The Great White Hope

Jack Johnson who? Kyle Singler went off last night. 8 for 10 from long distance. 30 points.

Every talking head in college ball goes on and on about how great this Duke team could be if Singler gets hot. I feel like I've been hearing that from the moment he walked into Cameron. He's always been a shooter without the shooter's touch in my eye. He doesn't take bad shots, he just doesn't hit many open ones. Somehow, he always winds up with 15 points but I swear to god 10 of them come from the free throw line.

Singler was the preseason pick for ACC POY and many saw him as a first team All-American guy. Then as the season began, so did his typical struggles and so did every Jay Bilas wannabe saying just wait for this kid to get going. Does last night mean he's found his groove? Probably not. He'll revert back to his 36.7% from the field, 20% from behind the arc. But last night was awfully refreshing.

SI's All Decade Teams Are Out

And really who gives a shit. But this is interesting -
College Basketball:

JJ Redick (Also, Player of the Decade, all sports)
Shane Battier (Runner up, POD, all sports)
Jason Williams
Emeka Okafor
Tyler Hansbrough

Coach: Roy Williams

Run of the mill Duke dominance if you ask me, no surprises there.

However Luol Deng, Chris Duhon and Kyle Singler got ROBBED.

I Always Knew Duke Was Gay

"A Duke University official is accused of offering his 5-year-old adopted son for sex on the Internet, according to the FBI and court documents in the case. Frank M. Lombard, 42, was arrested last week at his home in Durham, North Carolina. During an Internet chat, Lombard allegedly offered the child to the person he was chatting with, who was a task force officer from Washington's Metropolitan Police, the FBI said in a statement.

The chat was initiated after a confidential source facing child pornography charges told authorities they had witnessed a man, allegedly Lombard, performing sex acts on a child over the Internet. During the chat, according to the complaint filed against Lombard, he told the officer that he had performed multiple sex acts on the boy and that the officer could do the same if he came to Durham (CNN)."

Gross Duke, Gross.

Packers Eyeing Greg Paulus

Yes, that would be the Green Bay Packers of the NFL. Looks like the Assistant Floor Slapping Coach position will have to wait for Duke's Greg Paulus. A league source confirmed the Packers worked out Paulus last week looking to fill a need at the backup QB position.

Paulus was a former All-American High School QB who turned down scholarships to Notre Dame and the U, choosing instead to study jumpball under the tutelage of Coach K. The decision paid dividends early as Paulus was a 3 year starter before a demotion his senior year.

This would be quite a turn of events for Greg, following Duke's loss in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, it was widely believed that would be the last anyone would see of him - at least as a competitor. He certainly possesses all the requirements to fill a seat down the bench from Coach K, a natural fit once Wojo moves on.

The kid was an absolute stud in high school so this really isn't that strange of a move and it would not be suprising to see some other teams kick the tires as well. In addition to being the Gatorade Player of the Year his senior season, he set six passing records in the state of New York and started the US Army All-American Game.

Curry a Devil Now

Former NBA Great Dell Curry confirmed that his youngest son has made up his mind on where he will play next. Any guesses on where? It was stated from the beginning he wanted to play in the ACC and he also wanted to stay in North Carolina. Seth Davis, Chad Ford, Andy Katz, Doug Gottlieb all said anywhere but Duke.

Well the joke is on them as Seth Curry will be the next point guard to lead Duke to the promise land. He will have to sit out next season due to NCAA rules regarding transfers but he'll be good to go right when Scheyer and Henderson are graduating.

While I am not sold on how good he'll be in ACC against superior talent, this is a huge recruiting tool Coach K and the staff can take on the road next year. This will help them land their first viable big man since Elton Brand.

Is There Anything Sweeter?

There is something so nice about the college tradition of cutting down the nets after winning a tournament. Even when you've seen your team do it so many times before.

What a great win for the Blue Devils, especially for the seniors. They deserved it. Greg Paulus deserved it.

70 Wake, 68 Duke

As I was watching the Wake/ Duke game I noticed a couple things. The first is Dickie V sucks, and how this man still has a job is unknown. He is by far the worst commentator in any sport. The second is that our very own Chris Wilde was in the stands (if you look closely at the picture above you can see the bastard) and during Duke's final timeout break, he was giving Jon Scheyer some "encouragement" before he bricked the go ahead three but was able to gather the rebound. After the game Scheyer was asked about the shot and he said that "the "showerboy" gave him the "hope" and "encouragement" to get the rebound after the shot, but he was a little too relaxed when he put the initial shot up." However, the happiness came to an end after Wake was able to put together a perfect inbound play to take the final lead. Most of the players were upset at the loss, but were more upset that the "showerboy" will only go to 3rd base rather than all the way when Duke loses. Kyle Singler looked visibly shook after the game, and screams from him from the locker room were mostly inaudible but people were saying they could make out the words showerboy.

