academic reasons, the Eagles received a verbal commitment from another quarterback. He doesn’t come with much college game experience - then again, the current crop of Eagles QBs doesn’t have much, either - but he will arrive at The Heights with a lot more life experience than most new recruits. Dave Shinskie, a 25-year-old former two-sport star at Mount Carmel High (Pa.) who initially chose to pursue baseball, visited Chestnut Hill last week, was offered a scholarship and committed to BC (Boston Herald)."

This kid played six-plus years in the minors, compiling a 24-30 record with a 4.61 ERA while never rising above Double A for the Twins. He has decided to come back to school, and when he saw the open competition at BC he jumped at the opportunity. To be a pitcher (even in the minors) you have to have a hell of an arm, so I am interested to see how this kid will do. Even if he is decent BC is going to have a tough year, and they are kind of in the rebuilding process. Still, it is something to keep an eye on as there are 3-4 QBs that really have a chance to steal the starting QB gig.

Dominique Davis To Transfer Out Of BC

"Boston College quarterback Dominique Davis has decided to transfer after he was suspended by the university for academic reasons, the school announced Tuesday (ESPN)."

With Davis now leaving BC does not have a QB that has thrown a single pass in college. Justin Tuggle (redshirt freshman) and Codi Boek (junior) who transferred last year from American River Junior College after starting his career in 2006 at Idaho State, were competing with Davis for the starting job this spring. Now it looks like BC be starting a kid who played fullback last year (Boek). There is somewhat of a chance that true freshman Michael Marscovetra might take over, but at this point we all know BC will suck next yeat, and it might be a good idea to give this kid a year to develop by redshirting him.

Mark Herzlich Has Cancer

Boston College senior linebacker Mark Herzlich disclosed today that he has been diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a malignant tumor most often found in bone or soft tissue.

The following is a statement from Herzlich:

"This past week, I got some news nobody wants to hear. After undergoing some tests to determine the cause of some pain I had been experiencing in my leg, I learned that I have Ewing's Sarcoma.

"Obviously, I was shocked. I had been extremely focused on preparing for my senior season at Boston College and for life beyond that. Now, I must channel all that energy into facing my toughest opponent yet, and that is exactly what I will do. "

As much as I hate BC I feel terrible for Mark Herzlich. 6-foot-4-inch, 238-pound junior was the ACC defensive player of the year. Herzlich finished last year with 110 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. This is a big blow for BC's defensive line, but we are pulling for you Mark.

Thanks for the ups Jesus

(10) USC 72, (7) BC 55

My Biggest fear for Boston College happened tonight. USC was able to shut down Tyrese Rice and they didn't have enough scoring behind him. USC's Coach Tim Floyd did a genius move in putting 6'6 Marcus Simmons on 6'1 Rese Rice. Rice wasn't able to get around Simmons and couldn't shoot over the top of him. Boston College wasn't able to stop USC's Taj Gibson who went a ridiculous 10 for 10 for 24 points. This game just got silly in the second half as BC just lost its way and USC pulled away. This is probably going to be the last time I ever root for BC, they always pull this shit and I hate them. Michigan State is going to have to watch out for USC, because I have a feeling they are going to have trouble with them.

BC Gets Sean Williams Arrested

"New Jersey Nets forward Sean Williams was arrested at Boston College last weekend for allegedly violating a no-trespassing order. The 22-year-old former BC player was arrested Sunday shortly before the Eagles played Duke, according to a campus police report (ESPN)."

Most reports suggest that he was invited to the game by Al Skinner, but when he got there the Police went after him. Williams got pissed resisted arrest, and when he was finally taken in...

"According to BC police, Williams -- instead of signing his name on a fingerprint card and a trespassing warning -- wrote an expletive on each document (ESPN)."

Which is hilarious. I know Williams was an asshole when he was at BC, so I am really not going to go out of my way to defend him, but I would be fucking pissed if I was invited to a game only to be arrested for trespassing. Part of me blames this on Skinner for not contacting the right people. The other part blames BC for still holding a pot possession offense that happened awhile ago against this guy.

BC Does Something Else Lame

"Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski has been told he will be fired if he interviews for the head coaching vacancy with the New York Jets, which is scheduled for Monday, according to sources." ESPN

Am I the only one that thinks this is extremely lame. Jeff Jagodzinski is trying to further his coaching career and BC says they will fire him if he goes to an interview? That's bullshit, Tom O'Brian left before BC had a bowl game and no one goes after him but if Jagodzinski goes to an interview he gets fired? It doesn't make sense. Jagodzinski has been a great coach this season and to think this team was ranked before the bowl game after star player Matt Ryan, Dejuan Tribble, and Jamie Silva left is pretty remarkable. Boston College needs to realize that their program isn't the same as a prestigious college program and certainly not worth as much as the Jets. To hold this guy hostage at a shitty school is just wrong.

Life After the Sox

The Sox hadn't lost a playoff series since 2005, and hadn't lost a Game 7 since that all too memorable 2003 ALCS in Yankee Stadium. What's worse, the team that ended the Sox season is full of upstarts, and supported by a small rabble of mohawk wearing, cowbell ringing, fair weather fans that make Pink Hats look like the 700 level of Veterans Stadium. A friend of mine going to school in Tampa paid $40 for Game 7 tickets. FORTY DOLLARS... FOR GAME SEVEN! I paid $60 for regular season bleacher tickets up here and bragged about getting a good deal.

