No Playoff System Until At Least 2014
The commissioners of the 6 BCS conferences, as well as the Athletic Director of Notre Dame, decided against a plus one playoff system to determine college football's national champion. Only the commissioners of the ACC and SEC were for the proposal, everyone else was vehemently against it.
So that's 7 more years with no clear national champion. By my estimates, that's about 5 teams that will deserve a shot but get snubbed. Approximately 3 teams that won't deserve a shot but will get one. And maybe, if we're lucky, one game between a clear #1 and a clear #2.
College football is also adding two more bowl games, bringing the total to 34. The Congressional Bowl will be played in Washington, DC between Navy and an ACC team. The St. Petersburg Bowl will be played at Tropicana Field between a Big East team and a C-USA side. I guess 32 bowls (about 24 of which are meaningless) just wasn't enough
I love the game of college football, but despise how it's run. The only major sport that's run with more sleaze, more backroom deals, more confusion, more disarray, is boxing.

Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1
Wow, my prediction of a 7-5 Sox victory was way off, but at least I got the winner right.
The starting pitching on this team has really started to click. Daisuke came back from the flu with a vengeance, going 7 innings, allowing just 2 hits, 2 walks, and 0 runs. Unfortunately for him, sparse offense and the struggling middle relief cost him the win.
Delcarmen pitched to one batter in the 8th, allowing a single. Then Okajima came in, allowed a double, and a sacrifice fly. That's Okajima's third blown save (even though the run got charged to Delcarmen) of the season. He had 2 blown saves in all of 2007. And if it weren't for a sensational diving catch by Brandy Moss (what he'll be called from now on), things could have been much worse.
But the Sox bats came up big in the 9th again. Ortiz singled, Manny walked, Lowrie pinch ran for Ortiz on second, Brandy Moss singled up the middle, but this time Vernon Wells came up with a great throw, and Greg Zaun blocked the plate Patrick Roy style to tag out Lowrie. But Varitek followed that play with another single up the middle, this time scoring the suddenly speedy Manny Ramirez.
Ortiz had one of those "maybe he's coming out of it" games, going 2 for 4 with a solo homer, and the single in the 9th. But we've seen this from him several times this year, so I'm not getting my hopes up.
The Sox go for the sweep Thursday night as Tim Wakefield takes the mound against AJ Burnett.

110 Boston, 85 Atlanta
Well finally the Celtics got their shit together and dominated and showed the youthfulness of this Atlanta Hawks. The Celtics went back to playing the way we were used too. Even though the free-throws were lopsided for much of the game the Celtics persevered and was able to ruin this Hawks team. Mike Bibby struggled again with 6 points (2 for 8 shooting) and Joe Johnson was held in check for the most part with 21 points (however, he was double teamed and not given an easy lane all game) For the Celtics Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, KG, Rondo, Leon, and Sam Cassell all scored in double figures. Rondo has had a 40-4 assist to turnover ratio which is ridiculous. Fridays game will be held in Atlanta and hopefully the Celtics can finish this series there.

Randy Moss + NASCAR?
Randy Moss announced the foundation of Moss Motorsports the other day. The team has no sponsors, yet. No drivers, yet. No anything, really. But that's how most race teams start.
The team will run in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, the 3rd tier NASCAR touring series (Nextel Cup is #1, Nationwide is #2). The truck series is essentially the arena football league of NASCAR. Lots of old talent that went nowhere, lots of young talent going nowhere, and the occasional young player who will catch the eye of an NFL franchise.
I really don't know what to say.

