Shane Mosely continuted the trend started by his pal Bernard Hopkins and shocked the world upsetting Antonio Margarito at the Staples Center last night. Mosely entered the ring at the ripe old age of 37, fresh off a divorce from his wife and a break with his father/long time trainer. Margarito is a full seven years his junior and outside of Manny Pacquio, perhaps had the best 2008 of any fighter.
All of this mattered not as Mosely dominated Antonio from the opening bell until the fight was stopped in the 9th round. The 8th round was particularly devastating to Margarito, he hit the floor after a series of uncontested combos.
A few other notes - this was the largest event ever held at the Staples Center. Some 20,800 people took in the fight live surpassing any crowd the Lakers ever pulled in. A lot of people like to say that boxing is dead and the MMA is where it is at - last night should tell you otherwise.
Kudos to HBO for offering the fight on its regular station instead of going the PPV route. I guess the current recession is good for something.
Finally, I hate to credit the frauds over at Barstool Sports with anything - especially that cockwallet el Pres - but this was a well written write up of the fight.
