JoePa Coming Back Next Year!

Joe Paterno plans to return in 2011 for his 46th season as Penn State's coach.

I love it.

Since Bobby Bowden left, there are no iconic coaches in the NCAA anymore, and Paterno is a living legend and should be allowed to stay as long as he feels. He's 83 right now.

Yes he gave up some of his responsibilities. This fall, Paterno cut back on his schedule during the season, including appearances at the weekly State College Quarterback Club luncheon and on his weekly radio call-in show. He also has delegated more authority to his assistant coaches, who have 153 years of experience combined at Penn State.

But he's 401–133–3.

Good for him.

The Nittany Lion Has A Wee Bit Of A Drinking Problem

The guy who plays the Nittany Lion was arrested for public intoxication and was found passed out in someone's random pick up truck. This is the second time he's been busted for public intoxication and he was arrested for a DUI charge 2 years ago.

not a good sign for JoePa and Penn State, whos going to do the Napolean Dynamite dance:

Penn State Gets Religousy

Michal Berns, a junior majoring in media law and policy, said she refused to buy the $15 shirt because of its religious connotations. “At first glance, you don’t necessarily think that’s what it looks like, but when you look at it more, it does look like a cross,” Berns told Foxnews.com. “That’s the reason I didn’t purchase it.”[..]

“Me personally, I’m not going to buy the shirts and I know others at [Penn State Hillel] who won’t, either.” more
It does have a little bit of a cross look but people need to chill out. It was supposed to look like Penn State's helmet that also has that strip across it. I'm sure Nike and Penn State's secret goal wasn't to convert people. So people should just shut up and pray for their team to get into a BCS title game.

JoePa Returning For 3 More

According to ESPN, Penn State coach Joe Paterno has agreed in principal to a 3 year contract with the university. Paterno is 82 now and this contract would take him through 85. Rumor has it the average annual value will be somewhere around 500K per year. Still beats social security.

I like Penn State and have always had a lot of respect for Paterno but I am having a tough time getting behind this one. Really, I just don't understand it. He had a chance to go out on top a few years ago after beating FSU in the Orange Bowl. The game was beyond thrilling (triple OT) and the season was a huge, largely unexpected success. Why not ride off into the sunset then?

Now he comes back this year with a talented but unremarkable group of guys and an endless media frenzy around his program over when he will actually step aside. I figured they'd have an above average year but certainly not come as close as they did to a BCS championship game. Despite the loss to Iowa, I felt this would be another story book chance for JoePa to go out on top. Win, lose or draw in the Rose Bowl, its hard to consider this season anything but a whopping success.

At the very least, the uncertainty is gone. We know he has the option to come back through 2011. If I was a betting man, I'd put a handsome sum on him retiring after fulfilling 2 years of the contract.

College Football Recap

27 (1) Alabama, 21 (16) LSU

This was an awesome game and definitely lived up to it's high expectations. After a rough start from Alabama, they were able to grind it out and win. Glen Coffee and John Parker Wilson were the catalysts to this victory in "Death Valley" John Parker Wilson threw for only 215 yards, but he had some big throws in crucial parts of the game. Glen Coffee ran for 126 yards and the game winning TD. As for LSU Jarrett Lee now has 13 picks on the year with 6 being returned for TDs. He is by far the worst QB in the country and it is time Les Miles goes to the backup Jefferson.

23 (3) Penn State, 24 Iowa

Sucks for Penn State. They had the easiest schedule on their way to the national championship, however they were caught in the vaunted "trap game" to Iowa. Darrell Clark had a terrible game going 9/23 with 1 pick. Iowa kept the game close for a majority of the game and were able to get in field goal position at the end and Daniel Murray was able to hit a 31 yarder to win the game.

20 (9) Oklahoma State, 56 (2) Texas Tech

Graham Harrell again put up video game numbers as he threw for 456 yards on 40/50 attempts with 6 TDs. 3 of those 6 TDs went to outstanding WR Michael Crabtree. I didn't respect Texas Tech that much until this game. They are a scary team and can get games out of control fast and actually play a little defense.

BCS Mess Waiting to Happen

2004 was perhaps the worst year for the BCS system. Oklahoma, USC, and Auburn all went undefeated. Utah also didn't lose a game. Oklahoma and USC were chosen for the title game. But Auburn won the Sugar Bowl, and Utah won the Fiesta Bowl.

A similar situation is creeping closer and closer this season. Texas and Alabama have a few tests left, but have gotten past their toughest opponents (Oklahoma and Georgia, respectively). Penn State's remaining schedule has a combined record of 15-10. They also don't have to play in a conference championship game.