Celtics vs Hawks
No more talk, no more "blood, sweat, and tears", no more excuses. This series should have been over Monday, but instead the series is tied at 2. The Big 3 need to step up and play unselfish basketball this game, Doc Rivers needs to stop fucking with the rotation so much, and for them to communicate on defense. Also, for fuck sake if Joe Johnson proves to be superman again, double team him or put Tony Allen on him. The Celtics need to make the Hawks shoot jump shots rather than getting to the hole. Also, hopefully the refs will swallow their whistles this game. It is in Boston tonight so we got the crowd as an advantage, but we need to stop playing like assholes.
Avery Johnson Gone
Avery Johnson is out as the Dallas coach after another first round defeat. Avery finished Dallas with a 194-70 record, and made the championships in 05, when he lost to the Heat in the finals. In my opinion, Avery should have been out as coach last year when they were upset by Golden State in the first round. (Oh yea, they were a 1 seed and Golden State was an 8 seed) Maybe a change of coach can get the Mavs over the hump or maybe it's time to get rid of Dirk, sure he is an Elite player but hasn't proved he can handle pressure and finesse 7 footers don't do it for me.
Red Sox/Blue Jays Preview
Although the Sox won last night, they still have yet to find that offensive power which fueled their recent hot streak and propelled them to first place. The Sox have scored an anemic two runs in their last three games.
Tonight will see the return of Daisuke Matsuzaka to the mound. Matsuzaka hasn't pitched in a game for nearly 2 weeks, one of the many victims to the flu circulating through the Sox clubhouse.
He faces Dustin McGowan, who is 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA on the year. The Red Sox haven't seen a whole lot of McGowan, but when they have, it hasn't exactly been a slugfest. Combined, the Sox are 13 for 57 against McGowan (.228). Mike Lowell is the only Sox batter with a reasonable amount of success against him. It doesn't look good for the slumping Sox offense to break out of its collective slump.
Then again, the more a team sees a pitcher (especially one as mediocre as McGowan), the more tuned in they are to his pitches. I think the Sox break out, but a subpar start from Daisuke keeps the game interesting. Sox win 7-5.

No Suspensions for Celtics vs Hawks
I am obviously happy about this. KG, Zaza Pachullia, Kendrick Perkins and Marvin Williams will all be playing tonight for this fight. But you have to look back to last year in the Phoenix/ Spurs fight, which caused Amarie Stoudimire to be suspended, ultimately caused the demise of the Suns. I don't really get David Sterns logic because Marvin Williams and Kendrick Perkins blatantly got off the bench and headed towards the fight, which is technically an automatic one game suspension.

Mike D'Antoni Out Of Phoenix?
ESPN.com is reporting Mike D'Antoni is out as the coach of the Phoenix Suns a day after their first round play-off loss to the Spurs. Listen, I like the Suns and like D'Antoni, however, they have no more excuses left. Two years ago Joe Johnson was injured, one year ago there was the Amarie Stoudimire suspension, this year, everyone was healthy. Shaq did a good job against the Spurs, but I believe Marion would have been more effective. They need a new coach to come into Phoenix and bring defense to the forefront. Maybe Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau?
I believe their window is still open but it is very close to being closed, I think Thibodeau will and should be their guy.

Larry Brown To Coach The Bobcats
Larry Brown is set to coach the Bobcats. The question is, can he deal with a young team and can him and MJ coexist? listen Larry Brown has been a good coach in the past, he has over 1,000 wins, but I don't think he can coach anymore. After the New York debacle, I don't think he can handle more young players.
Zito to the Bullpen
Hey Giants hows that hefty 7 year, 126 million dollar contract working out for Barry Zito? The always mediocre Barry Zito and the Giants prize a couple of years ago is headed to their bullpen. Everyone knew that he wasn't worth that money when they signed him except for I think the Giants. Zito last year went 11-13 with a 4.53 era and this year has gone 0-6 with a 7.54 era and has been delegated to the bullpen.
I don't have any further analysis into this other than, everyone told you so Giants.

