NBA Playoff Power Rankings - Western Conference

Here's how I see the Western Conference stacking up, power ranking wise as he go into the playoffs tomorrow night. Again, this isn't necessarily how I think things will finish, but gives a different perspective than the rankings. This conference is FAR more interesting than the East again this year, although the East is catching up a bit.
Let's get right to it.

#1 Oklahoma City Thunder

Yea, I said it. OKC is atop my power rankings in the West. Not the Lakers who are the prohibitive favorite. Not the Spurs who have the league's best record. We don't know what Bynum will be able to provide and Manu is dealing with some health issues as well. Do I think the Thunder are going to win the title this year? I don't know. Probably not, but right now I think they're playing the best ball.
Obviously, they have Durant and Westbrook leading the way. But some might not have noticed the tear Serge Ibaka has been on since the trade of Jeff Green and the acquisition of Kendrick Perkins. Playing at his normal position Ibaka has been able to score more in a variety of ways and is a menace to opposing power forwards. Even better than Ibaka's surge (that's pretty fucking good right there!) has been that of James Harden since the trade. Harden has taken the bulk of the offensive void left by Green and he has finally stepped up to the point where he may no longer be a total bust at #3 overall.
Of course there is that whole experience thing. OKC is still very young and only has last year's playoff loss to build on. They added Perkins who has a ring, but he was always a quiet guy in the room in Boston so don't expect him to really be a team leader. He is what he is. A very physical defensive minded center.

OKC wins if... They aren't phased by the big stage and relish the moment.

OKC loses if... Harden can't be relied on to make that big shot when Durant and Westbrook are under pressure.

#2 Los Angeles Lakers

Still most likely the team to beat out of the West, especially if Bynum's injury doesn't prove to be a major issue. If it is then they could be in a bit of hot water. Kobe's frustration has been bubbling over for a couple weeks now, as evidenced by his outburst the other night. The game doesn't come so easy to Bryant anymore. Watching the Lakers what really stands out his how incredibly hard he has to work for just about every bucket now. Anyone else notice his dunks just barely sneaking over the rim now? Dude's gonna be laying it in before too long. Regardless, I think the old dog still has one more great fight in him, and his intensity is infectious - mostly because you know Pau Gasol, or poopface as I like to call him, is scared shitless of Bryant.
The other key component could be old friend Ron Artest. He just doesn't seem to have the focus he had last season, and especially in the playoffs. If he gets it together and gives them something positive, that could be all they need.

Lakers win if... Kobe doesn't become a black hole when he's not hot, and he gets some help from his teammates (which will aide in the former.)

Lakers lose if... Bynum can't get right, and Kobe hogs the ball even though he's not productive.

#3 Dallas Mavericks

Everyone likes to hate on this team, and right now Portland is the sexy upset pick. Beware of the upset pick that EVERYONE seems to like. Let's not forget Dallas finished the year with 57 wins, tied with LA for the 2nd most in the West. Dirk Nowitzki is money in the playoffs. The last 3 seasons he's averaged 26 and 10 come playoff time. He will get his. It's just a matter of whether or not Jason Terry and Jason Kidd and the rest of the Mavs can provide enough help.
Tyson Chandler has given them an interior presence they have never had during Dirk's time in Dallas. He operates in the post and allows Dallas to score from the perimeter, which is their bread and butter.
All that being said, this team still has a lot of questions. The biggest one being, is the window closed? I'm not sure about that and if ever there was a year for them this might be it. Bynum might be hurt, Kobe is older, San Antonio is also banged up and not as fresh as they once were. You know Dirk is hungry for a ring, but who knows if they can play tough enough to get one. Nonetheless, the Mavs are a fun team to watch.

Mavericks win if... Dirk is a star and Terry closes in the 4th.

Mavericks lose if... Pace of play gets too fast and Dirk isn't able to get his spots.

#4 San Antonio Spurs

I like, Ric Bucher, think the Spurs are a bit of a fraud. I'm not sure I trust this team to make another deep run into the playoffs. And in fact, I think they could get a lot of trouble from Memphis if they're not careful. However, the arguments made against the Celtics are the same ones that can be made against the Spurs, and I certainly haven't counted out the C's. The deciding factor could be the health of Manu Ginobili who I would argue is the focus of the offense now, and not Tim Duncan. He is currently listed as doubtful for the opening game, which will mean added pressure on Gary Neal and George Hill to put the ball in the basket. That means a much easier matchup for trick or treat Tony Allen if Manu has to sit out.
When all is said and done, I'm not sure I can bet against these experienced vets and arguably the Coach of the Year in Greg Popovich. But it won't be a hefty bet.

