NBA PLAYOFFS Round 2 Preview

The first round is in the books (as is Game 1 of the second round for both Boston/Miami and OKC/Memphis) and we're on to the Conference Semifinals.

In my playoff power rankings I touched on a few things that proved to be correct, and a few things I narrowly missed on. The Hornets did need Chris Paul to play other-wordly to beat the Lakers, and for two games he was just that. Unfortunately, they couldn't expect him to do that for the whole series and Los Angeles survived an ugly 1st round series. I also mentioned that everyone was loving Portland but I still had a feeling Dallas might have one more run in the tank...and it looks like they do. On the other hand I gave Indiana no chance to win a game against Chicago and they took two! Chicago doesn't look nearly as scary when Rose is shooting poorly. I also misread the ORL/ATL series in round one, despite the fact that my gut told me Orlando was really bad. I still don't believe in Atlanta much, but hopefully they can make the series with Chicago entertaining.

And with that...let's get into some series previews.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

1. Chicago Bulls vs. 5. Atlanta Hawks

Indiana did exactly what any team should try and do against the Bulls - which is to try and contain Rose to long jumpers and trap him off of pick and rolls. They had some success, although Rose ultimately was too much to handle with his athleticism. Let's get this out there right now - you can't keep him away from the rim for a whole game unless he decides to do so. He isn't a high percentage shooter, and certainly wasn't shooting well against Indiana, but he still gets his points on layups, dunks and free throws when he's not going well. Keeping him out of the paint and off the line will be paramount to Atlanta's success. The Hawks will also want to keep a long arm in the face of Kyle Korver who was a big shot factory in round one. I normally hate on Korver pretty hard but he was big in round one, when no other Bulls were really stepping up.
Carlos Boozer can sometimes struggle against lengthy defenders like Horford and Pachulia, so it will be key for Noah to have a big series on both ends.

Bulls win if...Rose is Rose and scores and distributes. (I know sounds simple, but I really think that is all they need.)

Hawks win if...Rose continues poor shooting, or gets banged up and Joe Johnson starts earning some of that contract he got.

PREDICTION - Bulls in 5.

2. Miami Heat vs. 3. Boston Celtics

Game one is already in the books, and we know what happened there. Pierce came unraveled and Wade had a tremendous game as Miami jumped to an early big lead and never looked back.
Three things concern me about the first game for the Celtics.
1) Rondo lacked the aggression he showed through most of the NYK series. (Although to be fair, he was in foul trouble)
2) Jermaine O'Neal was nowhere to be found. (He was huge against Knicks and needs to be in this series. He should be tearing up Joel Anthony on both ends)
3) Lack of effort. All game long it looked like they were reaching for loose balls and grasping as Heat players as they got burned on D, instead of moving their feet and getting after it. After a long break they shouldn't come out like that - and you know Doc was on 'em about it. I don't expect that to last, but it needs to change fast.

Van Gundy and company made a salient point yesterday in that Miami has the most athletic perimeter in the league and the extra pass (something Boston usually does quite well) will be key in this series. And on defense they really need to stay home on James Jones and Mike Miller and get their rotations tighter.
Look for Miami to exploit their athleticism all series long and the drive and dish for three should be their main weapon of choice.

Miami wins if...Rondo can't destroy MIA PGs and Wade and James display great cohesion.

Boston wins if...They use their veteran presence to get under skin on Miami role players - and King James for that matter. (NOT reacting like Pierce did yesterday.)

PREDICTION - Boston in 7.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

2. Los Angeles Lakers vs. 3. Dallas Mavericks

Hard to believe but this is the first time in the "Dirk/Kobe" era that these two have met in the playoffs. It should be a great series both on and off the court, as I can't wait to see some Mark Cuban shenanigans and hopefully some firing back and forth between he and Zen Master Phil.
As I think about this series, I'm not really sure what to make of it. Part of me wants to think Dallas has a real shot - especially with the Lakers recent play and Kobe maybe a bit banged up and certainly getting long in the tooth. However, I just think LA has been doing this too long, and ultimately Kobe, Gasol, Odom and Bynum will be too much for Dirk and company. However, if Jason Kidd can exploit the PG position somewhat like Chris Paul - obviously in a much less dynamic fashion - and Jason Terry can shake loose for his patented big shots they might be able to pull it off. I think stealing a game 1 in LA would be a huge boost to the effort.