92 Celtics, 97 Hawks
1rst Quarter
The Celtics started off extremely fast with a 21-9 lead, however the Hawks went on a tear with a 21 to 3 run with the Celtics losing their intensity. The Celtics were getting every foul called on them while the Hawks were getting every call for them. At one point Josh Smith mugged Rondo and there was a no call. KG, Rondo, and Pierce all had 2 fouls by the end of the first quarter and the Celtics were down 29 to 24.
2cnd Quarter
At the end of the first the Cs were not playing team basketball, there was no defensive talking and the players all were playing very selfish making it a one on one game, rather than a team game. The more and more I watch this series the more and more, I am beginning to despise Al Horford, which is funny because he was the only one out of the Florida bunch I liked. Right now with the foul trouble the line up is Cassell, Paul, Posey, Leon, and Big Baby. Also the Hawks free throws are 13 to 4. And a fight broke out, KG and Pachullia both got in a squabble, Sam Cassell was the first to defend his superstar, which is nice to see. Technical fouls on KG, Cassell, Pachullia and Johnson. What I think the Celtics problem has been offensively is the fact they haven't trusted Rondo with setting up the offense.
Speak of the Devil, the Celtics have done exactly that the past couple of minutes and the score is 39-36 Hawks. With the Celtics finally getting to the line, they are not capitalizing at all going 4-8. Mike Bibby has had a hell of a game so far with 18 points in the first half.
3rd Quarter
With the start of the third quarter you can see the Celts have uped their intensity defensively with the hawks starting out shooting jump shots and drawing an offensive foul. And with 9:03 the Celtics took the lead 55-53. I love the fact KG being very aggressive shooting the ball. With 5:37 in this very quick third quarter Perk gets called on a phantom offensive foul, which cost the Celtics two big buckets with them being down 57- 55. The more and more I watch this game, I think what if Joe Johnson didn't get traded for Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers that year, and would they have been better off with him that play-off run? I am also questioning Doc Rivers rotation at this point, why no Eddie House? Why does Leon play one game than not another?(same thing with Big Baby)
Anyways, back to the game. I am very impressed by Ray Allen defensively this year, his big knock was playing zero defense but he has shown me he can be a force defensively. The Celtics are having a real tough time hitting the twine on free throws but lucked out as Posey got his own miss and eventually Ray Allen hit a jumper to make the score 67 to 63. It's nice to see Rondo have his confidence back with a behind the back pass to KG, earlier in this game we wouldn't have seen that from him but as the game has progressed and the more and more the Celtics have let him play "his" game. With that being said the Celtics have gone on a 11-0 run. The score is 75 to 65 Celtics.
4th Quarter
The Hawks started off hot and cut the lead to 5 points. With 10:27 in the quarter finally Eddie House is in the game. Thank God for Ray Allen who hits a huge three to make it a 6 point lead with 8:30 left. Paul Pierce needs to shoot better than 50 percent from the line, 4-8. BLOCKING FOUL, Josh Smith charged into Leon and they call a fucking blocking foul? Fuck you, refs. I am getting infuriated with the refs, its bad enough the Hawks have shot 24 to 16, Mike Bibby has his right arm blocking Rajon from defending him all game and it's killing the Celtics. 5:53 is left on the Clock and the Celtics are up 79-78. Fucking Joe Johnson come back from 10 points in the 4th to be leading by 5. Joe Johnson is playing out of his mind hitting every time he touches the fucking ball, Atlanta is now up 84 -79.
JOE JOHNSON, REBOUNDS, FREE THROWS, 4-15 IN THE FORTH QUARTER, REFS, SHITTY PLAY, UNACCEPTABLE

