Wakefield Still Hurting
"Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield [stats] is considering a second cortisone shot to deal with a sciatic problem that has spread to his left calf and delayed his return to the rotation. Wakefield holds out hope he’ll be able to throw off a mound in St. Petersburg, Fla., this week as originally scheduled, but he’s feeling discouraged.
“I’m just depressed that this isn’t progressing the way I want it to progress,” Wakefield said yesterday, his 43rd birthday. “I’m throwing, playing catch. There are different symptoms now. I’ve got zero strength in my left calf due to the nerve. I’m just waiting for it to get better (Boston Herald).”
Every year this happens to Wakefield. His back is a mess and he just can't make it through a season. It is really too bad, since he was having such a good season. The Sox could really use him back with Smoltz, Buchholz, and Penny all sucking. Even though this seems to be a different injury from years past, his calf pain is caused by a nerve in his back. These thing usually do not just go away, so I am starting to fear we might not see the Wake back for a long time....
