2010 MLB Preview: Baltimore Orioles
2009 Record: 64-98
Lineup:
1. 2B Brian Roberts
2. CF Adam Jones
3. RF Nick Markakis
4. 3B Miguel Tejada
5. C Matt Wieters
6. LF Nolan Reimold
7. DH Luke Scott
8. 1B Garrett Atkins
9. SS Cesar Izturis
If Wieters is what every scouting report says he is then this isn't a bad lineup. I don't like Tejada as the cleanup hitter, but if Wieters is for real he should eventually take that spot. Baltimore needs Atkins to have a bounce back year, and Markakis, although he wasn't bad last year, needs to become the player that everyone thinks he is. It isn't a great lineup, but the building blocks are there (Wieters, Jones, Markakis, Reimold).
Pitching:
1. RHP Kevin Millwood
2. RHP Jeremy Guthrie
3. LHP Brian Matusz
4. RHP Brad Bergesen
5. RHP Chris Tillman
Closer
LHP Mike Gonzalez:
Just like the hitting the building blocks are in place the questions is whether or not they are for real. Tillman is finally getting his shot, and they have been waiting for him and Matusz for a long time. I am not completely sold on them, but at least there is hope. Millwood is solid, and I think he can have a decent year now that he is out of Texas, but other then that there is really nothing special.
Overall:
Baltimore has had 12 consecutive losing seasons, and have come in last place in the AL East in each of the last 2 seasons. It won't be much different this year, but they could challenge Toronto for 4th place in the AL.