Los Angeles wins if... Gasol comes out of his hole and starts resembling the player that we saw in last year's playoffs and they dominate the glass.

Dallas wins if... Dirk plays huge all series and Chandler can make Gasol into a jelly donut like New Orleans did.

PREDICTION - Los Angeles in 6.

4. Oklahoma City Thunder vs. 8. Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis took game one on the road in convincing fashion yesterday. It might be time to start believing in Memphis. They basically tore up a dilapidated San Antonio team, and have now taken the home court from Oklahoma City - who many saw as the best team in the West. Zach "Zebo" Randolph has been huge in these playoffs and the Grizzlies actually have a very 'OKC up-and-comer' type of feel about them. They are a fairly young team with nothing to lose and playing with a certain swagger. It also seems that Pau had his mojo stolen by his little brother, Marc Gasol who is playing as well as Pau is playing poorly.
On the other hand, if OKC can avoid panicking and another me-against-the-world type of game from Russell Westbrook they should still pull this series out.

Oklahoma City wins if... Durant gets off and Westbrook reverts back to his "Robin" ways and quits trying to play "Batman". (That's Durant's job)

Memphis wins if... Zebo keeps playing well and Durant gets shutdown by Tony Allen and the Grizzlie perimeter defenders.

PREDICTION - Oklahoma City in 7

The C's

Alright its over time against the Bucks and Im furious that they are even in this game. The Bucks fucking suck, what the fuck. The problem with the celtics right now is that they cant get consistent guard play. I love Rondo, and passionately dislike House. Yes, House can shoot...at times. I bet Danny Ainge is kicking himself right now, the Celtics are in dire need of a point guard that can LEAD the second team not fire up jumpers every chance he gets. God damn it what are they thinking right now, they are not the team they were last year, they are good but not GREAT like they were last year. I dont know what they were thinking releasing Darius Miles, despite his knee problems I feel that he was more than worthy for a spot on this team. The guy gives you and extra element offensively especially on transition, and he is a solid defensive presence and would have given Paul some time to rest. But what do I know besides the numbers and that the celts really suck right now. My only thought is what the hell is it going to be like for the rest of the league when the Celtics decides to play good basketball.

NBA Thoughts and Predictions

A few games into the 2008-2009 NBA season, I think a few things have been made clear.

-The East is far more balanced than a year ago. Teams like Indiana are no longer doormats and have the potential to win on any given night. Even more to my point, a "second level" team such as Orlando has the look of a team ready to make that proverbial next step. We know what stars like Dwight Howard or Rashard Lewis can do. It's time for former St. Joe's star Jameer Nelson to become a 15 pt and 8 assist guy. I didn't get to see the Celts-Bulls game in full on Halloween but after watching the replay of the game later that night, I am positive Chicago made the right choice with their top pick in Derrick Rose. The kid's gonna be a stud.

-Washington made the wrong choice in giving The Mad Blogger Gilbert Arenas a $100+ million deal. They haven't played well so far without him but last year they proved they're better without their much-maligned, shoot-first point guard.

-LaMarcus Aldridge may not have Greg Oden beside him but he is vastly underrated and it will be a travesty if he's not in the All Star Game this year.

-Elton Brand doesn't look completely healthy, which should be cause for concern for the Sixers. However, Thaddeus Young is one of the best up and coming small forwards in the game. Should be a very interesting team.

-The Jazz have been impressive going 4-0 without their leader Deron Williams. I still don't think they'll have enough to win a playoff series, though. The Lakers, Hornets and Rockets have served notice to the West they'll be in the conference semis. The Spurs, who barely squeaked out a double-overtime win over the Timberwolves last night thanks to Tony Parker's 55 points, are sitting at 1-3. The loss of Manu Ginobli will continue to hurt until December but they'll be sitting pretty if they can hover around .500 until then. This will be a dangerous team come playoff time because of Gibobli's ability to bring energy and intensity while scoring his customary 18+ points a night.

