Rays Beat Sox 2-1

The game came down to the bottom of the 9th. Masterson was on the hill, Barlett hit a single, then Pena walked, which was very questionable since the Sox would have had 2 strikes on him, but a ball came onto the field and time was called (yet no one seemed to know other than the 3rd base umpire). So, there was a man on 1st and 2nd with no out. Masterson was able to get Longoria to strikeout (3rd time today), but Masterson couldn't keep the momentum as he hit Cliff Floyd with a pitch to load the bases. So, with 1 out and bases loaded Dioner Navarro hit a deep fly ball to center field. Ellsbury new it was too deep to have a chance to throw Barlett out at the plate, so he let it go and the Rays beat the Sox 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th. The Sox now are no longer tied for 1st, and can't do any better than tie the Rays when this series is over (since it ends after tomorrow's game). The Rays have to be pumped to get this win, since they are back into 1st, and they end their slide. It was really a wasted effort by the Sox, as Beckett went 8 innings allowing only 1 run on 3 hits with 7 Ks. So, at least it seems like Beckett is ready for the playoff push. The bad news is that Mike Lowell really looked like he is hurt, and I am beginning to question how much longer he is going to be able to play through this injury (torn labrum). Lowell can barley run to first, and after making a bare handed play in the field, he was grimacing, and limping noticeably. As always we will keep you updated on Mike Lowell's status, as more information becomes available.

Rays Beat Sox 5-4

The Sox were down 3-2 with two outs in the eighth until Dan Wheeler walked Kevin Youkilis and then Jason Bay went deep on him to take a 4 to 3 lead. All seemed to be going according to plan until pinch-hitter Dan Johnson homered off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning to tie it, and it only got worse from there as Dioner Navarro doubled in the go ahead run and the Rays beat the Sox 5-4. The Rays now have a 1 1/2 game lead in the AL East.

Dice-K had another one of his aggravating outings as he went 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits with 4 walks while striking out 5. Dice-K just didn't look like himself, and I only say that because he let up so many hits. We all know he doesn't go deep into games, but he usually doesn't let up many hits. I will say that I think he seemed to lose his touch when he took a fall while going after a ground ball. It is not an excuse, but he never really seemed right after that. The bullpen (other than Papelbon) looked fantastic, as they combined for 3 scoreless innings allowing only 1 hit. Papelbon was due for a bad night, and I still think they are using him too much, and I hope he can hold up. Hopefully, after an outing like this, Francona will give him a couple nights off. The Sox wanted to give Ortiz the night off, but he ended up getting two at bats, but went hitless in both. I really don't understand why, if Francona wanted to give him the night off that he would turn around and have him bat twice. Doesn't make sense to me, but what do I know...