Byron Scott Wins Coach Of The Year
I know I am a homer, I know the Celtics have 3 superstars, and I know Byron Scott had a hell of a year as the Coach of the New Orleans Hornets. But I believe Doc Rivers should have won this. He won 66 games this year compared to 24 last year. If he weren't coach we wouldn't know how good Leon Powe and Glen Davis actually are. He has been fantastic this year (not last game) with his rotations of players, while being able to manage three stars on one team, and that has to be hard. Anyways, Byron did a swell job I beleive Doc did a better job. Danny Ainge has to win the Exec of the year.
Bench Clearing... Chit Chats
I got real cheesed when I saw this. First of all, hitters have become over reactive little girls when it comes to getting hit, or even brushed back by pitches. Grow up and take it like a fucking man, not some millionaire crybaby.
Second of all, if you're gonna make a move toward the mound, go all out. Start running for the pitcher, hope to get there a few seconds before everyone else so you can get a few good shots in. Or karate chop the catcher to remove your biggest threat.
Finally, when the benches clear, do something! Don't just mill around and play grab ass with each other. This is what you're supposed to do when the benches clear:
So you know what Major League Baseball should do? Make a new rule. Any hitter that intentionally moves onto the grass in front of home plate should be automatically ejected. It should be mandatory, like arguing balls and strikes. Even if they're not charging the mound, when they just step in front like Molina did, they cause both benches to clear. It causes nothing but trouble, and BORING trouble at that.

Celtics vs Hawks
Remember this? I am sure Paul Pierce, KG, and Ray Allen will. What the fuck was Hortford thinking, he just awoke a giant. I know the Celtics lost and I was wrong about "fo, fo, fo" But rookies really shouldn't be talking. I expect Pierce to get about 35-40 tonight and the Celtics go back to beating the Hawks by 20.
Tommy Award: Paul Pierce
Pat Riley Steps Down as Head Coach
Not only does Pat Riley look like the most evil man in my eyes, but he is done as a coach in Miami after they went 15-67. Pat Riley is a Hall Of Fame coach that probably shouldn't coach again. His head wasn't in it all year, and at the end of the season he didn't even show up to games with his excuse being he was "scouting players". Erik Spoelstra a 37 year old assistant coach is taking his place.
Roger Clemens News
According to ESPN.com:
"Clemens and country singer Mindy McCready had a decade-long affair" This is exactly what Clemens doesn't need, another character issue gets brought up. She isn't that bad looking and maybe he got a threesome with her and Debbie, not bad I guess.
He is still a hall of famer in my eyes.

Possibly the Worst Team Name in Sports
And why did they change it? Was the word “devil” offending all three of their fans? Is that word even a big deal, especially when it’s part of an animal’s name? Should Looney Tunes change the name of the Tasmanian Devil to Tasmanian Marsupial? Should Wake Forest simply become the Deacons? Should Arizona State call themselves the Suns? What about the Duke Blue Devils, the New Jersey Devils, or Manchester United (known as the Red Devils)? Should Miroslav Satan file for a name change?
I hate the over sensitivity to team names these days. Every team named after an Indian tribe gets grief for it. How come nobody criticizes Notre Dame for having a nickname and logo that portrays Irishmen as drunken brawlers who look a lot like monkeys? There’s a D-III school called the Alfred Saxons, and as a person of Saxon descent, that name offends me, because they blow. Or what about the MSU Spartans, a team named after a warlike Greek city-state that abused its children.
Tampa Bay Ray owner Stuart Sternberg proved how retarded and gay this name change was when he described it as:
"A beacon that radiates throughout Tampa Bay and across the entire state of Florida."
Wow.

Devil Rays 3, Red Sox 0
The last time the Red Sox lost a series to Tampa Bay was August 2006. The last AND ONLY time the Red Sox had been swept by Tampa Bay was in a 2 game set at Fenway on June 30 and July 1 of 1999. John Wasdin and Jin Ho Cho were the two losing pitchers. This weekend, for the first time ever, the Rays swept the Red Sox in a 3 game series. And they should be embarrassed.
The Sox scored a total of 5 runs in 3 games. An 8 inning 2 run start by Buchholz was wasted, a 7 inning 2 run start by Beckett was wasted. And the Sox made James Shields look like Pedro Martinez circa 1998.
This team has been terribly inconsistent. After winning 6 in a row, they've lost 5 in a row. And don't look for things to improve. The Red Sox and Blue Jays square off for three games. Toronto swept the Sox a few weeks ago, and Roy Halladay is starting Tuesday night.

