Things got a bit crazy over the weekend, but from a big picture perspective, things actually got simple and organized. BCS teams 1-7 are all undefeated. And a few conferences can start printing Conference Champion t-shirts for a few teams.
Here are the 10 lessons we learned:
#1 Oregon is a National Title Contender
They need a lot of help. But they did play a close game in Boise against the #7 team in the country. It was overshadowed by post-game Keepin-It-Realism, but the Ducks weren't blown out of the water by the Broncos. They beat USC, and they'll win the Pac-10 so long as they beat Arizona on November 21st. They've already defeated #14 Utah, and #20 Cal. It's a shame they'll be punished for having the balls to go to Boise. There's a lesson there. Under the current system, it's a bad idea to try to bust the potential BCS buster.
#2 Georgia Tech Will Win the ACC
Virginia Tech lost to UNC last Thursday, which was huge for Georgia Tech. The #10 Yellow Jackets only need to beat Duke to win the ACC Coastal. Then they'll crush either Clemson or Boston College in the conference title game. This is an exciting team. It's option football, but it's fun to watch. And it's good to see someone besides Virginia Tech winning the ACC.
#3 Iowa SUCKS!
I'm tired of seeing Iowa win. I'm tired of seeing a team go unpunished for not playing the first 3 quarters. Iowa turned the ball over 6 times, and were down 24-14 going into the 4th quarter of their 42-24 win over Indiana. They have to go to Columbus in 2 weeks, but other then that they have home games against Northwestern and Minnesota. They're a great team, but it'd just be a shame if they got a National Title berth.
#4 Texas Will Win the Big XII
Alright, this might seem obvious. But this is almost a stone cold fact now. They can drop a game, and still win their division without any help. They could drop 2 games, and still probably win their division. Then there's their potential Big XII North opponents. The Big XII North has a combined record of 27-23. It's a logjam in the middle of that division, and nobody seems to want to win it.
#5 Boise State and TCU Will DP the BCS
Every week, the good ole boys in the BCS, along with their Big Ten and Pac-10 supporters, watch these two teams, and cheer viciously for an upset. Nothing doing. Boise State has a big-time win against Oregon, but they do have to play a 7-2 Idaho team that would probably love to crush their dreams. TCU still has to play #14 Utah, but that game's in Fort Worth. These two teams will run the table, but only one will get a BCS berth, unfortunately.
#6 Michigan Sucks Ass
1-4 in the Big Ten. They still have to play Wisconsin and Ohio State. How'd they get 5 wins? Western Michigan, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan, Indiana, and Delaware State. That's how. It's more than a little fun to watch the Wolverines fail so much, that people aren't even talking about them failing anymore. Except people who hate them.
#7 Oklahoma is a Top 25 Team
But no higher than 20th. Yes, they've 3 losses. But who else belongs in the Top 25? West Virginia? South Carolina? Clemson? Who would you pick if Oklahoma played these teams on a neutral field? I'd pick the Sooners. Their Bedlam game against Oklahoma State on November 28th will have a Cotton Bowl berth on the line, and should be fun to watch as both sides are pretty evenly matched.
#8 The BCS Has Inconsistent Logic
Last week, a 1 loss USC team was ranked 4th in both human polls, ahead of unbeaten teams like Cincinnati, Boise State, Iowa, and TCU. This week, a 1 loss Oregon team is ranked 8th by both human polls, behind those same undefeated teams. So why was USC, who had lost to a crappy team but beaten a quality team, given more votes than Oregon, who had lost to a great team, and beaten a quality team? It's inconsistent.
#9 Some Voters Should Be Euthanized
After losing to Boston College 35-10, 4 people voted for Central Michigan. 4 votes don't mean much, but if someone votes for a 7-2 MAC team to be ranked, doesn't that call into question their entire ballot? Who do these CMU guys vote to be #2 or #3? I-AA powerhouse Richmond got 1 vote. I'm not making it up. You can look it up.
#10 There Can Be a Perfect BCS Storm
If Texas goes unbeaten, and either Florida or Alabama also go unbeaten, it is still very possible that they'll be the only two unbeaten teams in I-A. Iowa has to play @ Ohio State. Cincinnati has to play #13 Pitt on the road. TCU has to play #14 Utah. Boise State has to play 7-2 Idaho. This could all come together and be perfect. But I doubt it.
