Not to be one of those people that say bold claims, but I truly believe the best thing to happen to this team, this year is KG being out. Kevin Garnett is the heart and soul of the Boston Celtics and not only is the glue that holds this team together but the defensive leader on the court. With him being gone, this puts the pressure on his teammates. Here is how it will break down:
Rajon Rondo:
Not only does he have to be the go to guy defensively, but he has to score more. It is highly likely that his 32 point game yesterday wasn't a coincidence. With KG out, Rondo will have to take his game to another level and put up at least 18 points a game.
Kendrick Perkins:
Perkins is going to have to shoulder the low post defense by himself. If Perkins can somehow play his physical defense and stay out of foul trouble I will take it. Perkins offense is shaky at best, sometimes he looks like a legit low post scorer and other games you don't remember him playing. If Perk can keep defenses active on the low post defensively, that should open up a lot of things for the jump shooters on the team.
Brian Scalabrine:
Scal has the duty of starting in place of KG. Scal had 14 points yesterday, but don't expect him to be doing that consistently. As long as Scal plays gritty defense and get an occasional three, that will do. Who would have thought that Scal would be an intricate part of the Celtics this year. I also have to admit I was wrong when I said that Danny Ainge should cut Scal and keep Miles.
Leon Powe:
1/2 of the trashmen tag team. Leon is a very physical player who has a nose for the ball and also a unprecedented ability to get to the free throw line. If Leon can get around 10 points a game that would be fantastic, his defensive abilities are limited against most really tall centers/ power forwards, but unless the guy is above 7'1, he should be able to handle them.
Glen Davis:
The other half is Ronald Glen Davis. Glen should receive a lot more time on the court, and that should automatically help his maturity. Baby will also need to get his scoring average up and keep defenses honest with his jump shot. If Baby can consistently get around 7 points a game and stay out of foul trouble that should be enough.
So with all that being said. All of these guys will need to step up and not hide in the Big 3's shadows anymore.
