As you may have read earlier, I've been away for the past few days, so I was unable to do the Stanley Cup Round-Ups. So here's a refresher on where the Western Conference playoff series stand.
VANCOUVER AND LOS ANGELES TIED 2-2
Vancouver scored 4 times in the 3rd period last night to knot this series up. A pair of mediocre goalies have helped turn this series into an offensive-minded one, with 28 total goals in 4 games. The Sedin twins haven't made too much noise, combining for only 3 goals. LA defenseman Jack Johnson has 6 assists.
NASHVILLE LEADS CHICAGO 2-1
Why does Nashville have a team? Why are they beating Chicago? Why is it that it seems like these teams are playing once a week? The answer to one of those questions is "goaltending." Pekka Rinne has been sesnational for the Predators, currently sporting the lowest GAA in the playoffs (1.35), as well as the highest SV% (.953). Chicago's Antti Niemi has been shaky at times. Chicago, sort of like Washington, is a great team, but their kryptonite is goaltending.
COLORADO AND SAN JOSE TIED 2-2
San Jose is trying to choke. But Colorado isn't good enough to finish the job. Their goalie is though. Craig Anderson has stopped .948 of the shots he's faced. Unfortunately, San Jose is shooting quite a bit. 43.5 times per game as a matter of fact. You can only lean on a goalie so much. The Sharks are shooting the most in the playoffs, the Avalanche are shooting the second fewest (25.8). Think about that. San Jose is getting 18 more pucks on net per game than Colorado is. Yet this series is tied?
DETROIT AND PHOENIX TIED 2-2
Phoenix's best player - Bryzgalov - has been a bit disappointing. And that's given Detroit some help. Henrik Zetterberg has led the Red Wings' attack, scoring 5 goals. You'd think as the series continues, and the stakes rise, the experienced Red Wings would prevail. But their goalie hasn't been a prized pig either. Howard's let in some soft and untimely goals.
