Tony Stewart Leaving Joe Gibbs Racing
To most sports fans, particularly in New England, Joe Gibbs is best known as the Super Bowl winning coach of the Redskins. But a more recent success has been his NASCAR team. A team which Tony Stewart has decided to leave, in order to form his own.
Since 2000, Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has won 3 NASCAR Sprint Cup titles, and 48 individual races. Current Cup points leader Kyle Busch drives for JGR. Busch is widely recognized as the top driver in the series, ousting Tony Stewart from the top spot in what used to be HIS team. Furthermore, fellow JGR driver Denny Hamlin is ahead of Stewart in the points race. JGR also has a young driver in the Nationwide Series (equivalent of AAA) named Joey Lagono who is tearing shit up. In other words, Stewart is getting older, JGR has gotten younger.
So what does Tony Stewart do? He decides to leave for Haas CNC Racing, a team which has never won a race, and in 250 starts has only finished in the top 5 once. Stewart gets 50% of the team, and gets to be in charge of the day-to-day operations of the team. You see, Gene Haas is in jail for tax evasion.
I used to like Tony Stewart because he was an aggressive driver. But this is just sad. He could have been like Jeff Gordon and bought a piece of his own team. Instead, he wants to be a big shot with a crappy team that doesn't even make their own engines and has no chance of winning a title. He's become the Asante Samuel of NASCAR.
