Spain Wins Euro 2008

Spain beat Germany yesterday 1-0 to win their first major tournament since 1964. Not apparent from the score, Spain dominated the game. Germany had their chances, but either squandered them or were shut down at the end by Spain's defense. Fernando Torres scored the decisive goal when he bitched Philip Lahm and tapped a hopeful ball over Jens Lehmann. The ball painfully trickled into the back of the net to put Spain up 1-0.

Among the Big Six in European soccer (England, Spain, Netherlands, France, Italy, and Germany), Spain had the longest drought of a major title. Now that honor belongs to the extremely overrated English, who have won nothing since the World Cup in 1966. Meanwhile the decade of the 2000s for Germany has seen them go deep into three tournaments, but leaving with no silverware. They lost the World Cup final to Brazil in '02, lost to Italy in the semifinals two years ago, and now have another 2nd place finish in Euro 2008.
