Hobbs Defends Patriots

I was kind of surprised to read these comments. I actually thought Hobbs would be pissed that he was traded, but he seems to have no hard feelings....

“That we’re all a bunch of jerks, starting with the head man, Bill," said Hobbs. "Bill will be the first to tell you he comes off as a jerk, intentionally. Because, I think, what he tries to manifest throughout the players is that we’re here for football.
“There’s so much going on – the circus in the media and all that stuff, and the hoopla in the NFL these days – it’s hard to keep the focus on the game. I think that’s why they have everything so distinguished, set apart from everything, as far as the organization away from the players. Where there’s only access for the players on the lower level -- the players and the coaches. And I think by him doing that, it kind of sets the tone, and let’s you know that we’re here to play football and win games (Boston.com).”

I very rarely question a move that the Patriots make, but I have to say I hated this trade. Hobbs is not a #1 CB, but I don't think you could sit here and tell me he would not be a great nickleback. He is also one of the best return men in the league, and we trade him away for 2 5th round draft picks. Sorry, I just really never got that trade. The Patriots have proved me wrong before, but that is at best a questionable move...

Thoughts On Hobbs Trade

Very rarely will you hear me come out and really question the Patriots on roster moves, but this one does not add up to me. The Patriots parted ways with Hobbs for a pair of fifth-round picks. The Patriots sent the fifth-rounders they acquired from Philadelphia to the Baltimore Ravens for a fourth-round pick (No. 123), which was used to select Penn State guard/center Rich Ohrnberger, and a sixth-round pick (No. 198), which they used to select long snapper Jake Ingram of Hawaii. I mean I see what they are doing. They needed a long snapper, they got one. They need line help they got it, but are these guys really worth Hobbs?

Hobbs should never been put in the #1 CB spot, so obviously he was going to struggle, but I really can't think of a better nickle back then this guy. He also returns kick very well. I know we have drafted replacements for that, but I really hate seeing this guy go. In my eyes you can never have enough CBs, and the patriots could certainly use a guy who knows the playbook. Sorry Belichick, but I have to say I think you may have fucked this one up.

I'll miss you Ellis Hobbs.

Ellis Hobbs Wins Award

"Patriots cornerback Ellis Hobbs, who returned a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Sunday's 49-26 win over the Raiders, has been named the AFC special teams player of the week (Boston Globe)."

Ellis Hobbs has been a great kick returning for the Patriots all season. He is one of my favorite players on the Patriots, even though I don't believe he will ever truly be a #1 CB. If the Patriots had a shutdown corner (Samuel, cough, cough) I think you would see how good Hobbs could be at corner or nickleback. Hobbs takes a lot of risks, but I like his style, and he is always a threat to bring a kick back for the Patriots, which is different since the Patriots have not had many guys like that in their history.
