Top 25 Under 25: #5 Evgeni Malkin

Born: July 31, 1986

Cracking the top 5 on our list, Penguins center, Evgeni “Geno” Malkin. Malkin was taken with the second overall pick in the 2004 draft. Malkin has made a name for himself despite playing alongside superstar, Sidney Crosby. Geno is much more than a sidekick, after a sensational 2007 season, he was awarded the Calder Memorial trophy for the league’s top rookie. Since then, he has gone on to lead the penguins in points each of the last two seasons. Last season, Malkin’s 113 points led the NHL.

When you combine the scoring numbers, rookie of the year award, two all-star appearances, and a Stanley cup before the age of 24, you get a sensational hockey player who’s potential is limitless. It certainly helps that his team mate and friend, Sid the kid, is there to pick up the slack if needed, but Malkin is no longer an afterthought.

In addition to a fantastic regular season, Geno was awarded the Conn Smythe trophy, for the most valuable player in the postseason. Malkin finished the postseason with 36 points in 24 games.
