Red Sox Clinch Playoffs With 5-4 Over Indians

The Boston Red Sox will be in the playoffs to defend their World Series championship. Boston clinched the Wild Card, since the Yankees are 6 1/2 games back with only 5 games remaining. The Sox still have a chance to catch the Rays, but honestly I don't think that matters. This team had to overcome so much to get here, and it is a great accomplishment. Now it is time to get healthy.

Who would have thought that Tim Wakefield would out pitch Cliff Lee to put the Sox in the playoffs. Even with Wakefield pitching very well Boston was in trouble in almost lost the game in the 8th. Cleveland loaded the bases with two outs, so the Sox decided to go to their stud closer. Papelbon came out and got Jamey Carroll to ground out to 2nd on the very first pitch. Papelbon was no less dominate in the 9th, as he struck out the first two guys before getting Victor Martinez to pop out to Alex Cora to end the game, and put the Red Sox back into the playoffs.

The Sox got their runs off the guys they have been relying on all year, as Youk had a 2 run HR, and Little Dusty reported for duty with a 2 run double. Pedroia was 2-4 on the night with 2 double, and 2 RBIs, and I think this may have given him the MVP. No matter what, at least we know the Sox will be in the playoffs, with 3 stud pitchers in Beckett, Dice-K, and Lester.
