Dueling Couches MLB Preview: San Diego Padres

2008 Record: 63-99

Key Additions:
David Eckstein
Cliff Floyd
Henry Blanco

Key Losses:
Josh Bard
Khalil Greene
Trevor Hoffman
Brett Tomko

Projected Lineup:
1 Jody Gerut CF
2 Brian Giles RF
3 Adrian Gonzalez 1B
4 Kevin Kouzmanoff 3B
5 Chase Headley LF
6 David Eckstein 2B
7 Luis O. Rodriguez SS
8 Nick Hundley C

Unless Adrian Gonzalez has the year of his life this team is going to have a tough time scoring runs. The team is in rebuilding mode, so their hitting is going to struggle. The additions of Eckstein and Floyd are basically just to fill out their team, and will have little to no effect on their run scoring ability.

Projected Rotation:
1 Jake Peavy
2 Chris R. Young
3 Cha Seung Baek
4 Kevin Correia
5 Josh Geer/Wade LeBlanc

Chris Young, and Jake Peavy are a real nice start at the top of this rotation, but after that is gets kind of ugly. This will only get worse as Peavy will most likely get traded at some point this season, as once again...the Padres are in rebuilding mode. Young will 10-12 games, but without much offense behind him he is going to have a tough time this season.

Minors Watch:
Matt Antonelli (2B): Has all the talent in the world, but really struggled last year. If the Padres want to rebuild this team they are going to need guys like Antonelli to really step up their progress. Even with his struggles he will make an impact for this team at some point this year, becuase there is not much blocking his way.

Kyle Blanks (1B): Has a ton of power, but with Adrian Gonzalez blocking his way it is hard to see where there is room for him. Eventually the Padres are going to either move Gonzalez, or trade Blanks. You'll be hearing this kids name in the MLB very soon.

Projection:
The Padres will be the worst team in the MLB this year. The owner is caught up in the divorce and is just trying to cut payroll and sell the team. Look for Peavy to be dealt as they try to build up their minor leaguers. Either way, you won't be hearing this team's name much this season...

Record: 48-114