League MVP: It's time for the King to finally get coronated (individually, at least). Lebron James will have have one of those transcendent seasons and has the luxury of facing competition whose stats won't be quite as plentiful due to the other scoring talent on their teams (Kobe, Paul Pierce, Yao Ming and others). He'll be a joy to watch as I plug him into my fantasy lineup every night.

Side note: I had both Amare Stoudemire's 49 point effort and Parker's 55 point explosion on my other team the other night. Those are the nights you live for when you play fantasy basketball.

Rookie of the Year: Michael Beasely purely for the volume of stats he'll put up. I do think Rose will easily be the better player. There was kind of a similar case last year with Kevin Durant and Al Horford (or even Louis Scola). I thought Horford had a better year than Durant but had less touches and plays a different position. Note: I am not saying Horford will be better than Durant, just that his game was a bit more polished last year.

Coach of the Year: This award is a tough one to figure for me. Is it defined as the coach of the best team or the coach who does the best job with what's around him? I've heard the latter the majority of the time but it doesn't seem to be an exact science. Someone like Byron Scott last year was an easy choice as him team overachieved and finished close to the top of the conference. I'm pretty sure Phil Jackson had some decent talent with the 72-win Bulls of 95-96 and won the award. Then there's coaches like Sam Mitchell two years ago who won it based on the fact his team far exceeded expectations. The man I'm choosing this year is Terry Porter in Phoenix. He has the task of transforming the Suns into a half-court team with a group of players in their mid-30's. I think this can be done when you have a guy like Amare on your team. The trouble will be on defense. If he can get it done while winning 50-55 games, he'll roll to the award.

Comeback Player: Jermaine O'Neal is a shoe-in for this award if he play defense. His stats won't sky-rocket scoring-wise but he can prove that he can still rebound and form a great tandem with Chris Bosh for the Raptors.

I'm expecting the final four of the East to be Boston, Cleveland, Philly and Toronto. The premiere series will be the Eastern Conference finals between Boston and Cleveland. This series could evoke memories of the Bulls-Knicks in the early '90s. The Celtics got the better of the Cavs opening night but I think they will be a much different team come May when Mo Williams and Lebron are comfortable with each other.

The West will have the Lakers, Hornets, Spurs and Rockets as its final teams. Once again I think it will come down to the Lakers and Spurs. This might be one of Tim Duncan's last stands and they won't go as quietly as last year to the Lakers.

The Celtics will come down to the wire with Lebron again this year but this time they beat the Cavs on the road in game 7. The Lakers beat the Spurs in 7 at home and Kobe goes nuts, dropping 48 points and wearing the older Spurs out.

Until the Lakers prove they can bang with the Celtics down low and guard the perimeter better than the Finals, I'm going to pick the Celtics. These Celtics remind me a lot of the late-90s Bulls teams because of the way they can pick up their defensive intensity in the second half of games and just stifle their opponents. Boston does just enough on offense to win these games but obviously it will be the defense that could lead them to their second straight title.

Pierce, Garnett and Allen know they have a chance to etch their name in everyone's minds as truly a great team. Everyone remembers the Rockets who won back-to-back championships during Jordan's hiatus but, as Bob Ryan has said, who remembers the 1978-1979 Seattle Sonics? (You knew the late Dennis Johnson was on that team, right?)

Celtics Dominate Bulls

The Celtics led from jump street last night and easily handled Derrick Rose and company. DP wasnt far from the final score as the C's took a 96-80 win. The game was on ESPN again and there was much rejoicing. That being the case i got to watch the whole thing and to me there isnt much more id rather do in life than watch the C's. Especially when they play a game last night and everyone gets to see some minutes.

Gabe Pruitt looked pretty confident last night and Hard Work Leon Powe did what he does and played hard walkin away with 13 pts with 6 bounds. rajon was matched up with the rookie Rose and did Rajon played spectacular- 14 pts and 6 ast. KG reached his 1,000th game last night making him the youngest player ever to reach this milestone, he celebrated with 18pts and 10 boards.

Something that also makes me so happy is the chemistry between all the Celtics. ESPN did a great job of capturing the intimate moments on the bench between KG and Paul, and Rajon and Ray. And when KG was going nuts in the last 2 or 3 minutes over a Big baby foul, Doc jokingly told him to sit down and calm down, the reaction on KG's face made me warm and fuzzy inside--no homo.