Picks 21-25
21. Atlanta Traded up to get OT Sam Baker USC, an absolute stud tackle, and the now they got their QB they need to protect him.
22. Dallas picks Felix Jones Ark, I told Bob his pick was stupid. Dallas is absolutely pumped they get this guy. He is explosive and will make a great fit as the one- two punch in the Big D.
23. Pittsburgh Picks Rashard Mendenhall, who is my boy. With Talib off the big board I believe this will be a great pick. Mendenhall along with Willie Parker in the backfield will be a very scary tandem to deal with.
24. Tennessee picks Chris Johnson, this by far is the reach of the day. Johnson definitely would have been there in the second round. Vince really could have used a WR. I don't like this pick, the Titans already have a clusterfuck in the backfield and this puts another wrench in it.
25. Dallas in a trade picks CB Mike Jenkins who I believe is one of the best CB in the draft behind Talib. They got a steal here.

Game 3 Preview
The Celtics travel to Atlanta for game 3, and Paul Pierce said he's ready to go. That means you can pretty much put this one in the books. The key match-up of the game will be Rondo - Bibby, Rondo is averaging 13 points, 6 rebounds and 8.5 assists while Bibby is averaging 8 rebounds, 3 rebounds, and only 1 assist. I would love to hear some Rondo's better chants in Atlanta.
Tommy Award winner, "Hard Work" Leon Powe of course
Sam Vincent Fired
Sam Vincent is one and done in Charlotte. The Bobcats fire Vincent after one year of coaching where he led the Bobcats to a 32-50 record. I believe that Vincent got the short end of the stick here, sure he has immense talent on the team, but Sean May and Adam Morrison didn't play all year, and they also were without Raymond Felton and Gerald Wallace for stretches. I think the best thing for a young team like the Bobcats is for them to develop cohesiveness with their coach. (ask Doc Rivers) I'm not one to question Michael Jordan, but he hasn't done a great job with the Bobcats since he took over.

Wow. To be honest I was worried that Lost would lose its momentum from that damn writers strike as this season has been unbelievable so far. With The Number 31 Pick in the 2008 NFL Draft the New York Giants Select....
But Seriously,
Mario Manningham. I know they have more pressing needs at LB and S, however, I don't see a linebacker or safety being worth taking at the pick, and a talent such as Manningham is hard to pass up (this is a guy who if he left last year and didn't get hurt would have been a top 10 pick easily). With Toomer getting older, Plax's leg getting injured all the time, and the emergence of Steve Smith, I believe Super Mario will be a good fit and an extra weapon for ShEli Manning.
But they may take the Dildo
With The Number 29th Pick in the 2008 NFL Draft the San Fransisco 49ers Select....
WR- James Hardy- Indiana
The 49ers desperately need a play making WR and help Alex Smith out and this should be a great start. Hardy is 6-6, 217 and will be an easy target for Mr. Smith. He will be a terror in the redzone, and has excellent open field spped for a guy his size. Him teamed up with Vernon Davis and Frank Gore should be enough for Alex Smith to put up some numbers and change the word "bust" from his name.

