The Rest Of The MLB Free Agents

A lot of guys have been signed, but there are still a bunch of decent players out there. Even though the Red Sox are most likely done there are plenty of teams that could still make a splash. Here is the top 15 free agents according to ESPN...

Top remaining free agents
1. Adrian Beltre, 3B
2. Carl Pavano, RHP
3. Andy Pettitte, LHP
4. Rafael Soriano, RHP
5. Manny Ramirez, LF/DH
7. Brad Penny, RHP
8. Jim Thome, DH
9. Johnny Damon, LF/DH
10. Vladimir Guerrero, DH
11. Derrek Lee, 1B
12. Grant Balfour, RHP
13. Jon Rauch, RHP
14. Brian Fuentes, LHP
15. Nick Johnson, 1B/DH

Tough to figure out where all these guys can land. I think the Twins have a good chance at resigning Thome and Pavano. The only other teams I can see jumping in on Pavano is the Rangers and Nationals, but I think most likely he returns to the Twins. Pettitte is either going to retire or resign with the Yankees, that situation is getting very interesting as Pettitte is starting to get behind on his offseason workouts.

The most interesting is obviously Beltre, who seems to have priced himself right out of a lot of good deals. The Angels and A's have both offered Beltre pretty big contracts, and he has either turned them down or not responded. I still think the Angles are going to end up with him and Rafael Soriano. Going into the offseason they were supposed to have a bunch of money to spend, and I just can't see them going into next season without making some kind of significant signing.

I think the signings are going to start happening very fast. Teams will be heading to camp soon, and people are going to want their rosters in order. There are still a lot of good free agents out there that can have a big impact next season, so it will be very interesting to see how this all shakes out.

Cubs Finalize Carlos Pena Signing

Carlos Pena, reported Carrie Muskat of MLB.com, finalized a one-year deal with the Cubs worth about $10 million. Although it is only a one year deal I believe the Cubs really overpaid. Pena's batting average has been in decline for 3 years now, and last year he finished below .200. Obviously Pena's power is his golden ticket, he hit 46 HRs in 2007, 31 in 2008, 39 in 2009, and 28 last year. You would think in the small park that is Wrigley he should put up some good power numbers, but I have to admit I think this is a bad signing, and I would much rather have a guy like Paul Konerko. Then again, it's just a one year deal, so if it doesn't work out at least it doesn't hurt the Cubs long term.

I really thought Pena would land with the Nationals, since it seemed like a logical fit after the loss of Adam Dunn, but after spending so much on Werth I guess it would be too much to throw money at Pena too.