Spurs win if... Manu can play at full strength and role players like, Neal and Bonner give them big contributions.

Spurs lose if... Manu isn't ready to go and Neal
and Hill can't carry the load.

#5 Portland Trail Blazers

The Blazers pulled off the deal of the season when they hoisted Gerald Wallace from Charlotte. He gives them the depth they've always needed by pushing guys like Fernandez and Batum and most importantly Brandon Roy to the bench. This team now has tremendous depth, amid the emergence of Lamarcus Aldridge as a bonafide stud this season.
Aldridge should get strong consideration for most improved player this season (although it will probably be Luis Scola). He can score in a variety of ways, and has really improved his toughness in the interior - one area I always thought he was lacking. He'll need to continue playing at that level for Portland to make a real run.
One thing to be nervous about as a Blazers fan would be that everyone is all over them right now as the sexy upset pick. The ingredients are all there but who knows if they'll be able to execute when push comes to shove.

Blazers win if... Aldridge plays well and Roy comes off the bench and is productive.

Blazers lose if... Aldridge shrinks under pressure and Roy is relied upon to do too much.

#6 Denver Nuggets

I feel like everyone is just writing this team off, but they've played great since the Melo trade and have a lot of good mojo working in their favor. They have the whole George Karl recovering from cancer feel-good story and got rid of Melo's big ego for a bunch of unselfish players who have come in and played very well together right away.
The Nuggets are the league leader in offensive efficiency, and have a plethora of offensive options. they kind of remind me of an offensive minded Detroit Pistons team that won it all in 2004. They have no All-Stars on the roster but they have great chemistry and they execute their game plan extremely well. Dano Galinari has played very well They also have J.R. Smith who when he is hot can definitely carry a team to a huge victory. Nene is in my opinion the most underrated Center in the league, and doesn't back down from anyone. They also have a little nastiness in Kenyon Martin, which you need to win in the playoffs.
I like this teams make-up, but unfortunately the West is so good I'm not sure they can escape the first round.

Nuggets win if... They get hot from 3 point range and protect home court.

Nuggets lose if... Play gets sloppy and they can't get stops because they're out of rhythm.

#7 Memphis Grizzlies

Some people are saying Memphis can pull the upset in round one. Indeed they've been a vast improved team this season - despite missing Rudy Gay for the most important stretch. However, I think LA would have been a better round one matchup as crazy as that sounds. Zebo, or Zach Randolph as he is commonly known, has put up arguably the best numbers of anyone not being paid attention to over the last couple seasons. It's like the whole tree-falls-in-a-forest type of thing. He should be on full display for this playoff series, and I can't wait to see what he does. If he can draw Duncan out to the perimeter and get him into foul trouble that could be great news for Memphis. The key to the series though should be Tony Parker vs Mike Conley. If Conley is able to get off and distribute and score the Grizz might have a shot. However, he'll have his hands equally full trying to guard the pesky Parker.

Grizzlies win if...Zebo can outplay Duncan by a wide margin.

Grizzlies lose if...Tony Parker destroys Mike Conley and Tony Allen is in foul trouble.

#8 New Orleans Hornets

Chris Paul...blah blah blah. I saw on Sports Nation where Chris Paul is supposed to be a better clutch player than Kobe because he performs better in the 4th quarter than just about anyone. That is example number 1,347,856 why you can't just go by numbers. I like Chris Paul, but the Hornets don't stand much of a chance here.
Seems like a long friggin time ago that the Hornets sat atop these power rankings, but it was only November. How things have changed. They are 14 out of the 16 playoff teams in offensive efficiency.
I don't really even want to waste a whole lot of time on this team. I hope they get contracted along with a few other teams.

Hornets win if...Chris Paul is a world beater and puts this team on his back.

Hornets lose if...Paul is anything short of what I just mentioned (even if he plays very well).

Circling the Bases - American League Power Rankings

One Up, One Down: Rising and Falling in the American League

MINNESOTA

Winners of 7 in their last 10, the Twinkies sit only a half game back of Chicago in the AL Central, entering tonight's action. The addition of Matt Capps has helped solidify the back end of their pen, a hole that had been needing a fill since Joe Nathan went down in spring training. Everyone's favorite All American Boy, Joe Mauer started at Catcher for the first time in August on Sunday, which is good news for the Twins. He had been seeing action at DH with some shoulder soreness. Justin Morneau is close to resuming workouts after his concussion which has landed him on the DL. If they can keep those two sluggers healthy down the home stretch, the AL Central could be a very exciting race to keep an eye on. Twinkie fans have to be optimistic about their position with no Nathan this year, and their two best hitters battling injuries.

