Aaron Rodgers told the Green Bay faithful today that, "We've got one, so now what? Let's go get another one." To me, there is a bit of a problem with that statement. I do not see the Packers as being repeat champion material. Yes, the Packers won on Sunday to cap off an amazing playoff run. However, they were a bit lucky to walk away with that win.
The big glaring hole in the Packers offense to me on Sunday was their total lack of a running game. They ran the ball just 13 times for 50 yards. Pittsburgh ran the ball for 126 yards and most of their third quarter scoring drive was done entirely on the ground. Had Pittsburgh not lost 17 points on turnovers, you may have seen a lot more ground and pounds. The lack of a running game was evident for Green Bay was most evident in the 4th quarter. They had first and goal from the four and wound up trying for a short pass instead of some type of end around or heavy draw play package. They did manage to get a short pass TD from that drive. Later in the 4th, they had to settle for a field goal when they had an excellent opportunity to ice the game. Maybe the Packers will want to spend some money on a running back rather than on poker sites for US players.
Next, Green Bay was never able to really ice the game against the Steelers. I partially blame Jordy Nelson for this. There were two big pass plays he dropped that would have either been touchdowns or would have had them in goal territory. That is 14 points right there gone on balls that should have been caught. Their lack of a run game cost them the late touchdown to seal it.
Finally, the fact that their defense was able to take away the ball three times from Pittsburg was amazing. Each of those resulted in points. 17 points off of turnovers. However, they still gave up more yard than their offense gained and the Steelers were on the field longer.
I am not trying to take away anything from the Packers win. They had a helluva game and deserved the win. However, I do feel that the game was an anomaly. Green Bay was hot at the right time and found a way to shut down Big Ben and the Steelers. Bookies across the country lost a lot of money to poker for iphone players due to the bets. If the same bookies make the same bet next year, they should win.