Their next game is Tues against the Rockets on TNT i believe

God bless the Celtics.

Eddie and Tony hanging around

Today it was announced that Eddie House and Tony Allen have both been signed to 2 year deals with the Celtics.

Fucking right. While Gabe Pruitt is coming along, the C's need Eddie and Tony off the bench. They both play their roles well; Eddie being able to drop those clutch shots, and Tony with his consistent defensive ability. DP has been reppin Tony Allen for a couple of years now, and i think this year will be a break out year for him. These two guys were intricate pieces of the championships squad and i couldnt be happier to see them locked up for a couple more years.

2-0

From Rajon's Blog:
Well Yardbarkers it got a little scary in the end but we made it two in a row tonight. It was a great team effort and our crowd made a big difference. They were into it and brought so much energy - I felt them the entire night. Tonight was all about getting into the paint and creating shots for my teammates. I take pride in getting the guys the ball and they were hitting the shots. I passed up a few layups and some other shots, but I wanted to spread it around. Look what happened - Paul had 28 and 8 assists so he was passing it too. KG was doing what he's done all year and Leon was big. It was a team effort.

We need to be proud of ourselves for winning the first two games of the NBA Finals. That was big. But two wins are not good enough. We need two more so we need to watch film, stay focused and execute. I do know this, the two wins will make that long flight to LA much better. Stay tuned, I'll be updating you every day during the finals. I'll holla!

96 Celtics, 89 Cavs

Any more questions about Rajon Rondo? I know he had one below par game this post season, but not last night. Rondo had 20 points and 13 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks and was 9-15 shooting. Despite Lebrons 35 points and 5 assists, Paul Pierce, KG, and Rondo managed to withstand it; with 29, 26 and 16 boards, and 20. And what do you know.. Sam Cassell only played 5 minutes. Doc gave Rajon all the confidence in the world last night, and he rewarded him greatly. The refs in my eyes were also terrible having the difference be 41 free throws for the Cavs and 23 for the Celtics, but what else is new? The next game is at Cleveland and I would love to end it there.

Box Score

Also, don't you love how the announcers were all against Rondo last games, but seemed to think he was the man last night.

More Celtics Loss

Now that I have slept this loss off I have to write more on the Celtics loss. I don't really understand why Paul Pierce refuses to drive to the basket anymore, he is great at getting to the hoop and getting fouled and he just isn't doing that. I also know Rondo took a lot of shots in 14 but he hit 7 of them, I don't know why the announcers made that a major issue. With him shooting well I don't understand Sam Cassell basically playing the whole fourth quarter, as soon as Sam came in the Celtics started to lose their grip on the game. Sam should only be used if Rondo starts getting out of control or in foul trouble, which he was neither last night. I want Sam to only play 10 minutes tops during the game. Don't get me started on Eddie House, he will be able to matchup much better with Daniel Gibson than Sam. I am not worried about Ray, he will get into his groove, we saw him get a little hot last night, but he will come around. KG should also be able to dominate Varejo?, Joe Smith, and Ben Wallace, he needs to stop playing like a pussy. 2 points in the second half is inexcusable. So far the Celtics have done a good job defending Lebron James, and am I the only one that is sick of these announcers having Lebron's dick in their mouths.

88 Cleveland, 77 Celtics

Why is the man above ever in the game? Fuck, series is now 2-2, going back to Boston. More when I'm done being miserable.

Celtics vs Cavs

This is what Pierce should do everytime he gets the ball, Wally can't guard so he needs to exploit it. I think the Celtics can withstand Lebron's offensive attack we just need to do a better job guarding Delonte West and Wally on the perimeter. Also, Doc needs to do something about the point guard situation, he keeps Sam in far too long, and is killing Rondo's confidence in shooting the ball, turning down open looks and forcing wild shots that get blocked. Also, Eddie House needs to play, he is a game changer and instant offense when on the court. Either way I think the Celtics will take this game and show they can win on the road.