DETROIT

I think there has been enough coverage of the Red Sox recent struggles on this site, so I'll turn my attention to another team for my "One Down" segment. I thought about going with Tampa Bay here, but they're still very much in the race, whereas the Tigers have just about removed themselves from it. 3-7 over their last 10 games, they've slipped to under .500 on the year and sit 9 games back of Chi-town as of today. Only the Angels, Indians, Royals and Orioles have a worse team ERA than The Tigers, which may have something to do with their struggles. Miggy Cabrera also has no RBI in his last 7 games. Don't be surprised to see some waiver wire action involving Johnny Damon who has a one year deal and might be able to bring a rebuilding piece or two to Motor City. Damon, has publicly said he would not object to a trade, but would also like a chance at playing in Detroit again next year as a free agent.

AL POWER RANKINGS #1-10, Rank, Team, (Previous Rank)

#1 New York Yankees, (1)

The Yankees still reign supreme over the American League, although I think down the stretch Tampa will give them a run for their money in the AL East. The Yanks are stacked on offense, and got even deeper with the acquisitions of Lance Berkman and added to their 'pen with Kerry Wood. Both of those players came very cheap, which leads me to wonder why teams always seem to give their talent away to the Yankees. A-Rod finally hit #600 and will hopefully settle in at the plate. Jeter is Jeter, and Cano continues to enjoy a very fine season. Did you know? That at this stage in his career Derek Jeter is just about on par with Pete Rose, hits-wise??? Wow.

#2 Chicago White Sox (2)

The White Sox lead their division, for now, with the Twins hot on their trail. Sexy Alexei Ramirez has been on a torrid pace (on my fantasy team, much to DP's chagrin) and the Sox are winners of 6 in their last 10. Gordon Beckham left yesterday's game with a groin injury, only exacerbating his problems this season. If he does land on the DL, I would expect Brent Lillibridge to take over at 2B. Lillibridge is hitting .350 in limited appearances so far this season. Catcher, AJ Pierzynski also rolled his ankle in Saturday's game, got some rest on Sunday, and is expected back in action tonight. Recent acquisition of Edwin Jackson (also on my fantasy team, much to MY chagrin) looked good in his first start, and Freddy Garcia continues to shock people with his good performances on the bump. The Sox have the favorable lineup and rotation in the AL Central, but it remains to be seen if they can put it all together and wrap up this division.

#3 Texas Rangers (3)

The Rangers are 5-5 in their last 10, but still lead Oakland by 7.5 games in the AL West. I think we can just about hang the AL West banner up at Arlington. They begin a home series with the Yanks Tuesday which could be a great litmus test of how good this team really is. I believe this would be a 1st round matchup as things stand right now, but don't quote me on that. Rich Harden is back and has one good start and one shaky one under his belt. The Rangers could use a huge boost if he can prove healthy and effective for the playoffs. They'll likely skip his next start to keep him fresh. Jorge Cantu has been platooning with Mitch Moreland at 1B which has been effective so far. He looks like a nice addition to the roster. This team can mash and they've got some great arms as well. It'll be interesting to see this organization in the playoffs again. I for one am glad that there are some changes in the playoff teams this year.

#4 Minnesota Twins (7)

Basically, just see above. Hot team right now, still getting healthy. Look out.

#5 Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays (4)

I hate that they took the Devil out. Who cares?! Anyway...this team is sta-rugg-a-ling in the words of Joe Namath.

Carl Crawford has been banged up a bit and The Rays have lost 6 of their last 10, 5 in a row. To make matters worse they were almost no-hit AGAIN yesterday, which would have made it an unprecedented third time this season! Whoa. They look to get off the snide against Detroit on Monday night.

#6 Boston Red Sox (5)

I think we all know the story. It is covered on this site daily.

#7 Toronto Blue Jays (9)

I believe is this team were not in the American League East that we'd be talking about them a whole lot more. They're really a pretty decent ball club, but obviously not on the same level as the other 3 contenders in the East. (NYY, BOS, TB) Toronto leads baseball in homeruns and is a very exciting squad to watch offensively, even if the names aren't big. Yunel Escobar (0 HR in ATL this season) even joined the long-ball party when he arrived in Toronto. Is Tiger's doctor still working up there?!