Point Shaving Alive and Well in NCAA Hoops

Or maybe Duke isn't the true #1. Either way, Duke's stay at the top was only one day longer than Kentucky's stay in the top 25. Not worth being one of those dick heads who brags about the #1 spot only to say it means nothing when their favorite team loses it. It was great seeing Duke back there. And they did not back into it anymore than UConn will back into it next week. It's the nature of the beast.

For some nonobjective game analysis, Duke deserved to lose by about 10. The line was 1.5 and some Vegas degenerates were sweating bricks no doubt. Wake did not seem to feel the need to close out at the end. They gave Duke back to back trips to the line where they were able to chip away at the lead without depleting the clock. The Deacons had a chance to ice it with 50 seconds to go and came away empty handed.

Duke regained control with the chance to tie and Jon Scheyer hoisted a solid three. He missed and that is when the Wes Welkahhhh in him came out. He blue collared his away to the rebound. Long story short, Duke scores to ties it up but gives Wake too much time. Wake scores down the other end, Duke can't convert on a Laetner like miracle, game over.

The upshot? Yours truly will now be attending the Duke BC game for substantially less than previously anticipated.

Duke Doesn't Get Respect?

“I don’t even think it was mentioned in the newspapers here that we were No. 2 in the polls,” he said to reporters recently … “I know it’s not that big here,” he said of Duke’s success, “but it’s pretty damn good. So when this group makes No. 2, it’s a new group, they should be celebrated for doing something good.” Coach K

Shut the fuck up Coach K. Maybe the country is starting to catch on to you and your fucking gay ass program. Maybe they are sick of Dickie V, giving every player a BJ every day. Maybe they are sick of Duke being a number one seed and being consistently upended in the sweet 16 or before. Since Duke let that 8 point lead slip in 2004 Duke has done nothing. As long as Coach K keeps recruiting these all heart, little talent players expect Duke to still be a season team.

Eagles Show Solidarity With Jags, Lose to an Ivy League School

After a sensational win at Chapel Hill on Sunday, the Boston College Eagles took to the court to defend their new found top 25 position against the Crimson Tide of Harvard.  Easy win right?
Not. So. Much.  Harvard took the lead with 7:30 to play in the first half and never looked back.

Pretty sad really, just three days after beating a number one team for the first time ever, they allow Tommy Amaker's bunch to beat a ranked team for what I think was the first time ever.  I should probably stat check but no thanks.  Fitting that a Duke man is leading Harvard to places they've never been before.

Oh and in related Duke news, the Blue Devils shut down Davidson for the majority of their match up before allowing streaky Stephen Curry to get hot down the stretch.  Things got a little uncomfortable when the Wildcats trimmed Duke's lead from somewhere in the 20's to just under 10.  Duke had some trouble generating offense but the D stepped up when it mattered.  Solid effort for the number two ranked Devils.

Mark Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy and (fill in play by play) make a great combo.  They did a fantastic job calling the Duke/Davidson game.  ESPN should try these gimmicks more often.  Shit like this works.  Shit like rearranging your entire website does not.  Note to Norby.

What a Day in College Hoops

There is something magical about the Meadowlands in East Rutherford NJ.  Duke has not lost there since 1998.  It has been the home to some great moments in Blue Devil history (see video below).  Today was just another entry in the history book as the Devils dusted the 7th ranked Xavier Musketeers.

Xavier did not record a field goal until the 14:30 mark of the first half and Duke ran out to a 22-3 lead before slowly extending to 30+.  Jon Scheyer had 23 points and was automatic from behind the arc.  Duke's stifling defense over matched the best of the Atlantic 10 and the game was never close.  Great win for the Devils - a real team effort and a nice bounce back from the disappointing loss to Michigan.

Speaking of the Big Ten, its turning out to a banner day for the oft-forgotten conference with big wins out of Minnesota and Michigan State.  Purdue has jumped all over Davidson early and short of some Steph Curry type miracle, they should make the Big Ten 3-0 against ranked teams.

The Mich St/Texas game might be the match up of the day (although Gonzaga and UConn could have something to say about that.  No team led by more than 6 points the entire game and it came down to a clutch 3 by Durrell Summers to get State past the 5th ranked Long Horns.

The 2nd half is about to tip off now out in Seattle and one can only hope this comes down to the wire.  Why?  Two words - Gus. Johnson.

And now, for old times sake, perhaps the best game ever played by a student-athlete.  Duke vs Texas at the Meadowlands just a few years back.

41 points on 12/13 shooting.
