Maybe it's the weather. According to Mike Sciosia, it was the umps. According to Torii Hunter, it was a lack of heart and shaky nerves. I think it's the attitude and approaches of the two teams. But whatever the reason, once the leaves start turning, the Red Sox own the Angels.
And with tonight's pitching matchup, it doesn't look like this trend will change. The Angels send out Ervin Santana, who's 7-8 with a 5.52 ERA. Lefties have hit him hard this year, so look for nice nights from Drew, Ortiz, and Ellsbury.
Josh Beckett has been a mystery this year, but his last start was superb. He scattered 4 hits and 1 run in 5 innings of a rain shortened win. Torii Hunter (.455), Chone Figgins (.333), and Howie Kendrick (.375) all hit Beckett well. But Josh owns Abreu, Guerrero, and Juan Rivera.
I think Beckett has a solid, but not brilliant start. Ervin Santana labors through 5 innings, and the Sox win this game 6-3.
Here are the lineups, and Victor Martinez is back (he's 4/8 against Santana):