It's hard losing that way, to that team, with those "fans." But at least it wasn't the Yankees, like it was in '03. And at least it wasn't the Mets, like it was in '86. And if the Rays are good enough for Jenn Sterger, then I guess they're not so bad.

But like 2003, and like 1986, there are other GREAT teams to watch in this town. The World Champion Celtics start their title defense in less than a week. The Bradyless Pats are still in it, and still very entertaining. The Bruins have done well against some tough opponents to start their season. The BC Eagles are ranked 23rd in the country and could go to the ACC title game.

I'll admit, October of 2008 isn't shaping up to be the same as October of 2007. On Halloween last year, the Red Sox were World Series Champions, the Patriots were 8-0, Boston College was ranked #2 in the country, and the Celtics were about to begin their most highly anticipated season in decades.

But look at what New York has. They've got the Giants, and that's it. The Yankees and Mets missed the playoffs, the Knicks suck, and the Jets are terminal losers.

Look at what Philadelphia has. The Phillies won the pennant, but the Eagles are stuck in a cycle of mediocrity. The 76ers were under .500, and the Flyers are a bunch of cheap shot pussies.

What city is doing much better than Boston? Los Angeles has the Dodgers, Lakers, and USC. They can throw in the Angels, as well. That's good, but not better than what we have.

Both Chicago baseball teams made the playoffs, and the Bears are in first. But the Bulls and Blackhawks both missed the playoffs.

Perhaps Boston sports aren't miles above everyone else anymore, but I can't really think of another town being above us. Boston teams have 6 titles in the 21st century. LA's teams have 4 (that's with 2 baseball teams, 2 hockey teams, and 2 basketball teams). The Spurs have won 3 for San Antonio. Miami has 2, New York (2 baseball, 2 football, 3 hockey) also has 2 titles.

So let's not line up on the Tobin or the Zakim. Let's not start crying because it's been four whole months since a championship parade. Let's be a little happier that we live in a town with the best football and baseball teams in the 21st century, along with the greatest basketball team IN HISTORY.

BC and UConn... Man Up and Play Each Other

One thing that pisses me off about BC's football scheduling is that they don't play UConn. Chestnut Hill is only 80 miles from Storrs. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are 85 miles apart. Michigan and Ohio State are 188 miles apart. Miami and Florida State are nearly 500 miles apart. In college football geography, 80 miles is a stone's throw.

Boston College doesn't have a football rival. Say what you want about Notre Dame, but the Irish don't care. Their rivals are USC, Michigan, and Purdue. The same goes for Miami (actual rivals: Virginia Tech, FSU, Florida), and Virginia Tech (actual rivals: Miami, Virginia).

So, Boston College, UConn, let's make a deal here. Play each other for 6 years and see what develops. Hell, play at Gillette Stadium if you want a neutral location. You can split up the 70,000 seats evenly between schools. BC, you'll get noticed more by the media in Boston. UConn, you'll steal a little attention from your basketball teams. Make up some silly trophy to play for like Paul Revere's Saddle or something. Call it the Blackstone River Shootout brought to you by Carl's Jr.

So instead of playing UMass or URI or Holy Cross or UNH, man up and play each other!

19 Georgia Tech, 16 Boston College

HAHAHAHAHA. Now that I am in New Orleans and in SEC land, I can finally say; FUCK you Boston College, FUCK your rich little faggy students that I hated in high school, FUCK your BMWs/ Lexus/ Mercedes that mommy and daddy bought you, fuck your popped collars, Rolex watches, and stone washed jeans you squares, Fuck your gay alumni, FUCK YOU BC. Enjoy your prestigious shitty bowl winning streak douche bags.

I mean Georgia Tech fumbled the ball 3 times in the first half and you still lost. HAHA

Boston College you are a step down from Duke.

Now DIE.

BC Wins, But a Rough Day for the ACC

Boston College opened their season with a cupcake game on the road. The Golden Flashes of Kent State finished 2007 with seven straight losses. Even with all the talent BC lost from last season, they were more than a match for the Flashes.

The Eagles took a 14-0 lead late in the 1st quarter. In what will be quite different from last year's team, the rushing game led the offense. Five different players combined for 47 carries and 230 yards. Quarterback Chris Cane only threw the ball 18 times, and averaged more yards per carry (6.7) than yards per pass attempt (5.9). Crane also ran for two scores, but didn't throw for one.

BC used junior Jeff Smith, freshman Josh Haden, and sophomore James McCluskey for a bulk of their carries. Smith had 74 yards on 11 carries and a 42 yard TD, Haden had 66 on 15, McCluskey had 36 on 8.

BC was part of a wider trend in the ACC. The ACC teams who faced very weak opposition, cruised to victory. Every ACC team that faced a team with any quality whatsoever, lost.

On Thursday, South Carolina pummeled Tom O'Brien and NC State. Saturday, #17 Virginia Tech fell 27-22 to East Carolina in Charlotte. Ironically, the Hokies were beaten by a blocked punt returned for a score with 1:52 left in the game.

#2 Southern Cal obliterated Virginia 52-7. Few expected the Cavliers would win, but I think most people expected them to put up more of a fight. It wouldv'e been nice if UVA had wiped the grin of this schmuck's face...

#9 Clemson was dominated by #24 Alabama 34-10 in the Georgia Dome. The Tigers wound up with 0 rushing yards (remember, in college ball, sacks count as rushes), and possessed the ball for 18:47. Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide put up 419 yards of offense, including 239 on the ground.

Boston College hosts Georgia Tech next Saturday.
