"Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek and owner John Henry met for approximately 90 minutes near the player's Atlanta-area home Friday night, but it remains unclear as to whether Varitek is any closer to returning to the team (Boston Herald)."
This story gets more interesting by the day. The Red Sox really fucked Varitek, when they offered him arbitration. I said it then, and I'll say it again, not taking that offer was the worst decision Varitek has ever made, because now any team that picks him up has to give the Red Sox draft picks (first rounders) on top of signing an aging, down on his luck catcher. Not good news, and there doesn't seem to be a market for him. The Sox are basically beating him into submission. They want to sign him to a 1 year, really low money offer (think 2-4 million), and I really think they are going to be able to pull it off. What other option does he have?
I don't want to see Varitek back, but if the pitchers want him back, and we can sign him to a 1 year deal for low money, then why not? Catchers in general can't hit. There are like only two catchers that make any real difference offensively, so fuck it. That's my thought anyways....
