“The Chicago Cubs called up right-hander Jeff Samardzija from Triple-A Iowa on Friday after placing closer Kerry Wood on the disabled list with a blister on his right index finger.” (ESPN)
Former Notre Dame receiver Jeff “the shark” Samardzija is being brought up from AAA Iowa to fill the open roster spot made available when the cubbies placed Kerry Wood on the DL. Samardzija has been effective at the Triple-A level as a starter, but will be in the bullpen for the time being.
I am pumped the Cubs made this move. I love Notre Dame, and love everything about this guy. He could have been a first round pick in the 2006 NFL draft, instead decides to sign a baseball contract with the Cubs.
