Daily Red Sox Spring Training Update
Sox 1 Yanks 7
The score was ugly, but there were a lot of good things to come out of this game...
- The Wake had a great outing going 5 2/3 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits with 5 K's.
- The even better news is that George Kottaras looked very comfortable catching the knuckleball. Everyone is so worried about the Sox and their backup catcher, but people forget the Sox won a title with Mirabelli hitting under .210. Everyone should give this kid a shot before jumping all over him.
- On the bad side of things, Delcarmen got lit up. He lasted only 1/3 of an innings surrendering 3 runs on 2 hits.
- The Sox had a hard time getting hits last night (5). A.J. Burnett looked very good.
Other Notes:
- Drew will return to the lineup today against the Cincinnati Reds. This will be the first time Drew has played since being hit by a pitch. Drew also said that the injection he got for his back is working he he feels great.
- Daisuke Matsuzaka will return to the Red Sox this evening after his stellar performance in the World Baseball Classic. The Sox hope to have him pitch an inning in a minor league game Friday, which would be on his normal rest. That would be a tuneup before he pitches against the Braves.
- Smoltz will be pitching a bullpen session today at 9am. He'll throw 30-35 pitches, and the Sox have been so impressed with his recovery efforts that they now hope he'll be in the rotation by mid May (before it was mid June).
- Brad Penny experienced no issues the day after his first start of the spring.
- Kevin Youkilis, who played Monday for the first time since injuring his left foot at the WBC, reported no problems.
Sox play the Reds at 1:05pm on NESN.
