J.C. Romero Suspended 50 Games

"Phillies reliever J.C. Romero will be suspended for the first 50 games of next season after testing positive for a banned supplement, ESPN.com reported Monday night. Romero, who earned two wins in Philadelphia's World Series victory over Tampa Bay last year, thought the supplement he took was legal because he bought it over the counter at a nutrition store in the United States, the report said (Sportsline)."

On the one hand, I feel bad for the guy if he really had no idea, and got clearance from the MLB to take this supplement, but on the other hand this is kind of fucked up, since all these suspensions are delayed. If this test was before arbitration in October, this likely means Romero tested positive before the World Series. In my eyes he shouldn't have been playing. It just seems to me like another way the MLB controls when people are suspended to keep it out of the media. The MLB would not want to be talking about steroids during the World Series, and thus they wait till the offseason to suspended the guy. If I was an owner of a team, I would have only the trainers of the team allowed to buy the players supplements, and these trainers would have to know the letter of the law for what is allowed and what is not.
