MLB Trades That Happened Over The Weekend

Texas Rangers add Mike Adams and Koji Uehara.
The Rangers have a lot of problems when it comes to their bullpen, so adding to of the best set up men certainly helps. Their combined stats are: 95 innings, 51 hits, 111 strikeouts, 17 walks. Also they control them for next year too.

Hunter Pence to Philadelphia Phillies
How do the Phllies constantly make awesome moves. They gave up some pretty good prospects but Pence fills a huge void in a what is a surprisingly bad Phillies line up. Pence will most likely take Raul Ibanez's spot out there, Ibanez is terrible in the field and is batting around .260. I like the deal.

Doug Fister and David Pauley to Detroit Tigers
Another move I'm in favor for, with Brad Penny being awful and the Tigers constantly having to call up some prospect to get rocked every 5th day, this should put a stop to the bleeding. Fister is 3-12, but remember he's on Seattle who is allergic to runs, he also has a 3.33 era and about 90 Ks. David Pauley should fit some of the bullpen void as well.

Ubaldo Jimenez to Cleveland Indians
I like this move for the Indians, a lot of people are saying that they gave up too much by involving top prospect Drew Pomeranz and Alex White, however, Ubaldo is 27, is coming off a 19 win season and flirts with 200 Ks a year. He could be an Ace for Cleveland who need a top of the line rotation guy. They have him for the next 3 years at a relatively cheap price. Like the aggressiveness by Cleveland.

Michael Bourn to Atlanta Braves
Good fit for the Braves who need an OF and need speed. They got both and didn't give up that much.

Blue Jays Turn Around And Trade Napoli To Rangers

"Hopefully Mike Napoli's suitcase is still packed. Just four days after acquiring the catcher/first baseman from the Angels, the Blue Jays have sent him back to the AL West. Napoli is heading to the Rangers for Frank Francisco and cash, the teams announced. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first reported the deal (on Twitter) and Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports (on Twitter) that the Rangers are sending less than $1MM to Toronto (MLBTradeRumors)."

This isn't a deal that will make a lot of headlines, but it is still very interesting. For one, it never made sense that the Blue Jays acquired Napoli in the first place. They have their catcher of the future in J.P. Arencibia, and a veteran in Jose Molina, so the catching duties seem to be covered. On top of that they have somewhat of a log jam at first with Adam Lind and Edwin Encarnacion lobbying for playing time.

What is interesting now is that the Rangers are kind of running into the same problem. Napoli will play some catcher, sharing time with Yorvit Torrealba and Matt Treanor. He could play some first, but Michael Young is rumored to be moving to first base after the signing of Adrian Beltre. On top of that the Rangers have Chris Davis and Mitch Moreland battling for playing time.

This could mean that Rangers plan to trade Michael Young (Colorado has expressed interest). So, keep an eye on the Rangers as they may not be done wheeling and dealing yet.

This also could mean that Neftali Feliz will stay in the bullpen. There had been rumors that the Rangers would stretch him out and try to make him a starter again. I'm almost always against doing that, but after losing Cliff Lee I guess it had to be looked at. With this deal it seems a lot more likely he'll stay in the bullpen.

For the Blue Jays Frank Francisco helps round out a bullpen that already has Jason Frasor, Jon Rauch, and Octavio Dotel. They needed to add some arms back there after losing guys like Scott Downs.

Breaking News: Orioles Land Mark Reynolds

"The Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a deal to obtain slugging third baseman Mark Reynolds from the Arizona Diamondbacks in return for minor league prospects, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

The 27-year-old Reynolds has 121 homers in four major league seasons, all with Arizona. He also has struck out over 200 times each of the past three seasons, including a major league record 223 in 2009 (ESPN)."

Not a bad deal for the Orioles they needed a third baseman and only had to give up relievers David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio. Reynolds is coming off a terrible year in which hit .198/.320/.433 with 32 home runs and 211 strikeouts, but he has shown promise in the past when he hit 44 HRs in 2009 while batting a solid .260. He will never be an on base machine, but he is a great power guy, and totally worth it for what the Orioles gave up.

Zack Greinke Is Maybe On The Block

Zack Greinke's starting to act up for the Royals and who wouldn't with the way that team has performed recently. ESPN has run down a couple of teams who would be a good fit and they are Tampa, Toronto, Baltimore and the Phillies. The Phillies could potentially do this if they give up uber prospect Dominic Brown who is said to be their future in the OF.

