Pittsburgh Gets 2011 Winter Classic

Heinz Field will host the 2011 Winter Classic, as the 2009 Stanley Cup Champion Penguins will host perennial powerhouse/chokers: the Washington Capitals. That's not surprising, but it does pose a few questions.

Has the NHL beaten the Crosby vs. Ovechkin horse to death? I mean one guy is as boring as wallpaper samples, and the other guy can barely speak English. The NHL has been trying to prop up this "rivalry," but the two teams play in different divisions, and have only played one forgettable postseason series against each other. How can you have a rivalry when you meet each other only 4 times out of 80 each season?

Then there's another question. Why not New York/New Jersey. Why can't the Devils host the Rangers in what would be a media extravaganza? Those teams are rivals, and it'd get as much media attention as anything in Western PA could. Also consider the fact that the Penguins have already played in a Winter Classic (they'd be the first to play in 2) in Buffalo, which was essentially a showcase for Crosby.

I don't have any major beefs with Pittsburgh vs. Washington in Pittsburgh for the 2011 Winter Classic. So long as the Penguins don't play in another Classic for some time.

And if the NHL wants to build rivalries, as they seemingly do with this move, then maybe they should eliminate the purposeless teams like Nashville, Tampa Bay, Florida, Phoenix, Columbus, the Islanders, Nashville.

I Was Right, The Captain and BMack Have AIDs

I don't write much about hockey, but when I do I have never been wrong, not once in my life. I have been a giant advocate of Sidney Crosby over Alex Ovechkin, and Captain and Bmack always would jump up and say no way. They said Ovechkin's better because he scores more, likes to fight, and drives his cars fast and is a badass, however, the faggots forgot to talk about the most important part of the arguement, and that's winning. Badass Ovechkin got knocked out of the playoffs by an 8 seed, and has watched Sid the kid win the Stanley Cup last year and get the gold in the Olympics this past year, and watch his team who is STILL in the playoffs. Crosby wins, Ovechkin fights, and drives cars and that's that. So before BMack and the Captain pretend to be hockey experts, how bout you ask the real genius when it comes to hockey and that's DP.

Ovechkin Suspended 2 Games

"Alex Ovechkin's latest on-ice indiscretion netted him a two-game suspension, a sore right knee and a new level of concern from his coach about his "pretty reckless" ways. The league's reigning two-time MVP was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Tuesday for a knee-to-knee hit on defenseman Tim Gleason in the Washington Capitals' 3-2 win Monday night over the Carolina Hurricanes. Ovechkin's first NHL suspension will cost him $98,844.16 in salary. He'll sit out Thursday against Florida and Saturday at Philadelphia, although his sore knee might have kept him out of one of the games anyway.

"I regret that this has happened," Ovechkin said in a statement released by the team. "I'm glad that Tim wasn't injured because I never ever want to see anyone get hurt (CBSSports)."

The NHL had to do this. Ovechkin got away with one of these hits in the playoffs last year, and if they let him go again there would be hell to pay from other players and fans. Ovechkin plays at such a speed that sometimes I wonder if he means to even do this, but in the end it doesn't matter it is illegal for a reason (ended Neely's career) and everyone has to play by the rules. This won't hurt the Capitals much as he was most likely go to sit out one of these games anyways, and the NHL season (like the NBA) is so damn long...

Ovechkin Injury Update

"The Washington Capitals say Alex Ovechkin is "week-to-week" with an upper-body injury. The Capitals said Monday that the two-time league MVP suffered an "upper-body strain" in Sunday's overtime loss to Columbus. Ovechkin had an MRI and will travel with the team while receiving treatment (Sportsline)."

It is one of the few guys in the NHL that you just really don't want to see go down. He is so fun to watch and really gives the NHL the best opportunity to become a major sport again.

Ovechkin has missed only two games because of injury since coming to the NHL in 2005, and on the year he already has 14 goals. To make sure you know how ridiculous that is think about this...The Bruins top goal scorer has only 4.

Capitals 4 Bruins 1

Well that was a disappointing start to the season. Ovechkin and the Capitals were all over the Bruins from the start of this game. What really killed the Bruins was the play of their defense and special teams. The Capitals got 2 power play goals (both from Brooks Laich), as the Bruins penalty kill looked awful. Boston's defense was beat to the puck constantly in their own end. When there are players like Ovechkin on the ice you can't let that happen and expect to win. Ovechkin ended up with 2 goals and 1 assist, as he looks as good as ever.

Thomas didn't have a bad game. The goals that went in for the most part were impossible to stop. The Bruins overall looked flat, but this is the first game in a 82 to game season, so no need to flip shit.

Top 25 Under 25: #2 Alexander Ovechkin

Born: September 17, 1985

Maybe one of the greatest hockey players I have ever had a chance to watch. Even if you don't like hockey you'll find this guy captivating. Many will argue that Crosby should be above him, which I understand, but I can't do it since Crosby is a whiny bitch, and Ovechkin is the single most exciting player I have ever seen in person (Yes I bet Orr was more exciting).

This guy has been a phenom since he was a kid. People forget he is only 23 years old!!! And yet he has...

-Made the All-Star team every year since 2006
- Won Rookie of the Year 2006
-Player of the Year 2008 and 2009
-Won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy 2008 and 2009
-Art Ross Trophy (2008)
-Kharlamov Trophy 2006-2009
-First player to win the Art Ross Trophy, Maurice Richard Trophy, Lester B. Pearson Award and Hart Memorial Trophy as well as win all four in a single season
-Most goals scored by a left-winger in a season (2007–08) – 65 goals
-Most points scored by a left-wing rookie (2005–06) – 106 points

On top of all that he holds just above every record for the Capitals AT AGE 23!!!! He is simply amazing. What is even cooler is that Crosby and him have been playing against each other since they were kids in the Juniors Championships, and look to be 2 of the best hockey players in the NHL for the next 15 years....

Ovechkin Is A Badass

Alex Ovechkin has been taking a lot of shit for his celebration after scoring his 50th goal of the season. Here is what he had to say to the media...

"It's a big number, I think for everybody. If I get it, why [can't I] celebrate? If you win the lottery -- a million dollars -- you go to the bar and drink a lot," the Washington Capitals star said. "I scored 50 goals and I just celebrated (ESPN)."

Damn right, and he took every question from the media. Listen in almost very sport there is celebrating. God forbid someone in hockey actually acts like a kid who is enjoying himself.

"It's good for the league, it's good for our fans," Ovechkin said. "Some players are just like robots. They score goals and it's like, OK, no emotion, nothing. They basically go, 'OK.' You have to show emotion if you're an emotional guy. Show it. You don't have to think about it if somebody doesn't like it. I don't care about it if somebody [doesn't] like it. I play myself, I enjoy my life, I've enjoyed my whole career. If somebody [doesn't] like it, don't watch my game, don't watch what I'm doing on the ice (ESPN)."

He is 100% right. He is the most exciting player to watch in the NHL. I am glad he is doing this and bringing more attention to the sport. Good for you Ovechkin, you're a badass in my book.

In case you didn't see his celebration here it is...

Ovechkin Scores 50th Goal

If you have never seen Ovechkin play, then you are missing out on one of the most exciting athletes in the world. He does it all, and he is actually fun to watch. He will try behind the back passes, he makes up moves, and on top of all that he actually hits. Some people are pissed because after he scored his 50th goal Ovechkin put his stick on the ice and pretend to warm his hands over it, but to be honest I found it hilarious, and if you put up 50 goals you can do stuff like that. Ovechkin became the first player in Washington's history to score 50 goals in 3 different seasons. Good for you Ovechkin, you are the best player in hockey.