Skirt Day
- The First Two Days of March Madness
- Skirt Day
- July 3rd
Today, we'll spend sometime discussing what makes number 2 so damn amazing.
I think my favorite part of Skirt Day is that you never know when it is going to occur. We always know that March Madness begins on the 3rd of 4th Thursday of March. July 3rd is July 3rd. But Skirt Day? It Could fall within an unpredictably wide 4 or 5 week range. This leads to plenty of "almosts" and inevitable disappointment but when the day finally comes, you wind up feeling like Josh Hartnett at the end of 40 Days and 40 Nights.
Skirt Day 2008 came a little early but you can officially throw it in the calendar as April 23rd, 2008. The temps rounded out at about 80 degrees and the breeze was delightfully warm. Thankfully, we were not blue balled to death with glorious weather reports only to have a sea breeze fuck it all up this year and there were really only a couple of close calls. Believe me, it could have been a lot worse. I recall a couple of years back at URI days where the day eluded us until early May.
If you think this day loses its luster the older you get, you are sorely mistaken. It was fun in college because you had the quad as a central viewing point but there was so much T&A on campus that it really didn't provide any extra joy other than to signify the end of classes and beginning of summer. In the real world, it is approximately 37.5 times better. After being stuck in an office all winter long with the same insufferable broads wearing the same baggy dress pants and turtle neck sweaters, skirt day takes your mind places you forgot it could even go.
Since joining the adult work force, I have managed to get the two tournament days and July 3rd off every single year without fail. I'm getting a to a point in my life where I may need to start doing the same for Skirt Day. 2 hour lunches in Post Office Square just aren't cutting it anymore.

Let me first of all say I despise the Dolphins, I hate them so much more than the Patriots. But, you have to feel a little compassion for DE Jason Taylor, he has been Kevin Garnett loyal to shitty Dolphin's teams and finally they might trade him for some draft picks. This is his only way out of a bad situation, and if Jared Allen can be traded for 3 draft picks, Taylor is definitely better.
As for Miami, they need to trade him, this team is so shitty and they need as many draft picks as possible.
D.J. Augustin Going Pro
D.J. Augustin is another Longhorn that has left early. Like T.J. Ford, Lamarcus Aldrich, Daniel Gibson and Kevin Durant, Augustin is done in Texas. I imagine D.J. Augustin will be the second point guard selected in the draft after Derrick Rose. D.J. averaged 19 points and 6 assists.
Also teammate A.J. Abrams declared as well.
Stanley Cup: 2nd Round Preview
#1 Montreal Canadiens vs. #6 Philadelphia Flyers
I’ll be rooting for terrorism to strike in this series because both of these teams deserve to go straight to hell. The Canadiens are flopping pussies, the Flyers are cheap shot artists who learned how to play hockey in prison showers (in other words, they wait for your back to be turned and for you to bend over). It should be a great match-up. One team loves to take it, the other loves to give it. Montreal wins it, though, in 5 games.
#2 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. #5 New York Rangers
The 7th series in this year’s playoffs to be between divisional opponents. Pittsburgh has the young stars, New York has the overpaid veterans and a great goalie. This might prove to be the best series of the playoffs. New York wins in 7 games
WESTERN CONFERENCE:
#1 Detroit Red Wings vs. #6 Colorado Avalanche
The intense rivalry between Colorado and Detroit from the late 1990's might be gone, but there's nothing like a conference semifinal series to rekindle an old flame. If Jose Theodore stays hot, Colorado has a chance to turn this into an exciting series. If not, Detroit will roll over them. Red Wings in 5.
#2 San Jose Sharks vs. #5 Dallas Stars
These two hockey mad cities go at in a classic, old school Pacific Division donnybrook. Well, if Fox had the NHL, that's how they'd promote this series. Two solid, complete teams square off. Dallas scored at will against Anaheim, and Marty Turco was good between the pipes. San Jose struggled a bit with Calgary, but guys like Evgeni Nabokov and Joe Thornton were built for the Stanley Cup playoffs. San Jose in 6 games.

96 Celtics, 77 Hawks
Oh yea, the Celtics destroyed the Hawks tonight.
Rajon again filled the stat. sheet with 12 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. As for his counterpart Mike Bibby, he had 12 points on 2-7 shooting, 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Those numbers certainly don't back up his mouth. KG, Pierce, Allen, Rondo, and Sam all had double digit points, but everyone on the C's played really well.
The Hawks are down 0-2, heading home for Saturdays game, but I don't think they'll win a single game.
Get your brooms out.