Tommy Award: Rondo

Here is an e-mail written by our loyal fan:

Dave,
Are you as annoyed w/ the Dwayne Wade and Charles Barkley commercials as much as I am?
Back to the Celts, explain to me why Eddie House isn't playing. He was a great asset to this team all year, and now doc doesn't play him, making him look like a rookie that can't handle pressure. Ray Allen was obviously struggling until the second half of GAME 2. If you don't want Eddie playing the point, fine. But do you mean to tell me he can't come in for Ray and play a solid 2 guard? He can light it up from the outside, and since the celts at times look like kids on offense, he can really help out. Fuck Doc. Also, Gary Tangay said Sam was amazing in the first half of game 2. Amazing? They went on a run b/c of the great team defense, rebounding and overall hustle of the celtics. Sam hit a few shots, but also missed some and doesn't get others involved as much as they could or should be. The Cavs also missed shots. The argument of whether Rondo or Sam should play is insane. Rondo should obviously get more minutes, and Eddie House needs to play more. If not as a point, def as a shooting guard. And I haven't touched upon what Tony Allen can bring to this team. Am I wrong, or is Doc fuckin this up? Show Eddie some love!
-Bobby

108 Cleveland, 84 Celtics

Same shit, different series. the Celtics had no ability to have consistent offense while not being able to stop Cleveland at any time, again on the road. Everyone played poorly for the Celtics, everyone. Sam Cassell had a terrible game and has been the poster child for lack of consistency. Delonte West was the guy that really hurt the Celtics with 21 points and most of them came when the Cs were trying to make a run to come back. Anyways, the next game is on Monday.

89 Celtics, 73 Cavaliers

Hey Skip Bayless I have a couple of more names for your arch nemesis Lebron James Le-Not James, Le-Brick James, Joker James, or Turnover the ball a whole much-ron James ( I know the Last one is kind of a reach) Lebron has not been able to get his game on in Boston going 6 for 24 from he field and has shot 8-42 in Boston while having 17 turnovers. But the best thing that happened in tonights dominating performance is the re-emergence of Ray Allen who scored 16 points. As I said earlier Cassell, and Leon did very well when Rondo and Perk were getting into trouble. For the Celtics KG (13), Pierce (19), Allen (16), and Hard work with 11 points. The guys that really picked up the defense for the C's are Leon, Cassell, and Posey. Big Z( I don't feel like looking up his name) for the Cavs did very well scoring 19 points, but they could only ride him for so long.

It will be interesting to see how the Cavaliers do at home on Saturday, I said earlier get your brooms ready and will stand by that. The Celtics are too good of a team to lose anymore.

Box Score

44 Celtics, 36 Cavs (half)

After a slow start Sam Cassell and Leon Powe have got the C's back in the game with 9 points a piece. I guess Doc Rivers actually does know what he is talking about. 26 points from the Celtics bench. Lebron is shooting 3-13 so good D against him.

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

76 Celtics, 72 Cleveland

What a ridiculous game. Ray Allen doesn't score a point and the Celtics still win. Great game from KG (28), Rondo (15), Cassell (13), it was a sloppy win, but a win is a win. The Celtics were able to contain Lebron James 12 points on 2 of 18 shooting and 10 turnovers. James Posey had an amazing game defensively on Lebron.

Dear Shuaghnessy, KG is Not A-Rod

Also published on Boston Blood Sox

I try to avoid the writing of Dan "Shank" Shauhnessy whenever possible, because I like hanging onto my brain cells. But his desperate attempt to plunge Boston back into the murky swamp of negativity from which he spawned with his Sunday column illustrates two things about Shaughnessy: he is an idiot, and his inability to adjust to the Boston Sports Renaissance has made him irrelevant.

In an environment in which sports columns are an endangered species, dying out because of blogs; only the most unfit, unreal, unintelligent, and outlandish columnists will survive. Shank knows this. He tried riding the waves of sports radio, but his personality failed to make an impression on the air. So now he writes columns like Sunday's wad of toilet paper, and bloggers like me write about him. It's like when Woody Paige vomits his opinions on Around the Horn. Woody's loud and he's wrong, so he gets the attention.

Shank even made an allusion to Andy Reid's "blueprint" for beating the Patriots. As if football teams didn't know that pressuring Brady would slow down the Pats' offense. And as if teams like the Cavs, Pistons, Lakers, and everyone else in the NBA didn't know that getting all the calls, making every free throw, and running your ass off up and down the court would be the formula for beating the Celtics. The Cavs were 2-2 against Boston this season, they hardly needed Atlanta to show them that the Celtics are beatable.