Three undefeated BCS conference teams is a very real possibility. But let's say Bama or Texas lose a game. Wouldn't their victories over multiple tough opponents earn them a spot in the title game?

My point is that Texas, Alabama, and Penn State could all finish the season deserving a title shot. Yet the BCS system is so inflexible that it doesn't allow for this to happen.

There could be 4 undefeated non-BCS teams this season. Ball State, Boise State, Tulsa, and Utah can all run the table. None of them will make the national title game. But all any team can do is win all of their games. In no other sport, college or professional, is it possible for there to be an undefeated/untied team that is NOT the champion.

The BCS system is completely worthless. No man, no computer, and no combination of the two can determine the best 2 teams out of 120. Prepare for another bowl season with a somewhat illegitimate national champion, or even co-champions.

College Football Picks

(1) Texas vs (6) Oklahoma State

Last week I went against Texas and they screwed me. So this week I am going to pick them to beat the surprising Oklahoma State Cowboys. Colt McCoy is the best quarterback in the country and his stats are video game like. RB Chris Ogbonnaya not only has an awesome name but will be able to run over this Oklahoma State defense all day. I like Zac Robinson, but sorry you just aren't going to win this game but they keep it somewhat close.

Texas 35-28

(3)Penn State vs (9) Ohio State

Penn State all the way. Penn State has a better offense and a better defense. The big story will be the two QBs, PSU Darrell Clark and OSU Terrelle Pryor. Clark has been the biggest surprise in college football and has been able to run an unbelievable offense. Pryor on the other hand has been able to bring Ohio State back and ranked in the top ten, but he will not be enough to take this game.

Penn State 42-28

(7)Georgia vs (12) LSU

LSU needs to win this game and they know it. After getting embarrassed by Florida they need to win out and that starts with Georgia. It is at Tiger stadium and that will mean all the fans will be in their corner. Jarrett Lee has had an up and down season and will have to straighten out to beat a tough Georgia defense. I am not worried about LSU's defense stopping Knowshon Moreno even though he is averaging over 100 yards a game. Georgia's offensive line is their biggest weakness and look for LSU to take advantage of that.
LSU 21 to 10

(7)Texas Tech vs (23) Kansas

Tech easily. I hate Kansas and I don't think they should do well in football and for that reason alone I am picking Tech big.

Tech 42 to 7

College Football Picks

For all of you following my college football picks I am sorry. And if you possibly have been gambling on my picks I buried you. But this week will be my resurrection and improve my 7-7 record.

The game of the weekend is (8) Alabama vs (3) Georgia

I like Georgia and I like Knowshon Moreno a lot, but I like Alabama better. Georgia has an inexperienced offensive line and I believe Nick Saban will be able to take full advantage of it and get to Matt Stafford. Alabama's strength is their offensive line and that has led to a pleasant surprise of Bama runningback Glen Coffee. Bama also has the best wide receiver in the country in true freshman Julio Jones. Georgia can go with the black out/ white out/ red out that is not going to matter on Saturday night, Bama has this game.

Bama 21-17

The second game is (2) Oklahoma vs (24) TCU

I am going to take Oklahoma in this game. Oklahoma has a 24 game home winning streak and has a chance to be the number 1 team in the nation. TCU has a good offensive line, Oklahoma's is better. TCU has Andy Dalton throwing the ball, but Oklahoma's Sam Bradford is better. TCU would have to play flawless to have a chance to upend Oklahoma, and I just don't see that happening.

Oklahoma 35-13

(12) Penn State vs (22) Illinois

This was a really tough decision for me because I do like Juice Williams, but the ultimate decision came down to me always rooting for JoePa. The Lions offense has been out of control and that has led to the biggest scoring differential of 42.8 points. Their defense is outstanding and that leads to a long game for the Fighting Illini.

Penn State 45 to 21

And the non top 25 game

Viginia Tech vs Nebraska

Expect a huge game from Tyrod Tyler, even though he has a hurt ankle. Nebraska is 3-0 but they have played no one so far. Tech's defense is amazing.

V-tech 35-17

I Hate Joe Paterno

Until today I really never had anything to back up my hatred for Joe Paterno, but today he gave me all the ammo I needed. Penn State was up 48-13 over Syracuse (what the hell happened to them), and its 4th and 12, so you kick the field goal right? Well not if you're JoePa, he goes for it and scores a TD. WTF??? Is that necessary? Has Syracuse not been embarrassed enough? I just thought it was classless, and I know what all you Patriot haters are going to say...Well Belichick did that all last year. Yes, I agree that I even questioned those, but there is a big difference between pro and NCAA football. Those kids aren't getting paid. They aren't going to for their big contract. This was unnecessary, and I just thought classless, by a guy who just needs to retire. Screw you JoePa...
