Daily Red Sox Spring Training Update

Sox 1 Orioles 5

- Mike Lowell returned to the Red Sox lineup for the first time since hip surgery. He went 1-3 and said he felt good. He did not play the field but was able to get some time in as the DH.

- "Lowell said last week that running was the final part of his game to come around after the surgery. After the game he said he had no problem running or getting out of the batter's box. "That twist on the swing and twisting back out to start running, it felt fine," Lowell said. "I actually didn't even think about it, which I think is a good thing (Sportsline)."

- Clay Buchholz continued his dominance this spring training pitching 3 perfect innings striking out 2. He is yet to let up a run, and is looks like his old self.

- Papelbon and Bard both pitched a scoreless inning. Bard was popping the mitt at almost 100 MPH.

- Lowrie went 2-2 as he battles for a spot on the team, and Ellsbury had a hit putting his average just under .300 for spring training.

Other Notes:

- There are some alraming reports coming from the Dominican WBC team. They were knocked out, but there are rumors that Ortiz's shoulder is still bothering him and it hurts to throw. Francona dismissed these reports and said that if there was something wrong he would know about it. It worries me, since he already had trouble with his shoulder when he "slept on it wrong". Still, the good news is that he is a DH.

- Apparently Smoltz has been spending a lot of time with Buccholz, and has been giving his pointers. That can only be a good thing.

- Brad Penny took another step toward appearing in a game, throwing about 25 pitches of live batting practice. There was a scary moment as one of the hitter hit a combacker that almost took his head off. Other then that he is progressing as expected, but I still don't see him ready for week 1 of the regular season.