#8 Oakland Athletics (10)

I can't believe this team is not last, but they're over .500 again and the Angels have been sucking it up lately, so here we are. They've got nice young pitching and not much else to write about. Chris Carter, a big-time slugging prospect should be getting the call this week to join the big club after raking in AAA so far this year. He is a big man and should be able to do some damage, but probably won't hit for much average.

#9 Detroit Tigers (6)

See above. They've been fairly stinky lately, making the AL Central a two-team race.

#10 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (8)

So....that makes sense. That'd be like the Boston Patriots. What?!
Anyway...this team doesn't have it this year. They need to reload after basically a decade or so of dominance in the AL West.

Circling The Bases - National League Power Rankings

One Up,One Down - Here is a look at a riser and faller in the NL.

Philadelphia

The Phillies are winners of 4 in a row, and are 8-2 in their last 10, the best 10 game mark in baseball. They sit only two games back of ATL, and 1.5 back in the Wild Card (SF). Obviously, the addition of Roy Oswalt makes their rotation very deep and probably puts them ahead of St Louis for the best rotation in the NL. However, they are a bit banged up offensively to say the least. The oft-injured Chase Utley is due off the DL later this month, and slugger Ryan Howard recently injured his ankle in an awkward slide into 2nd base. They also have serious questions in the back end of their bullpen. My own opinion is that they might want to let Contreras try closing a few games. He's got about 5 pitches to use, and could be pretty good in short inning work. The bullpen, though, could be their eventual undoing.

San Diego

The Padres haven't played terrible in their last 10, but they aren't exactly the picture of confidence for a division winner. San Francisco is only 2 games back and I don't think I would be insane to say that before the season most people would have put the Giants ahead of the Padres. I mean, look at San Diego's roster! Their pitching has been very good, but they are playing way over their heads this year, and adding Miguel Tejada doesn't make me think this team is over the hump. They have no regulars hitting .300 or better. Outside of Adrian Gonzalez, they have no offensive threats. Yet, they still find ways to win.

NATIONAL LEAGUE POWER RANKINGS #1-10 Rank, Team, (previous rank)

#1 Atlanta Braves, (1)
The Braves have won their last two and are sitting steady at .500 in their last 10. The Phils are breathing down their necks, but injuries to Howard and Utley may keep them from overtaking the Tomahawks. The Chop is going strong again down in Atlanta.

#2 Cincinnati Reds, (2)
It's not quite the Big Red Machine, but this rag-a-muffin squad has got enough to win the NL Central if they can hold off St Louis. They play in a great hitters park and have gotten tremendous pitching lead by Johnny Cueto. Unheralded Travis Wood has also been a pleasant surprise. Through 7 starts he has a 2.4 ERA and a WHIP under .9! Who?! Exactly. Perhaps the most unheralded rookie starter in years. His efforts are hardly getting any attention in the shadows of Jason Heyward and Stephen Strasburg.

#3 Philadelphia Phillies, (7)
(See above)

#4 San Diego Padres, (4)
I don't know if I believe in it yet, but they are a division leader in August right now. Gotta give props for that.

#5 San Francisco Giants, (9)
My pick, still, to win the NL West this year. I like their rotation, and while the offense isn't anything to write home about I think they have more than San Diego.

#6 St. Louis Cardinals (5)
Yadier Molina has started to pick it up, finally. But it might be too little too late for St Louis, who has a stellar rotation, and like San Diego, one real big bopper. Although, Holliday is far better than San Diego's 2nd option. 7th in the NL in runs scored, which is not terrible, but they are chasing the NL leader in runs in Cincy.

#7 Colorado Rockies, (3)
Ubaldo Jimenez has been mostly awesome this year, with a few horrendous starts sprinkled in. The rest of the Rocks' rotation leaves a little more to be desired. Carlos Gonzalez is emerging as a young superstar in this league, and MLB would be smart to promote him a little more. Tulo is back from his injury, so hopefully the Rockies can get some momentum going. Remember, this is the team that a couple years back won an insane amount of games in August and September to make a late push for the playoffs, and eventually the World Series (pwned).

#8 Los Angeles Dodgers, (8)
Things are not excellent in Chavez Ravine these days. Billingsley and Kershaw should be a nice 1-2 punch for the next few years, but this team has not been able to get it going this year. Matt Kemp seems more interested in Rihanna (can you blame him?) than baseball. He actually told a reporter that baseball is not the most important thing in his life. And while, that is a nice honest answer, I'm sure Frank McCourt and Joe Torre don't want to hear that. The media is all over him for being out late about town in Hollywood nights before games and such. Basically, it is awesome TMZ type stuff in Dodgertown.