If you were the Phillies you would have to do this and put together the best rotation in baseball with Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hammels, Zack Greinke and Joe Blanton and try and re-sign Jayson Werth.

I'm not a huge Greinke guy but he goes to the minors (National League) he could be dirty.

MLB Trade Deadline Wrap Up

AL East

The defending World Champs made as many trades as anyone over the past two days. First they acquired Lance Berkman and cash from the Astros for minor leaguers Mark Melancon and Jimmy Paredes, then they pounced on Austin Kearns at the cost of a player to be named later or cash. Today they added Kerry Wood, sending Cleveland a player to be named later and cash considerations.

The Rays responded by strengthening their bullpen with the acquisition of Chad Qualls, who cost them a player to be named later.

Boston acquired Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the Rangers for minor leaguers Roman Mendez and Chris McGuiness, a player to be named later, and $350,000.

AL Central

The White Sox fortified their rotation by acquiring Edwin Jackson from Arizona in exchange for Daniel Hudson and David Holmberg.

Even with Jon Rauch doing a fine job in the interim, the Twins solidified the ninth inning by acquiring closer Matt Capps from the Nationals. They gave up Wilson Ramos andJoe Testa.

After suffering a string of injuries, the Tigers acquired Jhonny Peralta from the Indians for minor league lefty Giovanni Soto.

AL West

The first place Rangers continued to position themselves for a playoff run. With Lee andBengie Molina already aboard, they went out and acquired Jorge Cantu from the Marlins in exchange for minor league arms Evan Reed and Omar Poveda. They alsobrought in Cristian Guzman, sending minor leaguers Ryan Tatusko and Tanner Roarkto the Nationals. Texas also received $2MM in the deal.

NL East

The division-leading Braves added depth to their bullpen and outfield by acquiring Kyle Farnsworth and Rick Ankiel from the Royals for Jesse Chavez, Gregor Blanco, andTim Collins. Atlanta also acquired Wilkin Ramirez from the Tigers in a minor deal.

A few days before the actual deadline, the Phillies made a huge splash and acquiredRoy Oswalt and $11MM from the Astros in exchange for J.A. Happ and prospectsAnthony Gose, and Jonathan Villar.

The Marlins bought instead of sold, receiving lefty reliever Will Ohman from the Orioles in exchange for Rick Vanden Hurk.

NL Central

The most complicated trade of the deadline involved three teams and four players. The Cardinals received starter Jake Westbrook and prospect Nick Greenwood, the Padres outfielder Ryan Ludwick, and the Indians prospect Corey Kluber.

The Pirates took advantage of the Diamondbacks' sale, acquiring Chris Snyder, minor leaguer Pedro Ciriaco, and $3MM in exchange for Bobby Crosby, D.J. Carrasco, andRyan Church.

After trading away Oswalt, the Astros turned around and flipped Gose to the Blue Jays for the suddenly well-traveled Brett Wallace.

NL West

The division-leading Padres added a veteran presence in Miguel Tejada, sending minor league pitcher Wynn Pelzer to Baltimore. They also acquired Ludwick in the three team trade mentioned above.

Despite perceived payroll constraints, the Dodgers were one of the deadline's most active teams. Their first move was to acquire Scott Podsednik from Kansas City for minor leaguers Lucas May and Elisaul Pimentel. They then added Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot, sending Blake DeWitt and minor leaguers Brett Wallach and Kyle Smit back to the Cubs. The final move was to bring in Octavio Dotel, surrendering James McDonald and Andrew Lambo.

The Giants acquired a pair of arms for their bullpen. They picked up Javier Lopez from the Pirates for John Bowker and Joe Martinez, plus Ramon Ramirez from the Red Sox for minor leaguer Daniel Turpen.

MLB Trade Rumors

So far the Rangers have to be the trade deadline winners. Especially since they Added Cliff Lee earlier in the year and then secured the batting line up with the additions of Jorge Cantu and Christian Guzman.

The Losers have to be the Red Sox who failed to add outfield depth or a reliever. They didn't do anything except add a bad catcher and designate Jeremy Hermedia for assignment. Way to go sox.

I have a feeling the waiver deadline will be just as busy as the trade deadline.