I could analyze, deconstruct, and blow apart almost every argument Shaughnessy makes in his column, but his words are hardly worth my words. I may just be some lowly blogger writing for fun, but at least I can be proud of my writing, my arguments, my opinions.

One sentence, however, was so ludicrously awful, that it must be addressed:

"As for Garnett, I have only two words of warning: Alex Rodriguez."

Unbelievable. Shaughnessy, out of nowhere, compares Kevin Garnett to one of the most reviled athletes in Boston. The Shank tries to point out how A-Rod has no rings, and neither does KG. The Shank tries to portray Kevin Garnett as a choker, just like A-Rod. But it's deeper than that. Shaughnessy chose the comparison to Rodriguez because of things like this:

But all of this is a front for Shaughnessy trying to get under the skin of Boston fans, trying to get fans TO HATE the Celtics for going the full 7 games with Atlanta. TO HATE the Celtics if they lose to Cleveland, or Detroit, or God forbid LA. Shaughnessy wants the 2007-08 Celtics to become the 1986 Red Sox...chokers. That way, he can write more books and columns about how horribly difficult it is to be a Boston fan, and how we should all be proud of ourselves for struggling so valiantly against God's cruel designs.

Back to the quote. A-Rod actually isn't that bad of a post-season performer. He's not "clutch" per se, but he's hardly an automatic out in the playoffs. At the same time, KG has numerous solid post-season performances under his belt. And he looked great in the series with Atlanta. Before coming to Boston, KG averaged 22.3 points, 13.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game in 47 career playoff games with the Timberwolves. That's pretty fucking good, Shaughnessy, yet you dare to compare him to Alex Rodriguez?

As for you, Shaughnessy, I have only two words of advice: stop writing.

-The Commodore

Celtics vs Cavs

Let the games begin. Tonight the Celtics take on the Cavaliers, aka Lebron James. After an annoying series with the pesky Hawks, the Celtics look to slow down the offense and take on Lebron and the Cavs who are a half court offense. The series was tied at 2-2 during the regular season, and the Cavs made a trade halfway through the season that we are still trying to figure out if it worked.
The Line ups are:
Rajon Rondo vs Delonte West
Ray Allen vs Wally Szczerbiak
Paul Pierce vs Lebron James
Kevin Garnett vs Ben Wallace
Kendrick Perkins vs Zydrunas Ilgauskas

The Cavs offense is this: Lebron gets the ball drives and if he can't dunk or lay-up passes it out for a three. A lot different than the high flying hawks. The key to this series isn't the Big 3 or Rajon, it is James Posey. Posey's defense is going to be very crucial when it comes to containing Lebron James (notice I say contain, because no way anyone can stop Lebron).

I believe the Celtics have a better team than the Cavs all around and that is why I am going to say get your brooms ready. Everyone had a hissy fit that the Celtics went to game 7 against the Hawks, well tonight they are going to prove they are the elite team in the NBA by killing the Cavs.

99 Celtics, 65 Hawks

I had a number of pictures to choose from, but I felt this one most fitting, Mike Bibby feeling like an asshole as his team got absolutely dismantled in Boston. It was a good ending for the Celtics, however, this series should have been over in 4 games. There is no reason you can constantly beat a team like this at home but lose all away games. Luckily for the C's they have home court throughout. For the Celtics KG (18), Paul (22), Perkins (10 points, 10 rebounds), Rondo (10) and Powe (12) all scored in double figures while only Joe Johnson and Salim Stoudimire scored in double figures for the Hawks. As for Mike Bibby he had a measily 2 points and 2 assists. I am glad this series is over but playing against the Cavs next we are going to need to play better and not like a bunch of pussies on the road.

Listen I'm not going to blame it on the 47 free throws compared to 25, I'm not going to blame it on the bogus call Paul Pierce got his last foul on, or the stupid plays Doc drew up late in the game, or Joe Johnson's ridiculous three. The Celtics just got beat. Game 7 will be held on SUnday at 1 in Boston and hopefully the Celtics will show up to play. Actually, I am adding to this now, I blame Donnie Marshall, fuck him, he is the bad luck guy, I don't care if Tommy is old, he needs to be there, enough Donnie Marshall.