#9 New York Mets, (6)
Having recently relocated to the fine state of New York, I get to watch this debacle on a nightly basis. They are in the top 10 only because the rest of the NL is atrocious. Jason Bay sucks, and might have been Theo's best move yet in letting him go. Jose Reyes is back but isn't quite right yet, same for Carlos Beltran. Ike Davis is a nice looking young player, though, and something to look forward to. Perhaps the most troubling sign of all is the struggles of Mike Pelfrey since the early part of the season when he looked like an ace in the making. He has been awful and it is a pleasure to watch him get all stressed out on the mound. (Well, for me at least.)

#10 Florida Marlins, (10)
Yea, about these last couple spots. I should have just made a top 8. Anyway, outside of Josh Johnson and Hanley Ramirez there is not so much to write about here. So I won't.

The Quarter Poll: QB Power Rankings Through Week 4

We're 25% through the season so it's about time for the latest installment of meaningless lists consisting of 25% effort. Ok fine, 20%.

Team by team power rankings like the lists on ESPN or Peter King's Fine Fifteen are incredibly played out. QB power rankings? Not at all. We've set them up in four tiers here and do keep in mind this considers season to date play only. Last second super bowl drives did not factor into the mix.

Top Tier

Manning/Brees/Favre/Rivers in that order. All four have played incredibly well through the first four games, mistake free and winning games. All are poised to have monster seasons and will absolutely be tossed into the MVP race. When you consider the fact that no running back has broken out yet this season, I might even say these guys are 1-4 in your MVP voting four games in.

Second Tier

Things get a bit more interesting here as this next group is much closer to the bottom feeders than they are to the top guys. In no particular order, Big Ben/Brady/Rodgers/Flacco

Oh fuck finishing this thing. Lists are queer. The point is Manning/Brees/Favre/Rivers are playing on a level that nobody is close to touching and that includes Brady. We knew it would be a slow start for him coming off the knee thing and all but are we even sure it's the knee at this point? Did anybody think he'd be, at best, the 10th or 12th best QB in the league 25% of the way in?

Watch the top four guys play and then watch everyone else. Favre was like a kid out there last night slinging the ball around with such accuracy and touch. In 31 throws he made zero mistakes, not one bad throw all night. Manning, Brees and Rivers can all say the same thing in their first four as well.

My Take:

Scariest Team Entering Playoffs: Cavs
-They are going to win the East, and that regular season home record would be enough to make any team fear them come playoff time.

Ride it Till the Wheels Fall Off: Spurs
-The Spurs are sputtering into the Playoffs. Ginobli is seemingly out for the year, and the long regular season seems like its taking a toll on the aging Spurs.

Most Improved Team: Nuggets
-I'm gonna have to go with Denver here. They have quietly had a really good season. I think getting rid of AI was brilliant, and the addition of Chauncey Billups has obviously been a positive in their season. I don't think they have what it takes to potentially contend with the Lakers, but kudos for having a really good year.

Biggest Dissapointment: Suns
-No matter what, the Suns seem to be in the playoff picture since as long as I can remember. They are my favorite West squad, and there run and gun style is usually enough to at least get them through the 1st round of the playoffs, but this year they're going to come up a little bit short.

Could Make a Playoff Run: Blazers
-The Blazers have what it takes to make a run in the Western Conference Playoffs. They have the talent, proven ability to win, and the firepower to possibly contend with some of the higher seeded teams in the West this season. Looks they might be good for a while folks, and keep getting better as they develop their young talent.

Sleeper: Jazz
-The Jazz play blue collar, grind it out type of basketball. Look for them to possibly play spoiler in the 1st round of the playoffs.

Look Out Next Season: Bobcats
-I think the Bobcats will actually pose a legitimate threat next season. They have had a respectable season, and will undoubtedly add some more young talent through the draft and the offseason. I like the additions of Diaw and Bell from Phoenix, and feel that if they can add a bit more veteran leadership in the offseason they'll be in the playoff hunt come next year.

Put Paper Bags Over Your Heads: Clippers
-With a few interesting off season additions, I thought the Clippers could potentially be hovering around that 8th Spot in the West come seasons end, but they have just been horrendous given some of the talent they have. The Kings are terrible, but the Clips need to reevaluate a whole lot in the off season.
