Clay Buchholz is the Red Sox #3 pitcher. It is a fact at this point with the Wake in and out of the rotation. Tonight we will see if he can keep up the consistency that comes along with being a #3 starter.
Clay is 3-0 in his last 4 starts, winning his last 2 and beating the rays on Thursday, retiring the final 9 batters he faced in 6 innings of a 6-3 victory. The Sox are great at scoring runs at Fenway, so he should have plenty of run support.
Boston will be facing the Orioles young prospect David Hernandez. Since lowering his ERA to 3.20 by allowing 1 run in 7 innings of a 6-2 win at Fenway on July 26, Hernandez is 1-4 with a 6.29 ERA in 7 starts. He walked 6 and allowed 5 runs in 5 innings of Baltimore's 9-6 loss to the Yankees last Tuesday. In short, the Sox should bury this guy.
The Sox are currently 2 1/2 games ahead of Texas for the Wild Card spot. They are going to need to take advantage of series like this one against the Orioles if they want to put some distance between them and the Rangers.
