"The Mets know that they will have to dig deep into their pockets to sign free agent John Lackey. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports today that the Mets are pondering a plan in which they allot the big bucks for Lackey then fill their other needs, specifically in left field, at a low cost.
Sherman says the Mets hope that Lackey agrees to a price range somewhere between what Derek Lowe (four years, $60 million) and A.J. Burnett (five years, $82.5 million) received last year (ESPN)."
The Mets have to get starting pitching if they ever want to be relevant again. Is Lackey the answer? No, but he is the best free agent pitcher out there, so this might not be a bad idea since they are a "big market" team, and thus would rather spend the money then give up prospects. Lackey could be very good in the NL, and since he won't have to be the ace it could be a very nice situation for Lackey.
Personally I still think he is going back to the Angels.
