"Going into the final game of the regular season last night between his Falmouth Commodores and the Hyannis Mets, Todd Cunningham was hitting .388, tantalizingly close to making him the first .400 hitter in the Cape Cod League since Mark Smith of Southern Cal batted .408 for Wareham in 1990. However, he went 0 for 4, finishing at .378. Though he needed a Hollywood ending to wind up at .400, Cunningham, who will be a junior at Jacksonville State in his hometown of Jacksonville, Ala., said he never thought his first season in the Cape League would have him that close to spinning out such baseball magic (Boston.com)."
I know a lot of people will read this story and think nothing of it, but this is insane. Most guys in this league are happy if they can bat .250. It is really a pitchers league, and most players are adjusting to having to use wood bats. So, you have to give this kid props. The Cape League is fucking awesome, and I was a big fan of the league when I used to live down there during the summer, but I never saw anyone come close to batting .400. Hell I don't think I saw anyone bat above .310...
