Spain Wins Euro 2008

Spain beat Germany yesterday 1-0 to win their first major tournament since 1964. Not apparent from the score, Spain dominated the game. Germany had their chances, but either squandered them or were shut down at the end by Spain's defense. Fernando Torres scored the decisive goal when he bitched Philip Lahm and tapped a hopeful ball over Jens Lehmann. The ball painfully trickled into the back of the net to put Spain up 1-0.

Among the Big Six in European soccer (England, Spain, Netherlands, France, Italy, and Germany), Spain had the longest drought of a major title. Now that honor belongs to the extremely overrated English, who have won nothing since the World Cup in 1966. Meanwhile the decade of the 2000s for Germany has seen them go deep into three tournaments, but leaving with no silverware. They lost the World Cup final to Brazil in '02, lost to Italy in the semifinals two years ago, and now have another 2nd place finish in Euro 2008.

Germany 3, Turkey 2

Turkey's George Mason like run through the European championships was ended in thrilling fashion. The Turks had lived off of last minute game-winners, but it was they who were eliminated by a 90th minute goal.

Surprisingly, the Turks came out to a quick start, dominating the first half. They hit the crossbar, then a few minutes later they went up 1-0 thanks in part to a slight miss that fooled keeper Jens Lehmann. It was the first time Turkey had a first half lead in the entire tournament.

But it didn't last long. Lukas Podolski found some room on the flank, before threading a perfect pass to Bayern Munich teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger, who one-timed it into the net to tie the score.

In the 2nd, Germany was on a mission. They played a heavy possession game, not really taking many chances, just waiting for the tired Turks to make a mistake. Keeper Rustu Recber provided the mistake, and Miroslav Klose put the Germans ahead with 10 minutes to go.

Meanwhile, lightning strikes in Switzerland interrupted the international feed of the game. Although most of the world lost the picture, unlike ESPN, they probably sent their announcers to Basel, instead of having them do the play-by-play in a sound studio in Bristol, CT.

The Turks had more late magic in them. Phillip Lahm was bitched on defense, and Semih Senturk deflected the tying goal. But Lahm redeemed himself 4 minutes later with a perfect strike at the 90th minute. Turkey had run out of miracles, and Germany advance to the finals.

If you didn't like international soccer, but watched this game, odds are you became a fan. A back-and-forth David vs. Goliath struggle. Even with the interruptions, it was one of the best matches I've ever seen.

Euro 2008 Quarterfinals

Germany 3-2 Portugal
The Germans shot out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks in part to Bastian Schweinsteiger (most German name ever) returning from suspension. Portugal made it 2-1 before German captain Michael Ballack headed the ball into the net to make it 3-1. Portugal scored again, but Germany survived the last few minutes, knocking out one of the favorites of the tournament.

Turkey 1-1 Croatia (Turkey wins 3-1 on penalties)
This game saw no goals for 119 minutes. Ivan Klasnic took advantage of a goalkeepers' mistake to score for Croatia in the 2nd to last minute of extra time. But the cardiac kids of Turkey refused to quit, scoring in the very last second of the overtime to tie it up. In the penalty shootout, Croatia missed twice, Turkey nailed all of theirs, and Turkish backup keeper Rüştü Reçber made a save to clinch the game. Turkey has already had three come from behind victories in the tournament.

Russia 3-1 Netherlands
Yet another upset. The Dutch looked unstoppable in the group stage, but needed an 86th minute goal from Ruud van Nistelrooy in order to force extra time. But the Russians scored 2 backbreaking goals late in OT to advance to the semis.

Spain 0-0 Italy (Spain wins 4-2 on penalties)
Spain knocked out the World Champions thanks to keeper Iker Casillas stopping two penalty shots. Yet another upset, yet another game that required extra time, and yet another favorite eliminated. Spain looks to be a shoe-in for the finals, as they beat Russia 4-1 a few days ago. But this can only mean that Spain will lose to the Russkies.

Semifinals:
Wednesday: Germany vs. Turkey
Thursday: Spain vs. Russia

The German Super Bowl Shuffle?

The song is called Fußball ist unser Leben (Soccer is Our Life), and it's performed by the 1974 German national team that won the World Cup. I'm German, and even I get scared of krauts making movies that show thousands of Germans waving flags around.

USA Ties #1 Argentina, Germany Rolls Over Poland, Group of Death Opens Up

The US men's national soccer team hosted #1 ranked Argentina last night at Giants Stadium. Coming into the match, the US was 2-6 all-time against Argentina, and 1-9 against teams ranked #1. But a brilliant effort by goalkeeper Tim Howard helped stymie Argentina's offense and earn the US a 0-0 draw, and a moral victory.

However, the lack of goals has to be a source of some concern. The US failed to score in their 3 most recent tune-up matches, all against top teams. They fell 2-0 to England in London, and 1-0 to Spain in Madrid.

The US begins World Cup qualifying this weekend with a match against Barbados in Carson, CA. The two will then play in Barbados. The team with the best combined score will advance to the group stages of World Cup qualifying.

Argentina's arch-rival Brazil fell 2-0 to Venezuela in Foxborough, MA on Friday. It was the first time Venezuela has ever beaten Brazil in 18 tries. Both Brazil and Argentina begin South American qualifying for the 2010 World Cup this weekend.

In the European Championships, it was a good weekend to be the favored team. The Czech Republic narrowly beat host Switzerland 1-0 on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal side beat Turkey 2-0. Croatia beat Austria 1-0 thanks to a penalty kick. And Germany beat Poland 2-0. There were 157 arrests in and around the Germany/Poland game in Klagenfurt, Austria. Most of those arrested were Germans.

The Group of Death begins play this afternoon. Romania plays France at 12 noon, then a clash of the titans at 2:45 as Italy faces the Netherlands.

Euro 2008 is Coming

It seems like I always write about the fringe sports on this blog. Hockey, NASCAR, soccer, et cetera.

I'm excited folks. The UEFA European Championship is fast approaching. For those of you who don't follow soccer, it's essentially the World Cup without Brazil and Argentina. The 16 best national teams in Europe play in groups, then play in knockout rounds. This year's tournament is in Austria and Switzerland, and EVERY game will broadcast live be on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic, and the finals will be on ABC.

Here's ESPN's broadcast schedule

Even if you don't like soccer that much, I suggest finding some reason to root for some team in the competition. Soccer without a rooting interest is like watching dried paint get even dryer. But if you have a team to pull for, it's actually exciting. Believe me, I used to be one of those soccer haters until I started supporting Germany and Arsenal FC.

Speaking of Germany, they'll be winning their 4th European Championship. They're close to home in Switzerland and Austria, and all their major threats are on the opposite side of the bracket. They'll play Italy in the finals and win 2-1.
