Stanley Cup: First Round Recap

Eastern Conference:
#1 Montreal Canadiens defeat #8 Boston Bruins in 7 games
The B’s put up a valiant effort, but Montreal’s goal-scorers were too much for them. Despite the 5-0 finish of Game 7, this series was brutally close, with several games capable of going either way. Unfortunately those games mostly went Montreal’s way.

#2 Pittsburgh Penguins defeat #7 Ottawa Senators in 4 games
Pittsburgh dominated this series, outscoring Ottawa 16-5. Penguin goalie Marc Andre-Fluery had a .955 save percentage, and Sidney Crosby had 8 points (2 goals, 6 assists) to lead Pittsburgh to their first playoff series victory since 2001.

#6 Philadelphia Flyers defeat #3 Washington Capitals in 7 games
The Capitals came in hot, maybe too hot. Their impressive end of season run may have worn them out a bit. Daniel Briere and Vaclav Prospal combined for 19 points, and Alexander Ovechkin only managed 3 goals and a -1 for the series.

#5 New York Rangers defeat #4 New Jersey Devils in 5 games
Martin Brodeur just didn’t have any more magic left in the tank, but Jaromir Jagr and former Devil Scott Gomez did. They combined for 15 points, and Gomez was +5 on the series.

Western Conference:
#1 Detroit Red Wings defeat #8 Nashville Predators in 6 games
Nashville put up a valiant effort, but Detroit is relentlessly deep at all positions. Even when Dominek Hasek melted down, he was replaced by Chris Osgood, who recorded his 11th playoff shutout in the series clinching game.

#2 San Jose Sharks defeat #7 Calgary Flames in 7 games
Although Jarome Iginla had a great series, the Sharks simply had too many top players and too much solid goaltending by Evgeni Nabokov.

#6 Colorado Avalanche defeat #3 Minnesota Wild in 6 games
Jose Theodore and the ageless Joe Sakic led the Aves past the Wild. The key to this series was shutting down Minnesota’s most lethal weapon: Marian Gaborik. Gaborik was held to 0 goals, 1 assist, and a -3 rating.

#5 Dallas Stars defeat #4 Anaheim Ducks in 6 games
With Anaheim out, both of last year’s Stanley Cup finalists have been eliminated. Nobody stepped up for the Ducks, but goalie Marty Turco and forwards Mike Ribeiro and Brendan Morrow came up huge for Dallas. And those names rhyme. Coach Bombay was unavailable for comment.
